You can still host a private Custom Game with friends, using Halo 3 in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) for the current supported route, or the original Xbox 360 game where its online service is available.
What you can set up instead
Halo 3’s multiplayer maximum is 16 players, not 64. That is a limit of the game; choosing a private lobby, using the Custom Game Browser, playing across Xbox and PC, or adding another console does not raise it. The 16-player figure is corroborated by a Halo 3 reference; the original Microsoft manual documents privacy controls rather than this player-count figure.

How to invite friends to Halo 3 in MCC
For current online play, Halo Support’s MCC Quick Start Guide provides the supported friend-invite route. MCC is available on Xbox and Windows, and its multiplayer supports Xbox/PC cross-play.
- Check access: each online friend needs their own copy of MCC and an Xbox account.
- Add one another on the Xbox network: make sure your friends are available there before launching the session.
- Open MCC and go to the in-game Roster.
- Select a friend and choose “Invite Player.” Repeat for each person; accepted invitations appear in the session roster.
- Start a Halo 3 multiplayer Custom Game and use the available privacy controls to keep the session limited to your invited group.
If you close and restart MCC, send the invitations again. Support guidance says invites must be re-sent after restarting the game.

How the original Halo 3 privacy settings work
The original Microsoft manual describes privacy settings for a Custom Games party. From the Custom Games lobby, the party leader chooses a network mode, then selects Xbox LIVE privacy under Network. The listed choices are Open Party, Friends Only, and Invite Only. The party leader can invite people from the friends list.
Those choices govern who can join; they do not increase the 16-player maximum. Because the manual is historical, it should not be taken as confirmation that original Xbox 360 online services or every legacy feature remains available now. Use MCC’s current support guidance for present-day invitations and cross-platform play.

Current MCC issues to know about
Halo Support’s Global Known Issues page reflects status as of February 26, 2026, on build 1.3528.0.0. It lists occasional Halo 3 freezes during multiplayer and online disconnections. It also notes a Halo 3 Custom Game Browser issue in which players may create a private Custom Game instead of joining the intended browser session. If that happens, check that you are in the intended session before inviting everyone.
The MCC update history records a September 2025 fix for a cross-platform matchmaking issue affecting Xbox PC and Microsoft Store versions, and a December service update that fixed rare Halo 3 multiplayer server crashes. These are dated update notes, not a guarantee that every connection or session issue has been eliminated.
