Nintendo’s virtual game card system lets other users on the same console play loaded DLC, and lets you lend eligible DLC virtual game cards to members of your Nintendo Account family group for up to 14 days. A separate-console loan requires the consoles to be nearby and online to start, and you cannot use the lent card until it is returned or the loan ends.
How DLC sharing works
| Situation | What family members can do | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Different users on the same console | Play DLC when its virtual game card is loaded on that console. | Nintendo says a loaded card can be played offline and used by other users on the console. Nintendo Virtual Game Card Guide |
| Family member on a separate console | Borrow an eligible DLC virtual game card from a member of the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group. | The consoles must be nearby and connected to the internet to begin lending or borrowing. Access lasts up to 14 days, and the lender cannot use the card during the loan. Nintendo Virtual Game Card Guide |
Sharing provides play access under Nintendo’s virtual game card rules; it does not transfer the purchase. Nintendo says digital purchases are tied to the Nintendo Account that bought them. Digital Game Purchases on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch

How the base game affects DLC sharing
If the base game is digital
Nintendo manages the digital game and its DLC together as one virtual game card for loading or lending. You lend or load that card rather than treating the DLC as a separate card. Nintendo Switch 2 FAQ
If the base game is physical
The DLC has its own virtual game card, but the person playing it still needs access to the main game—either the physical game card or a digital copy. Lending DLC alone does not provide the base game. Nintendo Switch 2 FAQ

Requirements and lending limits
- The recipient must belong to the lender’s Nintendo Account family group. Nintendo’s family-group information describes the group used for these account relationships: Family Group.
- The consoles must be near each other and both connected to the internet to lend or borrow a card.
- A borrower can borrow only one virtual game card at a time.
- A lender can lend up to three virtual game cards at once, but only one card can be lent to a particular console at a time.
- The standard loan ends automatically after 14 days. Either side can return the card earlier through Nintendo’s process. Nintendo: Lending Virtual Game Cards to a Member of Your Family Group
- Some software cannot be lent. If the lending option is unavailable, check the specific title and systems against Nintendo’s current guide; eligibility and cross-generation compatibility can vary.
What happens to the lender’s access
While a virtual game card is lent, its purchaser cannot play that card. Nintendo says access resumes when the recipient returns it, the lender retrieves it, or the standard 14-day period ends. Plan around that restriction if the purchaser also wants to play the game or DLC during the loan. Nintendo Virtual Game Card Guide

- For another profile on your console: Load the relevant virtual game card on that console. Other users on the console can then play it, including offline.
- For a family member’s separate console: Confirm that the recipient is in your Nintendo Account family group and that both consoles can connect to the internet while nearby.
- Open the Virtual Game Cards menu and lend the eligible card to the recipient’s console. The card must be available; you cannot lend a card that is already in use as a loan.
- Check the base-game requirement: For DLC associated with a physical game, make sure the recipient can also play the main game.
