How Much VRAM Does the GTX 1070 Have?

The standard desktop GTX 1070 has 8 GB of GDDR5 VRAM, a 256-bit bus, and about 256 GB/s of bandwidth—but capacity alone does not define modern gaming performance.

The standard desktop NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 has 8 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM. It uses a 256-bit memory bus and delivers about 256 GB/s of nominal memory bandwidth. It was not normally sold as a 4 GB or 6 GB desktop card. That 8 GB figure tells you how much memory is installed, though—not how fast the GPU is or how much every game can use.

GTX 1070 memory specifications

NVIDIA’s GTX 1070 launch announcement specifies 8 GB of GDDR5. The reference memory rate and bus width work out to roughly 256 GB/s of bandwidth; TechPowerUp lists about 256.3 GB/s for a GTX 1070 variant in its GPU database.

Specification Standard desktop GTX 1070
Dedicated VRAM 8 GB
Memory type GDDR5
Effective memory rate 8 Gbps
Memory bus 256-bit
Nominal memory bandwidth About 256 GB/s
GPU architecture Pascal
GPU GP104
Reference TDP 150 W
Release date June 10, 2016

Bandwidth follows from the data rate and bus width: 8 gigabits per second × 256 bits ÷ 8 bits per byte = 256 GB/s. This is a theoretical transfer rate, not a promise of that throughput in every game.

Capacity and bandwidth describe different things. Capacity is how much graphics data can reside in memory; bandwidth is how quickly data can move to and from it. The GTX 1070 uses GDDR5, while the GTX 1080 used GDDR5X, so their shared 8 GB capacity does not mean they have the same memory performance. NVIDIA’s Turing architecture white paper provides architectural comparisons across generations.

What “8 GB” means—and what Windows may show

The 8 GB is physical memory on the graphics card, separate from the PC’s ordinary system RAM. Depending on how software reports units, 8 GB may appear as approximately 8,192 MB or as a slightly different number. Windows, the display driver, the desktop, and other GPU work also use memory, so an application’s available budget can be lower than the card’s full installed capacity.

  • Dedicated GPU memory is the GTX 1070’s onboard VRAM.
  • Shared GPU memory is system RAM that Windows may make available to graphics workloads. It is not extra onboard VRAM and is not a performance-equivalent substitute.
  • A game’s memory meter may estimate a budget or report allocated resources, rather than measure exactly how much physical VRAM is free.

A reading slightly below 8 GB therefore does not, on its own, mean the card is defective. Check that the tool is showing the GTX 1070 rather than an integrated GPU, and compare the dedicated-memory total rather than a combined graphics-memory figure.

How to check the VRAM in your PC

Task Manager

  1. Right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance, then choose the GTX 1070 under GPU. On a system with more than one GPU, verify the adapter name.
  3. Read Dedicated GPU memory or its usage/total figures. Do not mistake Shared GPU memory for physical card memory.

Labels and layout can vary by Windows version and build.

DirectX Diagnostic Tool

  1. Press Windows + R, type dxdiag, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Display or Render tab for the NVIDIA adapter.
  3. Check the adapter name and memory information. Depending on the system, the tool may use labels such as “Display Memory” or “Dedicated Memory,” and its value may not match every utility exactly.

GPU-Z

TechPowerUp GPU-Z can identify the GPU and show memory size, type, bus width, clocks, BIOS, and board information. This is useful when checking a used card or investigating a model name that does not match the listing. NVIDIA Control Panel can help confirm the active GPU and driver, but it may not be the clearest place to verify the complete physical memory specification.

Why GTX 1070 cards can differ despite having 8 GB

Board partners made cards with different coolers, PCB layouts, factory clocks, BIOS settings, dimensions, display outputs, and power connectors. Those choices can affect temperatures, noise, and performance, but do not usually change the standard desktop GTX 1070’s 8 GB capacity. TechPowerUp’s entries for the Sapphire GTX 1070 OEM and ZOTAC GTX 1070 PGF Extreme OC illustrate variation between board designs.

This answer is specifically about the standard desktop GTX 1070. Laptop implementations can have different power limits, clocks, cooling, and performance; check the exact laptop or GPU model. The GTX 1070 Ti is also a separate model, although it generally has 8 GB of GDDR5 as well. Memory size alone cannot tell you which model a listing contains.

