Yes—older Pokémon TCG Pocket packs can remain openable after a new expansion launches. They may disappear from the home-screen spotlight, but you can usually reach them by opening the booster-pack area, choosing any visible pack, and tapping “Select other booster packs” in the bottom-right. When Space-Time Smackdown launched, Genetic Apex was still available through that menu even though it no longer appeared on the home screen.

What happens to old packs when a new Pokémon TCG Pocket set arrives?
A new expansion does not automatically delete the packs from earlier expansions. Instead, the game can change which packs are featured on the home screen. The newest release normally receives the prominent placement, while older expansions are moved behind the pack-selection menu.
This distinction explains many reports that a previous set has “disappeared.” A pack leaving the home screen is a navigation change, not proof that its cards or booster packs were removed. Nintendo Life reported this exact situation on January 30, 2025, after Space-Time Smackdown launched: Genetic Apex was no longer featured on the home screen, but it was still available to open. The report described the “Select other booster packs” menu as listing every expansion released at that point.

The practical rule is simple: check the selectable expansion list before assuming an older set is gone. The list is more useful than the home-screen layout because it distinguishes packs that are merely unfeatured from packs that are not currently available.
Genetic Apex after Space-Time Smackdown
Genetic Apex remained openable after Space-Time Smackdown released. To reach it, players selected a visible booster pack and then used the “Select other booster packs” control. This is the clearest documented example of an older expansion continuing to be available after a newer set took over the main screen.
Why the home screen can be misleading
The home screen is a featured shortcut, not a complete archive. It can prioritize a newly released expansion, an event, or another current promotion. If your usual pack is absent there, use the full selection screen instead of relying on the featured tiles.

How to select an older booster pack
Use this path whenever you want to open a pack from an earlier expansion:
- Open Pokémon TCG Pocket and enter the booster-pack area from the home screen.
- Select any booster pack that is currently visible.
- On the pack-selection screen, tap “Select other booster packs” in the bottom-right corner.
- Choose the older expansion from the list of available packs.
- Open the pack normally, provided the expansion is still listed as available.
The wording and placement of the control matter. You do not need to find an old pack on the home screen first; selecting a currently featured pack is the route into the broader list.

If the older expansion appears
If the expansion is listed, it is available through the normal opening flow. You can select its pack artwork, spend the applicable pack-opening resource, and continue opening packs from that expansion. The newest set’s featured position does not change which expansion the selected pack belongs to.
If the older expansion does not appear
Check the game’s current news, event notices, and pack-availability messages. A missing expansion may be limited-time, between availability windows, or unavailable in the current release. Do not treat a missing favorite or a changed home screen as conclusive evidence by itself; the full list and the notices provide the relevant status.
Why did my favorited booster packs disappear?
Pokémon TCG Pocket resets favorited booster packs when a new booster pack is added. The Pokémon TCG Pocket Gameplay FAQ, updated July 30, 2026, states: “When a new booster pack is added to the game, your favorited booster packs are automatically reset.” A separate Pokémon Support article describes the same behavior, saying that previously favorited packs are removed automatically.
This reset affects your saved shortcuts, not necessarily the underlying packs. You may need to open “Select other booster packs,” find the older expansion again, and favorite it if the game allows you to do so. Seeing an empty or changed favorites area after a release is therefore normal and does not establish that the expansion was deleted.
The limited-time exception
The Pokémon Support explanation adds an exception for a limited-time booster pack that is re-added later: that returning pack is exempt from the automatic removal behavior described for newly added packs. In other words, favorites can behave differently for a returning limited-time pack than for a standard new release. Treat the in-game behavior and the pack’s current notice as decisive.

Do old pack points expire?
No. Pack points do not expire. That is the direct answer in the July 30, 2026 Gameplay FAQ.

There is an important restriction, however: pack points are tied to the expansion whose packs earned them. Opening packs from an expansion gives you points for that expansion, and those points “can be exchanged only for cards that appear in that expansion.” Points earned from Genetic Apex packs are therefore not a general currency for cards in a later expansion.
What this means when you change sets
- Points already earned remain available; they do not vanish merely because a newer expansion launches.
- Changing the selected booster pack does not convert points from one expansion into points for another.
- Use the points with the expansion that generated them, subject to that expansion’s current card-exchange availability.
- If you are chasing a particular older card, keeping track of the expansion code or name attached to your points prevents spending time in the wrong exchange list.
Pack points and pack availability are separate systems. An expansion can be absent from the current selectable list while its previously earned points do not expire, but the exact exchange options still depend on the game’s current rules and availability notices.
Older packs versus the newest pack: what should you choose?
The right choice depends on whether you are collecting a specific card, building a new deck, or simply using the pack-opening resources available to you. Compare the options using the same four questions.

Choose an older pack when you have a defined target
If a missing card is exclusive to an earlier expansion, opening the newest pack cannot substitute for opening the set that contains it. Use the older expansion’s listing and its associated point exchange rather than assuming newer cards will cover the same pool.

Choose the newest pack for current-release cards
If your goal is the newest expansion’s cards, the featured pack is the straightforward option. Its pack points belong to that expansion, so they will not help you redeem cards from an earlier set.

No blanket promise covers every pack. The documented behavior shows that older packs can remain openable, but availability is pack-specific. Limited-time packs may be removed, later re-added, or governed by a distinct event schedule.
The Pokémon Company’s Ruler of the Skies announcement illustrates this separate treatment: it said Deluxe Pack: ex booster packs would be returning. A return announcement means players should not assume a special pack follows the same continuous-availability pattern as a standard expansion.
Permanent expansion availability
When a standard expansion continues to appear in the “Select other booster packs” list, you can select it even after another set becomes the featured release. Its position may change, but its presence in the list is the useful signal.

Limited-time or returning packs
A limited-time pack can leave the list when its window ends. If it returns, the game may announce the return separately, and its favorite behavior can differ from that of a newly added pack. Check notices rather than relying on an old screenshot, guide, or previous schedule.

Troubleshooting an older pack that seems missing
1. You only checked the home screen
Open a visible booster pack and tap “Select other booster packs.” The home screen does not necessarily show every expansion.
2. Your favorites were reset
A new booster-pack release automatically resets favorited packs. Search the full list and set your preferred older pack again if it is available.
3. The expansion is absent from the list
Read the current in-game news and availability notices. The pack may be limited-time, between windows, or temporarily unavailable. There is no general rule that every historical pack must remain selectable.

Confirm that the points and exchange screen correspond to the expansion whose packs you opened. Points do not expire, but they are expansion-specific and cannot be exchanged for cards from another set.
5. A special pack has a different schedule
Look for a dedicated announcement for the pack. Deluxe Pack: ex, for example, has been described as returning, which signals a different availability pattern from simply remaining in the standard list.
What the July 30, 2026 FAQ confirms—and what it does not
The official Gameplay FAQ updated July 30, 2026 confirms two rules directly: favorited booster packs are automatically reset when a new booster pack is added, and pack points do not expire. It also defines the expansion restriction on those points.
Those statements do not guarantee that every old booster pack remains permanently openable. They explain favorites and points; current pack availability still depends on the expansion’s listing and any limited-time notices. For that reason, the safest workflow is to check the selection menu each time an expansion changes and to read the associated notice for special packs.
