Depending on the title, you may use a direct Wait menu, sleep in a bed or camp, select Morning/Noon/Night at a campfire, or remain in a sleep state while time runs faster.
What “skipping nighttime” actually means
Open-world games handle the day-night cycle in different ways. Some advance the clock by a precise number of hours; others offer only broad destinations such as morning, noon, or night. A few simulate the passage of time at high speed instead of moving the clock instantly.

The interaction can also be restricted. Combat, a scripted scene, a quest objective, a survival rule, a cooldown, weather conditions, or your current location may disable time advancement. Instructions that work in one game therefore cannot be assumed to work in another.
When looking for the right command, identify four details: how precise the destination can be, where the interaction is available, whether the transition is instant or simulated, and what restrictions apply.

The four common ways games change the time of day
1. A direct Wait menu
A Wait command is the most flexible design. Instead of finding a bed or camp, you open a menu, choose a duration, and let the game advance the clock. Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition manual lists “Wait” among the default controls, making it the clearest example of this pattern.
A direct wait is useful when you need a particular hour rather than simply daylight. It can also be faster than travelling to a settlement. However, the manual entry does not mean the command is available in every circumstance. Titles may block waiting during combat, during scripted scenes, or when survival settings impose fatigue, hunger, or other constraints. If the command is missing or unavailable, leave combat, finish the active scene, and check whether a survival mode or quest rule is responsible.
2. Sleeping in a bed or at a camp
Many games tie time advancement to a sleep action. The location may be a permanent bed, a rented room, a player shelter, a faction camp, or a temporary wilderness camp. Sleeping often provides a small set of destination periods rather than an hour-by-hour slider.
Red Dead Redemption 2 documents several places where Arthur can sleep: the gang camp, a wilderness camp, and hotel rooms in towns. The available choices are sleep until morning, noon, or evening. PowerPyx reports that the game permits two consecutive sleeps before a cooldown, so sleeping is a practical way to clear darkness but not an unlimited loop. If the option stops appearing, wait for the cooldown instead of repeatedly rebuilding the camp.

Bed-based systems can also carry side effects. A sleep action may restore health or other resources, advance a quest timer, alter NPC schedules, or move the weather simulation forward. Read the destination labels before confirming when an objective depends on a particular time.
3. Choosing a destination at a campfire or bed
Some games present time change as a destination choice. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, approach a campfire and choose to sit, or use a bed. The menu offers Morning, Noon, or Night. This lets you bypass an inconvenient time of day and can also move you past unfavorable weather.
The transition is a clock setting, not a fast-forward through every intermediate minute. A related Zelda time reference models the in-game day on a 0–360 range and describes campfire and sleep transitions as setting the clock directly to the selected destination. You therefore do not need to remain beside the fire while the normal day-night cycle runs.
Because the choices are broad, this method is less precise than a Wait menu. If you need a specific hour for a timed event, look for a different interaction or use the game’s normal clock until the event becomes available.

4. An accelerated sleep simulation
Not every title jumps to dawn. One official developer announcement describes sleeping in a bed or tactical tent while nighttime runs at 400% speed, with a complete cycle taking up to three real-time minutes. In that design, entering the sleep state is the command; the game then simulates the remaining hours.
Do not cancel the interaction because the screen does not change immediately. Remain in the sleep state until the desired period arrives. The exact duration depends on how much in-game night remains, so a full three-minute cycle is a maximum for the cited example, not a universal rule.
5. Fast travel as a secondary time skip
Fast travel is primarily a movement system, but travelling can also advance elapsed in-game time. Rockstar Support describes setting up a camp in single-player Red Dead Redemption and choosing “Travel to Destination” for a visited town or waypoint. That journey can move the clock forward even though the menu is not labelled as a sleep or wait command.

Use fast travel only when the destination and route are acceptable. It may consume supplies, trigger encounters, alter mission timing, or leave you at a different location than a simple wait would. Treat it as a way to combine movement and time passage, not as a guaranteed replacement for sleeping.