Is 8 GB enough for gaming?

It depends on resolution, texture settings, game, and the GPU’s rendering speed. The GTX 1070’s age and processing performance can limit frame rates before its memory fills, so do not treat a VRAM capacity as a forecast of performance.

At 1080p

Eight gigabytes remains useful for many 1080p games, including older and well-optimized titles. High texture settings may be workable in many cases, but the card’s rendering capability can be the more important limit in demanding games. If you see memory-related stutter or texture problems, lower texture quality or optional high-resolution texture packs first.

At 1440p

The 8 GB framebuffer can help, but demanding modern games may call for medium-to-high settings rather than a default assumption of ultra. Texture quality and render resolution solve different problems: lowering textures can reduce memory pressure; lowering resolution or render scale reduces the GPU’s rendering workload.

At 4K and with demanding texture packs

Eight gigabytes is increasingly restrictive in demanding games with high-resolution assets. Even when memory capacity is not the immediate issue, the GTX 1070 may not render a game smoothly at native 4K. Resolution scaling can reduce the rendering load while retaining a 4K display output.

When a game exceeds its memory budget

Possible symptoms include texture pop-in, loading pauses, frame-time spikes, reduced texture quality, or—in particularly poorly optimized software—crashes. A warning or a meter above a nominal budget is not an automatic failure threshold: games differ in how they estimate and manage memory. Watch frame-time behavior and visual symptoms as well as the meter.

If performance points to memory pressure, lower texture quality, remove optional high-resolution assets, and close unnecessary overlays or GPU-accelerated applications. If the GPU is simply overloaded, reduce resolution or render scale instead. Shared system memory may permit continued operation, but heavy reliance on it is not a substitute for VRAM.

Why 8 GB does not make the GTX 1070 equivalent to a modern 8 GB card

The GTX 1070 launched in 2016 on Pascal. Memory capacity is only one part of a GPU: architecture, shader performance, bandwidth, power efficiency, features, and software support all matter. NVIDIA’s Turing white paper identifies the GTX 1070’s Pascal generation as lacking the dedicated RT and tensor cores associated with later RTX hardware.

The GTX 1070 can run some software-enabled ray-tracing workloads, but it lacks dedicated RT hardware, so performance and image-quality compromises can be substantial. Do not confuse that with an RTX card’s dedicated ray-tracing capability. Newer GPUs can also offer newer AI acceleration, upscaling, encoding and display features, along with higher performance per watt. Equal VRAM capacity does not make their performance or capabilities equal.

What to check before buying a used GTX 1070

Do not buy on the “8GB” label alone. Confirm the model and condition, and assess the seller’s return terms. Listings on eBay’s GTX 1070 marketplace can vary widely; asking prices are not verified completed-sale prices or a reliable fair-value average.

  • Use GPU-Z to verify that the card identifies as a GeForce GTX 1070 and reports approximately 8 GB of memory; check that the name is not a GTX 1060 or GTX 1070 Ti if the specific model matters to you.
  • Ask for evidence that it passes a sustained graphics test without artifacts. Check that fans work, temperatures remain reasonable, and display outputs function.
  • Confirm the actual card’s power connectors and physical dimensions against your power supply and case; board partners may differ.
  • Ask about mining history, warranty, and returns. Avoid “as-is,” defective, or parts-only listings unless you knowingly want a repair project.
  • Compare the total cost, including shipping and risk, with newer cards rather than treating the VRAM figure as proof of value.

Common GTX 1070 VRAM misconceptions

  • “It has 8 GB, so it can use 8 GB of system RAM too.” Shared system memory is not onboard VRAM and is much slower in this role.
  • “Two 8 GB cards give a game 16 GB.” Conventional multi-GPU setups do not generally pool their memory into a simple 16 GB allocation; software must support the arrangement, and each GPU retains its own memory.
  • “The game says I’m over budget, so the card must crash.” A warning is not a universal failure threshold; behavior depends on the game and workload.
  • “Any 8 GB GPU performs like any other.” Capacity does not describe the GPU’s compute speed, memory bandwidth, feature set, or efficiency.
