Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes, DOOM can run before Windows starts—but the documented example is a separate UEFI application launched from a UEFI Shell, not a game built into a PC’s BIOS or setup screen. The UEFI-DOOM project describes how to run doom.efi from a FAT32-accessible drive and reports testing in QEMU with OVMF and on two named computers. Those are project-reported test cases, not a promise that it will work on every PC.
Can you play DOOM from a UEFI shell?
Yes. The UEFI-DOOM project describes itself as “A port of DOOM to UEFI systems.” Its documented route is to boot into a UEFI Shell and run the separate doom.efi application before an operating system loads. That is what the headline shorthand “in your BIOS” means here; it does not mean DOOM is a built-in feature of a motherboard’s firmware setup screen.
UEFI is the firmware interface involved in this example. The port’s procedure requires a UEFI-capable environment and a FAT32 partition accessible to the shell.
What do you need to launch it?
- A UEFI-capable computer or virtual machine that can start a UEFI Shell.
- A FAT32-formatted USB key or other accessible FAT32 partition containing the shell and the application.
- The
doom.efiexecutable and DOOM IWAD game data, which the project instructions say to place alongside it.
The README’s run instructions describe preparing a FAT32 USB key with a UEFI Shell binary, booting into that shell, changing to the filesystem that contains doom.efi, and typing doom. The repository also documents project-specific build steps using EDK II, the Visual Studio 2015 toolset and EDK II LibC. This is a developer-oriented demo, not a plug-and-play option on an ordinary PC.

- REIGN IN HELL — Witness the creation of a legend as the Slayer fights Hell’s forces and confronts their leader in a medieval war.
The instructions call for IWAD files but do not specify a purchase or licensing route for commercial game data. Freedoom is a separate free-software project that provides game data based on the Doom engine; its repository says it is not an engine and must be paired with one. The cited project materials do not establish that Freedoom works with UEFI-DOOM, so treat it as an alternative to investigate, not confirmed compatible data.
Which systems does the project report testing?
The UEFI-DOOM README names three test environments:
Rank #2
- A Relentless Campaign: There is no taking cover or stopping to regenerate health as you beat back Hell's raging demon hordes
- Return of id Multiplayer: Dominate your opponents in DOOM's signature, fast-paced arena-style combat
- Near-Limitless Gameplay: DOOM SnapMap - A powerful, but easy-to-use game and level editor that allows for limitless gameplay experiences on every platform
- QEMU with OVMF.
- An MSI B150M-PRO-VD UEFI firmware environment.
- An HP Pavilion 8th Gen laptop.
These are the project’s own reported test cases, not independent test results or a compatibility list. The README also lists a workaround in its sprite-loading code and says audio support is planned. It does not establish universal performance, sound or input behavior.

No. UEFI is a specification; EDK2 is an implementation that can provide UEFI services. coreboot’s FAQ explains that coreboot does not implement the UEFI specification, but can initialize a system and launch a UEFI payload such as EDK2 to provide UEFI boot services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Doom The Classics Collection physical game for Nintendo Swith.
- This includes three classic DOOM games preserved on one cartridge - DOOM, DOOM II, and DOOM 3! No game downloads required.
- Includes a full-color manual and reversible cover art.
That firmware-to-payload model is separate from the UEFI-DOOM README’s procedure for launching an application from a UEFI Shell. coreboot’s project documentation says it distributes source code rather than ready-to-install firmware binaries and notes that building and recovering firmware may require specialized knowledge and physical tools. The DOOM example is not an instruction to flash a computer’s firmware.
