A game bought from a digital storefront is normally a personal, account-bound license rather than a resalable copy. The major storefront rules cited here prohibit or do not support moving that license to another account, selling the account that holds it, or reselling the redeemed download. A physical disc or cartridge is different: it can generally be handed to another person, but one-time activation codes, downloadable content, virtual items and online entitlements may stay with the original account.
The outcome can change with the country, the platform agreement accepted at checkout, the publisher’s end-user license, the game’s need for online servers and any applicable consumer law. Treat the platform’s current regional terms as the starting point, not a general assumption that buying a download gives you property you can sell.

What you actually buy when you download a game
A digital purchase usually gives you permission to use software under specified conditions. The storefront account records that permission, and the platform can check the account before allowing a download, installation, update or online service. You may possess files on a drive, but possession of those files is not the same as owning a transferable copy.

“Ownership” therefore has two layers. Copyright law governs rights in the software, while the contract you accept with the platform and publisher governs the license granted to your account. Those contracts commonly reserve the right to restrict transfer, resale, commercial use and copying.

What the major platform rules say
PlayStation
PlayStation’s terms describe a Store purchase as “a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” They add that the license “is not transferable unless your local applicable laws say it must be.” The same terms state that users may not reproduce or transfer content or use it for resale. In practice, a redeemed game remains attached to the purchasing account; selling the account or trying to separate one title from it conflicts with those terms.
Nintendo
Nintendo Support gives a direct answer: “It’s not possible to transfer digital purchases from one Nintendo Account to another.” Downloaded content can be used by other users on the console associated with the purchasing account, but that console access does not move the purchase record. If the original account is removed or the console relationship changes, access can change with it.
Microsoft and Xbox
Microsoft’s Digital Goods rules say: “Except as may be permitted below, you may not transfer or resell any licenses to any Digital Goods.” They also explain that selling a device containing digital goods does not grant the buyer rights to use those goods. Handing over a console with downloads installed is therefore not a lawful substitute for transferring the licenses.
Steam
Steam Support states: “Steam account ownership cannot be transferred. Buying, selling, trading, or gifting a Steam account is a violation of the Steam Subscriber Agreement.” A library is recorded against the account, so there is no supported transaction that removes one redeemed game and gives it to another Steam account. Attempts to sell a whole account can also expose the seller and buyer to account recovery disputes, payment reversals or sanctions.

How DRM prevents a digital resale
Digital rights management (DRM) combines contractual restrictions with technical checks. A launcher or console can verify that the signed-in account owns a license, that the device is authorized, that a subscription is active or that the game is being run in an allowed region. Some titles perform these checks at launch; others require periodic online validation, a publisher account or a server connection for multiplayer and progression.
Copying an installed folder to another person does not copy the license. The recipient may have the executable files but still receive an ownership or activation error. Circumventing an activation check can violate anti-circumvention law and the platform agreement, in addition to risking malware or a compromised account. WIPO’s analysis describes this combination of end-user license agreements, terms of service and technical protection measures as the standard way publishers limit used digital-game markets.
DRM also affects a legitimate buyer’s future access. If a platform account is locked, a license is region-restricted, a subscription expires or an authentication server is retired, the files alone may not restore play. Check whether the game supports offline mode and what must be done before disconnecting from the service.

Can you move a game between your own accounts?
Expect the answer to be no. Platforms generally do not provide a title-by-title migration tool, even when both accounts belong to the same person. Family groups, console sharing and primary-device settings are access mechanisms, not ownership transfers.

Use permitted console sharing instead of a transfer
- Keep the purchasing account on the console or device designated by the platform for sharing.
- Enable the platform’s official primary-console, home-console or family-sharing setting, using the current menu labels for your region.
- Have the other user sign in with their own account and start the downloaded game from that shared device.
- Do not delete the purchasing account, revoke its device authorization or assume the other user can download the title on an unrelated device.
Sharing can be limited by the number of authorized devices, simultaneous use, region and the platform’s current rules. It gives another user a permitted way to play; it does not give them a saleable license, ownership history or the right to move the game to a different account.
What happens when an account is closed?
Closing or losing the account can remove access to its library. Customer support may restore an account after identity and purchase verification, but support generally cannot split a library across accounts. Preserve receipts and recovery details rather than attempting an informal account handoff.
Can you sell a physical disc or cartridge?
A tangible copy is the clearer resale object. One publisher EULA, for example, permits permanent transfer of “the entire physical copy of pre-recorded Software” when the seller keeps no copies. That permission does not automatically cover every item associated with the box.

- One-time serial or activation code: If the code has already been redeemed, it normally stays with the original account and cannot be promised to the buyer.
- Downloadable content and season passes: These are commonly redeemed accounts rather than transferable objects.
- Virtual currency and cosmetic items: They are usually account-bound and are not transferred with the disc or cartridge.
- Online passes and server access: The game may require a separate account, subscription or a service that could later be discontinued.
- Completeness: Include the original disc or cartridge and disclose missing manuals, inserts or codes so the buyer knows exactly what is being sold.
If the buyer needs an activation code to install or play, describe whether it is unused, already redeemed or not included. Do not advertise an account-bound entitlement as part of the physical sale.

Giving a game to someone else
An official gifting flow, where a platform offers one, creates a new license for the recipient. A platform gift card serves the same basic purpose: the recipient spends the balance and obtains a license on their own account. Neither method resells a game that you already redeemed.
Sending login credentials is not gifting. It transfers control of an account that may contain payment details, personal data and an entire library, and it conflicts with the account rules described above. If you want another person to play a title you own, use the platform’s documented sharing feature and leave the purchase on your account.

Use the storefront’s current refund process rather than trying to sell the license. Eligibility can depend on purchase date, play time, pre-order status, region and whether downloadable content was consumed. A refund, when approved, reverses the original transaction; it does not create a transferable copy for someone else.
- Open the platform’s account purchase history and locate the transaction.
- Read the regional refund conditions, including time limits and usage thresholds.
- Submit the request through the official support form while the transaction is eligible.
- After a refund, remove the game from shared devices and do not continue to use any retained files as though the license remained active.
Why country and contract details matter
There is no single worldwide rule that makes every digital game resalable. Copyright “exhaustion” or first-sale doctrines may treat physical goods differently from licensed downloads, and online games add servers, subscriptions and continuing services that complicate the analysis. Before relying on a transfer right, check four documents for the country and edition involved:
- The storefront or console agreement in force when the purchase was made.
- The publisher’s end-user license agreement for that game.
- Any separate terms for multiplayer, subscriptions, virtual currency or a publisher account.
- Local consumer and copyright law, preferably with advice from a qualified lawyer for a high-value dispute.
Terms, gifting features, sharing limits, refund windows and server requirements can change. Recheck them immediately before a sale, transfer or account closure.

Bottom line for buyers and sellers
For a digital game, assume “personal, account-bound license” unless the applicable regional terms and law clearly say otherwise. Major platform rules prohibit or do not support account sales and license transfers. Console sharing can let another user play without moving ownership, and gifting or a gift card lets someone obtain a new license. A physical disc or cartridge is generally the practical resale route, provided you separate the medium from redeemed codes, downloadable content, virtual goods and online services.
