Can You Run RPCS3 on a PS5? What PS3 Emulation Requires

RPCS3 is for supported computer operating systems, not an ordinary PS5. Here’s what PS3 emulation requires and how it differs from Sony’s compatibility and streaming features.

No—not as a supported, native app on an ordinary PS5. RPCS3 lists Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD as its supported platforms, not PlayStation 5. Sony also says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. To emulate PS3 games with RPCS3, you need a compatible computer and should check both the emulator’s current requirements and the compatibility status of the specific game.

Why RPCS3 does not run on a PS5

RPCS3 is an open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger for computer operating systems. Its project site lists Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD; it does not list PS5 as a platform. That means there is no supported RPCS3 installation path for a standard PS5. RPCS3’s official site also cautions that not every game is fully compatible.

Console backward compatibility is a separate matter from running an emulator. Sony’s support page says, “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” That describes PS3 disc playback on PS5; it is not a claim about every possible modified-console configuration. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance says the console supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but not PS3 discs.

What you need to run RPCS3 on a computer

For RPCS3, the practical requirements depend on the particular build. Start with an operating system listed by the project, then check the current requirements for that build, including hardware and graphics-driver support. Finally, look up the game you want to play in the compatibility list: support for the emulator itself does not guarantee that a particular title will run as you expect.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately
  • A supported operating system: RPCS3 lists Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD.
  • Suitable hardware and graphics support: requirements vary by architecture and build, so use the project’s current guidance for your system.
  • A game with an acceptable compatibility status: consult the live RPCS3 Compatibility List for the specific title. Its status categories can change over time.

A specific example: the Linux ARM64 build

In a developer article published on December 9, 2024, RPCS3 described requirements for its Linux ARM64 build: an ARMv8.2-A CPU, at least 8 GB of RAM, and an OpenGL 4.3-compatible or Vulkan-capable GPU and drivers. These are requirements for that described ARM64 build—not universal requirements for x64 Windows or every other RPCS3 build. The article also notes that ARM64 support and distribution vary by operating system. Read RPCS3’s ARM64 announcement.

PS5 game options are not the same as RPCS3

If you want to play a PS3-era game while using PlayStation hardware, distinguish the available routes rather than treating them as interchangeable:

  • Cloud streaming: Sony offers streaming for selected games under its PlayStation service conditions. This is a separate service feature, not RPCS3 running on the PS5. Check Sony’s current cloud-streaming page for game, regional and membership availability. Sony’s PS Portal FAQ says PS4 and PS3 games cannot currently be streamed to Portal; that limitation concerns Portal, not a blanket statement about all PS5 cloud streaming.

What to check before choosing RPCS3

  1. Identify the computer and build you would use. Confirm that its operating system is listed by RPCS3 and consult requirements for that build and architecture.
  2. Check your chosen game in the compatibility list. Read its current status rather than assuming all PS3 games work equally well.
  3. Decide whether you need local emulation or a PlayStation service. RPCS3 requires a supported computer platform; Sony’s streaming catalog is selected and availability can vary.
