Yes, but only briefly: The Outer Worlds 2 offers a respec opportunity after the initial prologue, following Horizon Point Station. Once that window has passed, the available information indicates that Skills and Perks cannot be reset through an ordinary in-game service. You can steer future level-up choices toward a different playstyle, or restart to make a fresh character from the beginning.
When can you respec in The Outer Worlds 2?
The respec opportunity comes after the initial prologue, after Horizon Point Station. Use it to revise your early build if you have changed your mind about how you want to play. The reporting on the game describes this as a limited early opportunity, not a reset option that remains available throughout the campaign.
After the story progresses beyond that point, Skills and Perks are set. Game director Brandon Adler told GamesRadar+ that character-build choices are meant to matter like story choices: “It’s important to me, personally, that in an RPG your choices always matter. And in the same way that I wouldn’t let you respec your story, I won’t let you respec what role you’re playing,” Adler told GamesRadar+.
Can you reset Skills or Perks later?
No ordinary later reset is described. Do not count on spending Bits or finding a late-game machine to wipe your Skills or Perks; the published explanation is that those build choices are fixed as the story advances.

What to do if you want a different build
Keep developing at future level-ups
You can still move your character toward another playstyle by putting future level-up choices into it. Adler’s advice for players who want to do more of a different activity was: “The next time you level up your character, start building towards that direction – there’s nothing stopping you from building the sort of character that you want!” This changes the direction of your build gradually; it does not erase earlier choices.
Restart for a fresh foundation
If you want to make different choices from the start, restarting is the practical route. That means replaying the earlier portion of the game, rather than using a dedicated reset feature. The trade-off is a clean build foundation at the cost of the progress you have already made.

Is the appearance editor a respec?
No. Patch 1.2.0.0 added an appearance editor, but it is for changing your character’s physical appearance, not their gameplay build. The update notes describe appearance editing while retaining the character’s actions and choices; it does not turn the editor into a Skills or Perks reset. Obsidian’s Patch 1.2.0.0 notes, published June 24, 2026, do not announce a change to the respec rules.

If you are restarting, decide which activities you want your character to excel at before committing to a build. Xbox Wire’s guide illustrates several possible directions, including stealth, companion leadership and explosives. These are examples to help you plan, not a universally best build: choose the approach that fits the way you want to play. Read the Xbox Wire build guide.
