Yes. Industrial computed tomography (CT) has been used to image cards inside some sealed Pokémon products, and a company has published examples of recognizable card features. That does not mean every pack can be read reliably: the examples are not an independent accuracy study, and results across sets, wrappers and card variants have not been established.
How CT can reveal a card inside a sealed pack
Industrial CT takes images of internal structure by measuring how material affects radiation passing through it. In the reported Pokémon examples, image processing helped distinguish card layers and features from the surrounding foil. This is not ordinary visual inspection through a wrapper, and it requires specialized industrial imaging equipment.
A patent describes a process in which an emitter and detector capture a sealed package, then software creates an image of a card layer, virtually flattens it, enhances contrast and attempts to identify the card from its image and text. That is a description of a proposed method, not an independent demonstration of performance.
What has been demonstrated
Industrial Inspection & Consulting says its team used density differences in cards and foil to extract Pokémon shapes. Its case study describes an initial test with a first-edition Fossil Hypno card placed among several other cards, followed by scans of Fossil packs and an XY Evolutions kit in which it reports identifying an M Blastoise EX. These are company-reported examples, not results from a representative test across products.

Industrial Inspection & Consulting’s case study presents the examples as a way to see cards without opening a box. The patent also describes identifying a card in a sealed package, but its disclosure does not establish how accurately the method works in practice.
Why a scan does not guarantee identification
The available examples do not establish universal performance. They do not give independently measured accuracy rates or show results across all Pokémon sets, card variants, wrapper materials and product eras. A successful example can show that a feature was visible in that setup; it cannot show how often scans correctly identify cards in other packs.

The patent discusses possible ways to disrupt or detect scans, including material that creates imaging artifacts, a radiation-detection mechanism or a component that induces movement inside a package. These are patent-described countermeasures, not evidence that Pokémon products use them.
A 2024 Nintendo Life report described public attention around CT demonstrations and said Industrial Inspection & Consulting was offering paid scanning at that time. It does not independently measure accuracy, and that report alone does not confirm that the service is available now, where it operates, or what it currently costs.

How CT scanning differs from weighing a pack
Weighing is a separate, less informative approach discussed by collectors for some older packs. Collector guides say holofoil cards may weigh slightly more, so precise comparisons could sort packs into probable categories. But weight does not identify a particular card or establish that a pack is untampered.
One guide notes that weighing may more readily reveal missing card stock than a substitution with a card of similar weight. Humidity and the lack of a same-set reference distribution can also complicate comparisons. The reviewed guides provide no validated universal weight threshold.

The available sources do not provide controlled comparative data on cost, equipment access, identification accuracy or tampering detection for either method. Treat weighing as a limited clue, not a substitute for imaging or a guarantee about a pack’s contents.
What to ask before trusting a scan claim
- What does the result identify? Ask whether the claim is only about detecting a likely foil or whether it names a specific card.
- What product was tested? Set, era and packaging matter; examples from one setup do not establish results for another.
- How was accuracy checked? A clear account should distinguish company demonstrations from independent, representative validation.
- Does the claim address tampering? A scan result is not, by itself, proof that a pack is authentic or untouched.
- Is a scanning service actually available? The 2024 report is historical context, not confirmation of current availability, service area, price or terms.
If a sealed pack is being sold as unscanned or as containing a particular card, seek clear disclosure and provenance. The evidence here does not establish how common scanning is or whether any given pack has been scanned.
