No—not as a built-in YouTube feature. YouTube’s live-stream setup takes a feed from a webcam, mobile device, or encoder; it does not offer a native option to select a private playlist and broadcast it. A private playlist remains visible only to you and people you choose, and making the live broadcast private or unlisted does not change the playlist’s permissions.
Why a private playlist cannot simply become a live stream
YouTube treats playlist access and live-broadcast access as separate controls. A private playlist is visible only to its owner and people the owner selects. A live stream, by contrast, is created from an incoming feed. YouTube’s documented setup does not include a playlist as a live-stream source. YouTube’s privacy guidance and live-stream setup guidance describe these as distinct functions.
Playing videos through an encoder is a separate production workflow, not a way to override the permissions on private source videos. Anyone who needs to watch those videos must have access to them under YouTube’s own sharing rules.
What each visibility option lets viewers do
| Option | Who can watch | Can a link be reshared? | Public discovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private playlist | You and people you choose | No shareable playlist URL | Does not appear in search or recommendations |
| Unlisted playlist | Anyone with the link | Yes; recipients can pass it on | Not generally shown in search or recommendations; YouTube notes an unlisted video may appear in search if someone adds it to a public playlist |
| Public playlist | Anyone | Yes | May appear in search, related videos, and recommendations |
| Private or unlisted live stream | Set separately for the broadcast | Depends on the selected visibility and access | The broadcast’s setting does not alter access to its source videos |
These distinctions follow YouTube’s playlist privacy guidance and video privacy guidance. Unlisted is link-accessible, not confidential: a viewer can share the link with someone else.

Choose the right way to share a podcast
For on-demand listening
If link-based access is enough, set the playlist to unlisted and verify that each episode video is also viewable by the intended listeners. YouTube says anyone with the link can watch and share unlisted playlists and videos. If you need access limited to named people, private visibility is more restrictive, but it is not a public podcast feed.
For a restricted live broadcast
Create a live stream and choose private or unlisted visibility for the broadcast itself. That restricts access to the live event according to the selected setting; it does not turn a private playlist into the event’s source. YouTube’s encoder workflow sends an incoming live feed to the stream.

For eligible channel members
YouTube supports members-only live streams for channels with memberships when the feature is available. Its current help guidance limits this option to desktop streams that are not vertical. It is an audience-access option, not a method for sourcing private playlist videos. See YouTube’s members-only live-stream guidance.
Starting an encoder-based live stream
- Check eligibility: Enable live streaming on the channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours; the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio: Start a live stream using the encoder workflow and obtain the stream URL and stream key.
- Send a feed from your encoder: Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder, then preview the incoming feed before going live. The encoder sends a feed; it does not provide permission to play private videos to people who cannot access them.
- Select the broadcast visibility: Choose public, unlisted, or private according to who should watch. This choice is independent of playlist and episode visibility.
- Plan for the archive: YouTube may automatically archive streams under 12 hours. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so record a local backup if preserving the full episode matters. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
YouTube recommends testing with an unlisted stream before a members-only broadcast. This lets you check the production and access workflow before the intended audience joins.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep an uploaded podcast recording looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it does not change the permissions on private YouTube source videos—use media you have permission to stream and set the broadcast audience appropriately. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free day.
