Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement prohibits sharing account credentials unless Valve specifically authorizes it. That does not mean Steam has ended game sharing: Steam Families lets eligible games be accessed from separate accounts.
Can I share my Steam account?
Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement, section 1.C, says: “You may not reveal, share or otherwise allow others to use your password or Account except as otherwise specifically authorized by Valve.” The agreement also bars selling, charging for, or transferring an account, subject to its stated exceptions.
Steam Support likewise warns against sharing accounts on its Contested Steam account ownership page. The rule concerns access to the account itself; it is not a ban on every form of sharing games.
How Steam Families shares games without sharing accounts
Valve announced Steam Families on March 18, 2024, as a replacement for Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View. The announcement’s update says the feature left beta and became available to all Steam users on September 11, 2024. Each family member uses their own Steam account, rather than signing in as the person who bought a game. Members can access eligible games in the family library, while the purchaser retains ownership; players keep their own saves and achievements. See Valve’s Steam Families announcement and FAQ.

Who can be in a Steam Family?
Valve describes Steam Families as intended for up to six close family members in one household. This is Valve’s stated scope for the feature; the announcement does not establish a universal ban on friends as an enforcement rule or explain how household status is checked.
Membership also has cooldowns. According to Valve’s announcement, an adult who leaves a family must wait one year from joining the previous family before joining or creating another. A slot opened when someone leaves has a one-year cooldown before it can be filled.
Which games can a family share?
Not every game is eligible. Developers can opt their games out, and some titles cannot be shared for technical reasons, such as requiring a third-party key, account, or subscription. Eligibility can vary by game; check the Steam Families FAQ or the game’s Steam store listing rather than assuming every title in a library will appear.
You do not have to share every eligible game. Steam Families lets members choose which games to share from their libraries, according to Valve’s FAQ.

Can two family members play the same game at once?
Yes, if the family has enough licenses. For two members to play the same title simultaneously, the family needs two copies of that game. A single copy does not become two concurrent licenses merely because it is in a family library.
Do shared games work offline, and what happens if someone cheats?
Valve says supported shared games can be played offline. Offline availability is not guaranteed for every title: a game with its own online connection or third-party requirements may still need them.

Valve also warns that if a family member cheats while playing a shared copy of a game, the owner of that copy may be banned in that game. Valve says other family members are not impacted under this rule. The possibility of consequences is a reason not to treat a shared license as risk-free access.

For developers, Valve’s Steamworks Steam Families documentation describes family-sharing licenses as temporary access rather than a transfer of ownership.