How to pass time until morning
Use this process when you do not know which time-change system a game supports:
- Check the pause, controls, or interaction menu. Look for labels such as Wait, Rest, Sleep, Sit, Camp, or Pass Time. A direct command is usually listed alongside other controls.
- Leave activities that commonly block time changes. Finish combat, dismiss an active scripted prompt, and move away from a mission trigger. Some survival modes also require you to satisfy a fatigue or safety condition.
- Search for a valid interaction point. Try a bed, hotel room, player camp, wilderness camp, or campfire. If the game uses location-based sleeping, the option will not appear in the open world.
- Read the destination choices. Choose Morning if you need daylight, Noon if a quest requires the middle of the day, or Evening/Night when a nocturnal event is scheduled. Do not assume “sleep” always means dawn.
- Confirm whether the transition is instant. A clock jump finishes immediately; an accelerated simulation requires you to remain in place. Interrupting the latter may leave the time unchanged.
- Check for cooldowns or one-time limits. If a second sleep is unavailable, the game may require real-time waiting, travel, or a different rest location before it permits another advance.
- Verify the result on the world clock. Weather, lighting, NPC schedules, and quest markers can lag behind the transition for a moment. If the time did not change, try another valid location rather than repeating a blocked command.
Method comparison
| Method | Typical precision | Where it works | Transition | Example or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Wait menu | Often a chosen duration or hour | Potentially anywhere the command is allowed | Usually an immediate clock advance | Skyrim Special Edition lists Wait among its default controls; combat and other rules may block it. |
| Bed or camp sleep | Usually broad periods such as morning, noon, or evening | Beds, hotels, permanent camps, or wilderness camps | Instant in some games; simulated in others | Red Dead Redemption 2 supports the gang camp, wilderness camp, and hotel rooms, with a two-sleep cooldown reported by PowerPyx. |
| Campfire destination choice | Preset destinations such as Morning, Noon, or Night | Campfires or beds | Directly sets the clock | Tears of the Kingdom uses this approach and can bypass unfavorable weather. |
| Accelerated sleep | Any point reached as the simulation runs | A bed or tactical tent | Time runs faster rather than jumping instantly | One official developer announcement specifies 400% speed and up to three real-time minutes for a full cycle. |
| Fast travel | Depends on route duration | Unlocked towns, waypoints, or destinations | Travel simulation advances elapsed time | Rockstar Support documents “Travel to Destination” from a camp in single-player Red Dead Redemption; movement, not time control, is the primary purpose. |
Why the option is unavailable
You are in combat or a restricted scene
Most games suppress waiting and sleeping while enemies are engaged, a scripted conversation is active, or a mission has locked the player into a sequence. Clear the encounter and move beyond the trigger before trying again.
The location is not valid
A bed may work only in a room you own or have rented. A wilderness camp may require an open, safe area. A campfire interaction can require an unoccupied fire rather than a decorative object. If no prompt appears, test a known settlement bed or another camp location.
A cooldown or survival rule is active
Repeated sleep may be limited, as in the two-consecutive-sleeps rule reported for Red Dead Redemption 2. Survival modes can add fatigue, hunger, temperature, or shelter requirements. Wait for the cooldown or meet the stated condition instead of treating the missing prompt as a bug.

The game is simulating time, not skipping it
During a 400%-speed sleep system, the world may appear unchanged until enough real time has passed. Stay in the sleep state for the full cycle. Exiting early can cancel the advance.
The destination is not the period you expected
“Sleep” may offer evening rather than dawn, while a campfire may provide only Morning, Noon, and Night. Inspect the actual labels and select the closest period. If the required event needs an exact hour, use a direct Wait control or let the normal clock run.
Choosing the best method for a specific objective
- Need an exact hour: prefer a direct Wait menu, if available.
- Need daylight quickly: choose Morning at a bed or campfire.
- Need to move and advance time: use fast travel only when the destination is useful.
- Want to preserve a particular weather state: check the game’s rules; in Tears of the Kingdom, campfire and bed transitions can bypass unfavorable weather, so the change may affect more than lighting.
- Playing with survival mechanics: expect additional restrictions and resource costs before the game allows rest.
The reliable principle is simple: look for the game’s own time-change interaction, then follow its destination choices and restrictions. “Skipping night” can mean an exact wait, a three-period selection, a cooldown-limited sleep, or several minutes of accelerated simulation depending on the title.
