Nintendo’s original Switch 2 has an internal battery that owners are not meant to remove. Nintendo says replacement is available through Customer Support for a fee. Nintendo UK also documents a revised Switch 2 with a user-replaceable battery; that revision is scheduled to begin appearing in selected European markets from October 2026, with availability varying by country.
Before opening the console or ordering a part, identify the revision and check the Nintendo support information for your country. A procedure or battery intended for one revision should not be assumed to fit the other.

Switch 2 battery replacement at a glance

Nintendo says the revised battery has approximately 1% less capacity than the original. That difference does not by itself indicate worse real-world endurance: battery life varies with the game, display settings, wireless use and other conditions.
How to tell which Switch 2 you have
Do not decide from appearance alone. Nintendo’s specifications pages distinguish the two versions, and the revised console is not automatically present in every country or on every retail shipment.

Check Nintendo’s specifications for your market
Start with the Nintendo website for the country where the console was purchased. Look for the Switch 2 specifications and battery-replacement wording. The original specification identifies the battery as not user-replaceable; the revised European specification identifies a user-replaceable battery.
Check the console, packaging and documentation
Record the model information printed on the console, box or purchase documentation, then compare it with Nintendo’s current regional specifications. If the wording does not clearly identify the revision, contact Nintendo Support before buying a battery or removing any screws. Capacity alone is not a safe substitute for model identification, because the two documented capacities are close and a replacement part may have more than one revision-specific connector or mounting arrangement.
Confirm regional availability
Nintendo UK’s revision announcement concerns selected European products. It lists October 2026 as the expected earliest availability for the revised Switch 2, subject to change. A console sold elsewhere may follow a different schedule, and not every European country must receive the revision at the same time.
What to do with the original, non-user-replaceable model
For the original Switch 2, Nintendo’s official position is unambiguous: “Please note that the internal battery cannot be removed. If the battery needs to be replaced, it can be replaced for a fee via Nintendo Customer Support.”

Use the regional Nintendo repair process
- Open the Nintendo Customer Support site for the country where the console is being serviced.
- Choose the Switch 2 repair or service option and check whether your console is eligible.
- Describe the symptom accurately: reduced runtime, failure to charge, shutdowns, physical damage or a suspected swollen battery.
- Review the quoted fee, shipping instructions, turnaround estimate, warranty treatment and any data or accessory requirements before sending the console.
- Back up or transfer anything you can, remove game cards and accessories unless Nintendo specifically requests them, and package the console according to the service instructions.
There is no single worldwide replacement price established for this console. Nintendo’s fee, eligibility rules and repair logistics can differ by country, warranty status and the condition of the unit. A regional quote is more reliable than a price reported for another market.
Why official service is the default recommendation
The battery is installed inside the console, and access requires removing the rear housing and internal shielding. Nintendo’s support route preserves a clear chain of responsibility for the repair and lets the service centre assess related charging, connector or board damage at the same time.
What changes on the revised user-replaceable model
“User-replaceable” does not mean that every battery sold for a Switch 2 is interchangeable. It means Nintendo has designed that specific revision so the battery can be replaced according to its model instructions.

Nintendo’s general battery guidance says to first review battery-life improvement advice, then check whether the particular product and model has a user-replaceable battery and follow the instructions for that model. Use the guide that matches the revision printed on your console and its regional documentation.

Replacement kits are a separate question
Nintendo UK says replacement kits for the revised console are planned for the Nintendo Store in the future. The information available here does not establish a current listing, price or stock position. Do not treat a future-kit announcement as proof that a compatible kit is available today.
Do not assume cross-revision compatibility
The original and revised consoles have different published battery capacities and different replacement classifications. Neither Nintendo’s specifications nor the independent repair documentation establishes that a battery, connector, adhesive arrangement or shield from one revision works in the other. Verify compatibility by the complete model designation, not by the word “Switch 2” alone.
Can you do the original model yourself?
An independent iFixit guide documents a technically possible Switch 2 battery replacement. Its visible procedure includes removing stickers and many screws, opening the back cover, disconnecting antenna and microSD-related connections, and removing a shield plate before reaching the battery area.

