Yes—if you have a working Xbox 360, the two-disc game and suitable storage, you can install and play Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode. GTA Online on Xbox 360 is no longer available: Rockstar ended service for that version on December 16, 2021. The title’s “in 2023” date is outdated; Rockstar’s installation guidance was last updated April 17, 2024.

What still works on Xbox 360?

Rockstar says the Xbox 360 Story Mode was not affected by the shutdown of online services. GTA Online for Xbox 360 ended on December 16, 2021, along with the listed services for PlayStation 3. The distinction is important: being able to install the game and play its single-player mode does not mean its online mode is still supported. Rockstar’s shutdown FAQ lists the date and confirms Story Mode was not impacted.

What you need to install the Xbox 360 game

The Xbox 360 release comes on two discs. Rockstar’s installation requirements say Disc 1 performs the one-time mandatory installation and Disc 2 is used to play. You need an Xbox 360 hard drive or USB storage with at least 8 GB free.

Storage option Rockstar’s stated requirement
Xbox 360 hard drive At least 8 GB of free space.
USB flash drive External 16 GB USB flash drive with at least 8 GB free; USB 2.0 or higher, minimum 15 MB/s read speed, and formatted for Xbox 360 use.

Rockstar recommends installing only the Install Disc, rather than also installing the Play Disc through the Xbox dashboard, for optimal performance. These are stated requirements, not a guarantee that an aging console, disc or storage device will still work.

  • Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story

How to install and start playing

  1. Confirm the console has an Xbox 360 hard drive with at least 8 GB free, or prepare a USB flash drive that meets Rockstar’s stated requirements and is formatted for Xbox 360.
  2. Insert Disc 1 and complete the one-time installation to the selected storage device.
  3. When installation is complete, use Disc 2 to launch and play the game. Do not install the Play Disc through the dashboard if you want to follow Rockstar’s performance recommendation.

If installation freezes or reports a storage error

Rockstar’s freezing guidance recommends deleting existing GTA V installation data, clearing the Xbox 360 cache, then trying the installation again. To clear the cache, go to System Settings > Storage, select the storage device, and choose the option to clear its cache.

For a “Problem with storage device” error, Rockstar identifies failing storage or a USB drive below the required specifications as possible causes. Its storage-error guidance recommends clearing the device cache, reinstalling the game data, and trying another qualifying USB drive or the console hard drive if enough space is available. If the discs work in another console but not yours, Rockstar says the problem may be with your storage device or console. If the install still freezes after the suggested steps, test another suitable memory device or try the discs in another console.

Will an imported Xbox 360 disc work?

Rockstar says the Xbox 360 version is region-free with one exception: the Japanese release works only on Japanese Xbox consoles. Non-Japanese versions work on Xbox consoles, including Japanese consoles. If buying a used import, check which regional release it is. See Rockstar’s region-locking information.
