ASUS reported roughly 45–60 FPS in early-game play on the Z1 Extreme at 25 W, while the crowded parts of Act 3 are more demanding and make a 30-FPS target more realistic. Those figures come from ASUS’s October 2023 test, not a guarantee for every Ally model or current game build.
Which ROG Ally models can run Baldur’s Gate 3?
The original ROG Ally and Z1 Extreme run the PC version of Baldur’s Gate 3. The Z1 Extreme is the best-established performance reference: ASUS tested that model specifically. The base Z1 should be treated as playable with greater performance compromises, not as equivalent to the Extreme.
The Ally X is also suitable, with more battery capacity and memory headroom than the original models; that does not remove the game’s CPU-related slowdowns in demanding Act 3 scenes. The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are newer, distinct products, so results from the 2023 Ally should not be assumed to describe them. Check the exact model and current drivers before applying performance expectations. ASUS’s Ally-specific performance guide documents the Z1 Extreme test.

What performance should you expect?
ASUS’s published reference is a Z1 Extreme running at 25-W Turbo, 1920×1080, with FSR Quality and tuned settings. ASUS reported roughly 45 FPS at the low end and just under 60 FPS in combat in early sections. It said performance in later areas was rarely below 30 FPS with its settings, while identifying Act 3’s busy city areas as substantially more CPU-intensive. The guide was published in October 2023, so patches, drivers, and current device settings can change results.

A steady 30 FPS can be a reasonable target for this turn-based RPG: it is less demanding than a high-refresh action game, though stutter and uneven frame pacing still affect responsiveness.
Does the Ally meet the PC requirements?
The published PC requirements list 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB RAM minimum, 16 GB recommended, DirectX 11, 150 GB of available storage, and an SSD. Larian also specifies a CPU with AVX2 support. The official requirements are available from Steam Support and Larian.

Meeting the listed minimum does not mean an Ally will perform like a desktop PC at those specifications. Its integrated graphics share system memory, and its power budget is designed for a handheld. Use tuned settings and leave more storage free than the 150 GB minimum where possible, since Windows, updates, and other installed games also need room.
Recommended starting graphics settings
ASUS’s Ally guide provides a useful starting profile for the Z1 Extreme, rather than a permanent best-settings prescription. Its test used DirectX 11, 1080p, FSR 2.2 Quality, and a 6-GB VRAM allocation. Menu labels and available options can change with game updates, so use the closest current equivalents.

At native 1080p, the picture is sharpest because it matches the Ally display, but the GPU has more work to do. If performance is uneven, try 900p as a compromise or 720p for more headroom. FSR Quality is a sensible first adjustment; more aggressive upscaling can improve performance further but makes fine details and text softer. Which trade-off feels best depends on whether you prioritize clarity, battery life, or steadier performance.
How to improve performance in Act 3
Act 3 is the main qualification to the simple answer that the game runs. Crowds and complex city scenes place more pressure on the CPU than the opening areas. ASUS specifically recommends turning Dynamic Crowds off. Try changes in this order so you can identify which one helps:

- Set Dynamic Crowds to Off and Animation Level of Detail to Low.
- Use the Ally’s performance profile, preferably while connected to power.
- If dips persist, lower the resolution or move FSR from Quality to a more aggressive mode.
- Reduce shadows and demanding atmospheric effects such as fog.
- If frame pacing remains inconsistent, cap the frame rate at 30 FPS.
- Test changes in a saved Act 3 scene; performance in the opening area does not predict the busiest city scenes.
Because this game is turn-based, accepting a stable 30-FPS cap can feel better than allowing a higher but inconsistent frame rate. It will not make every demanding scene identical, but it provides a practical target.

The Ally runs Windows 11 and supports PC storefronts including Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Xbox/PC game libraries. ASUS describes this platform support in its ROG Ally announcement. Buy or access the game through the storefront where you own it; compatibility with Game Pass does not mean Baldur’s Gate 3 is included in its current catalog.

- Update Windows and the graphics drivers for your specific Ally model. Larian recommends current graphics drivers in its system requirements and support information.
- Install the game through the launcher tied to your purchase, such as Steam, GOG, or Epic.
- Use the touchscreen or desktop-style controls if the launcher or Windows interface is awkward with the built-in gamepad.
- Launch the game and begin with DirectX 11 and the graphics profile above; adjust after testing your own save.
The built-in controls make handheld play practical, but inventory and menus can be slower to manage than with a mouse. A Bluetooth or USB mouse and keyboard can help with character creation or inventory work. For desktop-style navigation, ASUS documents switching the Command Center control mode to Desktop Mode in its ROG Ally FAQ.
Power, battery, storage, and co-op trade-offs
Power and battery
ASUS’s 45–60 FPS early-game figures were measured on a Z1 Extreme at 25-W Turbo. Maximum performance typically means using a high-power profile and connecting the charger; a lower-wattage battery profile extends play time at the cost of frame-rate headroom. The exact balance varies by model and settings, so do not treat plugged-in results as battery expectations.
Storage
The game’s 150-GB SSD requirement makes space a real constraint, particularly on smaller drives with several large games installed. Internal SSD installation is the safest default for load times and reliability. A microSD card or external drive may be convenient, but performance and reliability vary by device; neither should be assumed equivalent to internal storage. Replacing the internal SSD involves opening the handheld, so it is best left to users comfortable with the installation and warranty implications.
Local split-screen and online co-op
Do not assume smooth local split-screen on the Ally. The official requirements warn that split-screen may not run at an acceptable level on minimum-spec systems. Online co-op is a different workload, but without model-specific testing it is not appropriate to promise a particular frame rate for it.

Is Baldur’s Gate 3 worth playing on a ROG Ally?
- Good fit: You want portable solo play, already own an Ally, and are comfortable tuning graphics settings for smoother performance.
- Best-established baseline: The Z1 Extreme, because ASUS published Ally-specific results for that model. The Ally X adds battery and memory headroom, though it does not guarantee a locked 60 FPS in Act 3.
- Expect compromises: You want desktop-level visuals, a locked 60 FPS in every area, long sessions at maximum performance on battery, or effortless Windows navigation.
- Think twice about local co-op: Split-screen has an official minimum-spec performance warning, so it is a less certain fit than solo handheld play.
