Short answer: a digital PlayStation game is a personal, non-transferable license attached to the purchasing PSN account, not an owned copy that can normally be sold, gifted, rented, or lent to another account. Sony does provide limited access sharing: on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, other users of that console can play the purchasing account’s downloaded games, even offline. Physical discs remain the practical way to hand a game to someone else or trade it, although the legal position for disc-based software depends on Sony’s regional terms and the law where you live.
The ownership distinction that decides everything
When you buy a game from the PlayStation Store, you pay for permission to use software under Sony Interactive Entertainment’s terms. Sony’s United States Software EULA states: The Software is licensed to you, not sold.
The license is described as limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, personal, and for private, non-commercial use.

That wording is why a digital purchase normally stays with the account that bought it. The download on your console is not a separately transferable object. Another PSN account cannot be assigned the license through a normal PlayStation Store feature, and changing the email address or giving someone your sign-in details does not turn the transaction into a gift.
The exact contract depends on your country. The US EULA and the UK Software Usage Terms are not interchangeable legal advice. Sony’s UK terms expressly prohibit reselling either disc-based or digital games unless Sony authorizes it and, where another company published the game, that publisher also authorizes it. Those terms also say a license is not transferable unless applicable local law requires otherwise. Local consumer, contract, and copyright rules can therefore add rights or limitations that are different from Sony’s US wording.

- Out-of-This-World Adventure – Stranded on a lunar space station, Hugh encounters Diana, a mysterious android resembling a young girl. While searching for a way back to Earth, they fight to survive against Bots directed to “neutralize” intruders.
- Hack & Shoot – Use each character’s distinct abilities to take down enemies. In combat, Diana can hack foes to expose weaknesses so Hugh can blast them with weapons. This unique fusion of gameplay offers an action-packed experience like no other.
- Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
- Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!
Can you resell a digital PS5 or PS4 game?
There is no ordinary digital-resale function. You cannot list a PlayStation Store purchase for another person, move its license to the buyer’s account, or receive a standard account-to-account transfer of the game. Sony’s terms also prohibit renting, leasing, sublicensing, or making the software available on a network without SIE’s prior written consent.
A sale of the entire PSN account is not a safe substitute. The license is personal and non-transferable, and handing over credentials can expose both people to account recovery disputes, security checks, payment information, and possible enforcement under the account terms. It also does not create the clean ownership record a buyer expects: the original purchaser remains the account holder in Sony’s systems.
Some websites or private sellers may advertise “digital codes” or accounts. A code that has never been redeemed is a different product from a game already attached to your account; the code’s region, expiry conditions, and seller authorization matter. Once a game is redeemed, it is normally tied to the redeeming account and cannot be detached for resale.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan you gift a digital PlayStation game?
Not after you have bought it on your account. PlayStation does not provide a general “transfer this purchase” command. If you want another person to receive a digital game, the legitimate route is for that person to buy it on their own account, or for you to give an authorized, unused purchase code when one is available for that title and region. Buying the game yourself and then asking Sony to move the license is not a normal gifting process.
Do not confuse console sharing with gifting. Console sharing lets other profiles use a purchase on one designated PS5; it does not place the game in those profiles’ libraries. If you disable sharing, replace the console, lose access to the purchasing account, or the service cannot validate the license, those other profiles do not retain an independent entitlement.

Can you lend a digital game to a friend?
There is no digital lending mechanism comparable to handing over a disc. You cannot check out a license for a week, pause your access, and then return it through PlayStation settings. Giving a friend your PSN credentials is not lending; it is sharing an account covered by a personal, non-transferable license and creates security and policy risks.
Sony’s supported alternative is household-style access on a single PS5. A friend using a different console is not covered by the console-sharing permission: Sony’s PlayStation Plus support guidance specifically says sharing with a friend on another console is not allowed. The feature is therefore useful for people who use the same PS5, not a remote library-borrowing system.
How PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play works
On one PS5, the account that bought and downloaded a game can enable Console Sharing and Offline Play. Once enabled, anyone using that PS5 can launch the purchasing account’s downloaded games and media, including when the console is offline. Sony limits the setting to one PS5 at a time.
Enable sharing on the PS5
- Sign in on the PS5 with the account that purchased the games.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Users and Accounts, then Other.
- Select Console Sharing and Offline Play and choose Enable.
- Download the games while signed in to the purchasing account, then let the other local profiles use their own accounts on that PS5.
The setting grants access on that physical console; it does not copy ownership to another PSN account. If the purchasing account enables Console Sharing and Offline Play on a different PS5, the previous PS5 loses that shared-console status. Sony also provides account-management controls for remotely deactivating consoles, but that does not convert a license into a transferable one.
What the other users can and cannot do
- They can: play eligible downloaded purchases on the enabled PS5, with their own local profiles, and use the games while that PS5 is offline.
- They cannot: claim the games in their own libraries, move them to another console, resell them, or receive a permanent license if the purchaser removes sharing or loses the account.
- They should: use separate PSN profiles rather than the purchaser’s sign-in, so saves, trophies, parental controls, and personal information remain separated.
What PlayStation Plus sharing adds—and what it does not
Sony permits selected PlayStation Plus benefits to be shared on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, and on one PS4 designated as the primary PS4. This is an access allowance, not a transfer of the subscription or the games claimed by the subscribing account.

