There is no Lakitu-off setting documented in the Nintendo sources reviewed. In standard play, Lakitu’s retrieval is part of the game’s normal behavior. A creator has demonstrated a community-made no-Lakitu mode, but the available information does not establish whether it works with current updates, what hardware it requires, or whether it affects online play.
Can you turn Lakitu off in the game’s settings?
Nintendo’s official Mario Kart 8 Deluxe update notes describe Lakitu carrying a kart after an incident; the official game page does not document an option to disable him. Based on those sources, there is no documented ordinary setting for removing Lakitu. This does not establish what every mode or version might allow.
Steering and control options, such as gyro controls or steering assist, are not documented as ways to change Lakitu’s rescue behavior.
Why does Lakitu pick up your kart?
Lakitu retrieves a kart after it goes off course or becomes stranded. Nintendo’s update notes also refer to a historical issue in which a kart could be carried by Lakitu after hitting a wall even though it had not left the course. That note concerns a specific past issue; it is not evidence that the same bug persists in current versions.

What about a no-Lakitu mod?
A creator has demonstrated a community-made mode that removes Lakitu. That is a modded experience, not a Nintendo-supported setting. The demonstration’s description credits community mod creators, but the information available does not confirm current game-version compatibility, installation requirements, or online-play consequences.
Because those details are unresolved, there is no reliable set of installation steps to give here. Before attempting a modification, find current documentation from its maintainers that matches your game version and hardware, and check the implications for online play. Do not assume a video demonstration means a mod is safe, supported, or usable with your setup.
