Yes—but access depends on what you already own and which Xbox you use. Forza Horizon (2012), often called Forza Horizon 1, is no longer available to buy digitally from the Microsoft Store. If you already own a digital copy, Xbox says compatible purchased games remain playable; otherwise, the practical route is a used Xbox 360 disc. That disc works only on a compatible Xbox with a disc drive, and the game’s online services have closed.
How to get Forza Horizon 1 today
| Your situation | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| You already own the digital game | Check your Xbox library or Ready to Install section. | Xbox says previously purchased compatible Xbox 360 games remain playable through backward compatibility. Xbox’s guidance on previously purchased Xbox 360 content explains continued access. |
| You do not own it | Look for a used Xbox 360 Forza Horizon disc. | The game is listed in the Xbox 360 backward-compatibility catalog. A compatible console installs the game from the disc, and you must keep the disc in the drive to play. Check the disc’s condition and seller’s region/compatibility details before buying; current stock and prices vary. |
| You want to buy it digitally now | There is no established current Microsoft Store purchase route. | Forza Horizon was delisted from the Microsoft Store by June 2023, according to a report reproducing the Forza announcement FAQ. Do not assume a third-party key listing is an official digital purchase. |
Xbox Wire’s backward-compatibility catalog lists Forza Horizon as an Xbox 360 title; that list was last updated March 29, 2018. Xbox’s current backward-compatible games guidance describes installing compatible disc games and accessing eligible digital games.

Which Xbox consoles can play it?
- Xbox 360: The original platform; use an Xbox 360 copy.
- Xbox One: The game is listed as backward compatible. Insert a compatible disc to install it, then leave the disc in the console while playing.
- Xbox Series X: A disc-drive model can use a compatible Xbox 360 disc through backward compatibility. Existing digital owners can check their library.
- Xbox Series S: It cannot use the physical-disc route. Xbox describes Series S as digital-games-only, so you need a digital entitlement already attached to your account.
Xbox’s instructions for disc-based backward-compatible games say to insert the disc; the console downloads the game to its hard drive, and the disc remains necessary as the play license. See Xbox’s backward-compatibility instructions for the current process.
Can you still play it offline?
The single-player portions remain available to owners, according to a Forza announcement FAQ reproduced by Gaming Instincts in 2023. The same FAQ gave August 22, 2023 as the closure date for Forza Horizon’s online services. As a result, do not expect online multiplayer, leaderboards, or other online services to work. The closure information is reported through that secondary source rather than a primary Forza page.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
What changed with the Xbox 360 Store?
Xbox stopped supporting new purchases of Xbox 360 games and DLC through the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace on July 29, 2024. This does not erase prior purchases: Xbox says previously purchased content remains accessible, including compatible games playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The console-store closure is separate from using a physical disc, which remains the practical way to obtain the game if you lack a digital license.