Nintendo’s safety guidance says: “Do not disassemble, attempt to repair, or deform the battery.” Attempting the work can puncture or short a lithium-ion cell, damage the motherboard or antenna cables, compromise sealing, and affect warranty or later service eligibility.

If you are an experienced electronics technician
Anyone who elects to use an independent guide should first verify the exact revision, obtain a battery explicitly identified for that revision, use insulated precision tools and work on a nonconductive surface. Disconnect power before handling the cell, keep metal tools away from the battery contacts, and stop immediately if the pack is hot, torn, leaking, swollen or stuck to the frame.
These precautions do not turn the original console into a consumer-replaceable product. For most owners, Nintendo service or a repair provider that can demonstrate appropriate lithium-ion experience is the lower-risk option.

A swollen battery is a safety problem, not merely a runtime problem. Stop charging and using the console, do not press the case flat, and do not pierce, bend or pry the pack. Nintendo advises against disassembling or deforming the battery.
- Power the console down if it can be shut down without handling the damaged area.
- Move it away from heat, water, flammable materials and direct sunlight.
- Do not place it in household rubbish, a normal parcel or a battery collection box unless the operator specifically accepts damaged lithium-ion devices.
- Contact Nintendo Support or a qualified service centre and describe the swelling or other damage before transport.
Nintendo Japan advises service-centre replacement for a swollen battery. For a product with an inaccessible internal battery, its disposal guidance says not to disassemble the device and to follow local municipal disposal instructions. Local rules control the final disposal route, so ask the municipality or waste operator if Nintendo service is unavailable.

Does short battery life mean the battery must be replaced?
Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of battery life for the original Switch 2, depending on the games and usage conditions. That range is a product estimate, not a diagnostic threshold. A demanding 3D game, high screen brightness, wireless communication, downloads or a warm environment can reduce runtime without indicating a failed cell.
Try software and usage checks first
- Install the latest system software and game updates.
- Lower screen brightness and disable wireless features you are not using.
- Check whether one game or application causes the unusually rapid drain.
- Test charging with the Nintendo-specified power equipment and inspect the USB-C connection for debris or physical damage.
- Compare performance over several full charge and discharge cycles rather than judging from one session.
If the console shuts down unexpectedly, refuses to charge, becomes unusually hot, loses charge while powered off or shows physical expansion, stop troubleshooting and request service. No reliable universal battery lifespan or replacement interval has been established for Switch 2, so age alone is not a reason to open the console.
Costs, warranty and turnaround
For the original model, Nintendo’s documented route is a paid Customer Support replacement. The amount, shipping arrangement and turnaround depend on the service region and the console’s condition. A repair quote may also change if inspection finds liquid damage, impact damage or a fault beyond the battery.

- Whether the console is still covered by the applicable warranty.
- Whether a battery replacement is covered or charged separately.
- Whether Nintendo returns the same console or a replacement unit.
- Whether saved data, microSD cards and accessories must be removed.
- Whether the quoted price includes return shipping and taxes.
Do not rely on a fee quoted for Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States or another market as though it applied worldwide.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Switch 2 is the same: the original and revised consoles have different battery classifications.
- Ordering by capacity only: a similar mAh figure does not prove connector, firmware or physical compatibility.
- Treating an independent guide as Nintendo approval: a documented teardown is not an official recommendation.
- Ignoring a swollen pack: swelling requires safe service handling, not a routine DIY swap.
- Using runtime as the only test: Nintendo’s estimate varies by game and conditions and is not a replacement threshold.
- Assuming a future kit is already for sale: Nintendo UK has announced planned kits, but a current listing and price are not established.
Bottom line for Switch 2 owners
If your console is the original Switch 2, do not remove the internal battery yourself; contact Nintendo Customer Support for a regional replacement quote. If it is the revised model identified by Nintendo as user-replaceable, follow that model’s instructions and verify the battery and kit against the complete model designation. In either case, swelling, heat or physical damage calls for immediate service rather than continued use.