Because the exact benefit set can change by plan and service policy, check the current Plus support description for your country before relying on a particular feature. A second user should not assume that cloud saves, monthly-game redemption, or every promotional trial will follow the shared console.

Physical discs: why lending and used sales are different
A disc purchase gives you possession of a physical medium. You can hand that disc to another person, and a compatible console can use it as the play check. That practical handoff is why discs support family lending, borrowing, and used-market trading in a way a digital license generally does not.
Physical does not mean that every legal question disappears. Sony’s UK Software Usage Terms say: You must not resell either disc-based games or digital games, unless expressly authorised by us and, if the publisher is another company, additionally by the publisher.
The same terms preserve applicable local law and address transferability. In some jurisdictions, consumer or copyright rules may limit how far a contract can restrict a lawful resale; in others, the contract may be more decisive. Treat the disc as a transferable object in practical terms, but check the law and terms that apply where the transaction occurs.
A recipient also needs the right hardware, the disc itself, and any required patches. The disc may install the base game while online multiplayer, servers, downloadable expansions, or publisher accounts remain subject to separate requirements. Lending the disc does not promise that every online feature will still operate years later.
Digital versus physical: the trade-offs
| Question | Digital PlayStation purchase | Physical PlayStation disc |
|---|---|---|
| Legal relationship in Sony’s terms | Personal, non-transferable software license tied to the purchasing account. | Disc-based software is also covered by software terms; UK terms prohibit resale unless authorized, subject to local law. |
| Lending | No built-in license-lending mechanism. Console Sharing and Offline Play provides limited access on one PS5. | Handing over the disc is practical, provided the recipient has compatible hardware and any required updates. |
| Resale | No ordinary account-transfer or PlayStation Store resale function. | Used-game transactions are physically possible, while contractual and local-law rules vary by region. |
| Hardware | Runs on compatible consoles signed in to the purchasing account, subject to license validation and service availability. | Requires a compatible disc drive; the disc must normally be inserted to play. |
| Access risk | Depends on the account, license checks, and continued service availability. | Possession preserves the physical medium, but online features and publisher services can still change. |
| Convenience | Immediate download and no disc swapping. | Can be lent, stored, or traded physically, but requires inserting the disc. |

If lending, buying used games, or retaining a physical fallback matters to you, look for the product description PlayStation 5 console with disc drive and verify the exact model before buying. A detachable drive accessory, where offered for a particular model and region, should be checked against Sony’s current compatibility information; do not assume every digital-edition listing accepts one.
What happens when a digital purchase becomes unavailable?
Digital access is tied to the account and the platform’s ability to validate that entitlement. Account suspension, loss of account access, payment or region issues, a failed license restoration, or the retirement of an online service can prevent a download or launch. Sony’s terms reserve the ability to end or modify online services, so a digital purchase should not be described as a guarantee of perpetual access.
Physical media reduces one dependency—you retain the disc—but it does not freeze the rest of the game ecosystem. A title may require a patch, an account, an online server, or downloadable content that is no longer available. Keep the disc, proof of purchase, and account credentials secure, and back up saves through the options available to your console and subscription tier.

On July 1, 2026, Sony Senior Director of Content Communications Sid Shuman announced that physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.
Sony also said the change does not affect games already released, or games releasing before January 2028, when those titles are offered in disc format.
This is a forward-looking production policy, not a declaration that existing discs stop working in January 2028. Games already in circulation can still be lent or traded as physical objects, subject to the applicable terms and law. The announcement does mean that the supply of new first-party or licensed disc releases after that start date may change, so buyers who value a physical collection should check each title’s release format rather than assume a disc edition will exist.

Choosing the right format for your situation
Choose digital when immediate access matters most
- You primarily play on your own account and do not expect to sell or lend the game.
- You want a download without changing discs.
- The household uses one PS5 and can rely on Console Sharing and Offline Play for local profiles.
- You accept account and service dependence in exchange for convenience.
Choose a disc edition when transferability matters
- You regularly lend games to family members or friends in the same area.
- You buy used games or expect to resell a title later.
- You want a physical backup when a store listing or account access is unavailable.
- You are willing to use a PS5 model with a compatible disc drive and keep the disc available for every play session.
Use console sharing only for its intended scope
Enable it on the one PS5 whose other users need access. Keep each person on a separate profile, and do not advertise the arrangement as a gift, resale, or remote lending service. For a friend on another console, purchase the game on that friend’s account instead of relying on shared credentials.
Practical answers to common scenarios
“I bought the wrong digital game. Can I sell it?”
Not through a normal PlayStation feature. Check Sony’s current refund rules promptly if the transaction may qualify; a refund is different from transferring the license to another buyer.
“Can my child play my digital game?”
Yes, on the PS5 where your account has enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play, using the child’s own local account and any applicable family restrictions. The child does not own or receive the game license independently.

Sony’s supported console-sharing arrangement is limited to one enabled PS5, and its Plus guidance says sharing with a friend on another console is not allowed. Do not provide your credentials as a workaround.
“Can I lend a PS4 disc to someone with a PS5?”
Only if that PS5 has a disc drive and the game is among the compatible PS4 titles. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read the PS4 disc, so the recipient would need a digital entitlement or a disc-drive console.
“Will physical games disappear in 2028?”
No immediate shutdown of existing discs was announced. Sony’s July 1, 2026 statement concerns production for new games beginning in January 2028 and says titles already released or releasing before then in disc format are unaffected.
