Sometimes—but a developer closing does not decide the answer by itself. A game usually remains playable if its core mode runs locally and it can launch without the company’s authentication or servers. An always-online game can lose some features or become completely unplayable when required servers, account checks, matchmaking, cloud saves, or remote simulation disappear. A retained library entry, installed files, or physical disc is not a guarantee that the game will still start.
What happens when a game developer closes?
“The developer closed” can describe several different events: a studio may stop development while its publisher keeps the game online; a publisher may retire the service; a platform may delist the product; or every company responsible for authentication and servers may disappear. Those events have different effects.

The key question is not who owns the source code. It is whether your copy depends on services that somebody still operates. A fully offline single-player game can continue for years after its studio shuts down. A multiplayer game that uses company-hosted matchmaking may lose online play but keep local modes. A game whose world simulation, authentication, or progression runs on remote servers can stop launching altogether.

- Mostly unaffected: Offline campaigns, local multiplayer, and locally stored saves continue. Online features may be removed.
- Partly playable: The game launches, but matchmaking, cloud saves, events, rankings, news, achievements, or server-backed progression no longer work.
- Unplayable: The title requires an online login, periodic authentication, a remote simulation, or a live service that has been shut down.
There is no reliable general percentage or lifespan for games that survive a closure. The result depends on the specific title’s design, contracts, platform, and technical dependencies.

What you retain when you bought the game
A digital purchase normally gives you licensed access under the platform and publisher’s terms, not ownership of the publisher’s intellectual property or a promise of permanent service. You may retain an account record, an installed copy, or a disc while losing access to a required service.
Valve’s Steamworks retirement guidance says, “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries.” That means delisting generally affects new sales, while an existing account can still show the title. It does not guarantee that the executable will launch, that a launcher will authenticate, or that the game’s servers will answer. Steam-library retention and technical playability are separate questions.
A physical disc proves that you possess the media, but it may contain only an early build. A later patch, account check, online activation, or server-hosted game world can still be required. Conversely, if the disc contains a complete offline build, it may remain useful even after the developer closes.
License, files, and support are different rights
- License: The permission granted by the platform or publisher to use the software under stated terms.
- Files: The executable, data, patches, saves, and configuration stored on a device or downloaded again.
- Support: Maintenance, customer service, account recovery, servers, matchmaking, events, statistics, and updates.
Keeping one of these does not automatically preserve the others. Ubisoft’s EULA, for example, states that the product and intellectual-property rights belong to Ubisoft or its licensors and warns that an internet connection, a Ubisoft account, and the Ubisoft Connect client may be required for online services and features. The exact requirements differ by title, edition, platform, and region.

What a server shutdown removes
Server retirement is often selective rather than instantaneous. An official decommissioning notice may list several services with different end dates or effects.

Ubisoft’s decommissioning notice says, “Please note that the offline features of the games are unaffected and remain available to you.” It also describes online multiplayer, in-game news, player statistics, and some challenge-related rewards as services that may be shut down or retired. Electronic Arts uses similar language in its service updates, stating that when online services are no longer available or supported, “the game may still be played and enjoyed offline.” These are general descriptions, not guarantees for every game in either catalog.
A 2026 European Commission analysis explains why the risk is increasing: modern games increasingly rely on company-run servers. It distinguishes servers used for optional multiplayer or live events from always-online checks used for authentication or digital rights management. The more of the core loop that runs remotely, the more a shutdown can remove.

Use this check before buying a delisted title, before changing platforms, and as soon as a service-closure notice appears.

- Find the official service notice. Look for the publisher’s service-status, decommissioning, or end-of-service announcement. Record which platform, region, edition, and date it covers.
- Test the advertised offline mode. Disconnect the device from the internet after a normal sign-in and start the game. Check whether the campaign, tutorials, saved games, and settings work without a connection.
- List launch requirements. Note the platform account, publisher account, launcher, activation step, DRM, periodic check, or internet requirement shown on the store page, manual, or support page.
- Trace where progress lives. Determine whether saves, inventories, unlocks, characters, missions, and the simulation itself are stored on the device or on company servers.
- Check multiplayer alternatives. Look for split-screen, LAN, direct connection, official dedicated-server tools, or a permitted self-hosted mode. Do not assume that a community workaround is authorized or secure.
- Confirm reinstall access. Check whether the platform keeps the title in your account and whether you can download the needed installer and patches. A library listing does not prove that activation will work.
- Preserve what the rules allow. Keep installers, patches, saves, and configuration files when the platform’s terms and local law permit it. Do not bypass DRM or authentication unlawfully.
Questions to answer from the game’s documentation
- Does the game launch in a genuinely offline state, or only after an online sign-in?
- Does it require internet access every launch, periodically, or only for optional features?
- Can a local save be created and loaded without cloud access?
- Are characters, inventories, currencies, maps, or mission results validated by a server?
- Can another player join through local networking or a server you control?
- Will the original launcher remain available, and can it operate without its account service?
What “support ended” actually means
Support is a bundle of services, and each part can end at a different time. A notice saying “support ended” may mean no new patches while servers continue running. It may mean customer-service agents no longer handle account recovery. It may refer only to a console generation, a region, or a particular online feature.

Read the complete end-of-service notice rather than relying on a store label or a social-media post. It should identify the affected features and dates. If it does not, treat the status of each dependency as unconfirmed.
Can you reinstall a delisted game?
Often, an existing digital entitlement remains visible in the platform account after sales stop. Steam’s stated policy for retired games is that they remain in players’ libraries. That helps with discovery and, where the platform still hosts the files, may allow a reinstall.

Reinstallation can still fail for several reasons:
- The platform no longer distributes the installer or a required patch.
- The publisher launcher or account service has been retired.
- The game requires online activation that no longer responds.
- A platform migration removed compatibility with the old build.
- The title’s core simulation or saves were always server-side.
Before uninstalling a delisted game, verify that you can download it again and that its offline mode launches. Keep lawful backups of installers and saves where permitted, but understand that a backup cannot recreate a missing authentication or game-world server.

What changes on consoles and physical editions?
Console storefronts can stop new sales while previously acquired downloads remain in an account. The duration and conditions are platform-specific, so check the console maker’s current policy for your account and region. A disc may let you install an older build, but online activation, patches, or server-side content can still be mandatory.
Physical ownership is therefore strongest for games with a complete, unprotected offline mode. It is weakest for titles that use the disc only as a license token while the actual game, progression, or simulation runs remotely.

There is no single worldwide rule that guarantees permanent playability or an automatic refund when a game becomes unusable. The relevant facts include your country, the seller, the contract, the advertised features, the timing of the shutdown, and whether the failure is a defect or a disclosed service termination.

A European Parliament response concerning EU Directive 2019/770 says the directive does not impose one universal duration for supplying online games. Where digital content fails to conform, possible remedies can include bringing it into conformity, a proportionate price reduction, or termination of the contract, depending on the circumstances. Those remedies are not an automatic worldwide refund rule, and national implementation matters.

Keep the receipt, store listing, service notice, and any statement about offline functionality. Contact the seller first and describe the specific lost function. If the issue concerns a consumer guarantee or digital-content conformity, consult your country’s consumer-protection authority or a qualified adviser rather than assuming that another jurisdiction’s remedy applies.
How to compare two games for shutdown risk
If long-term access matters, compare games before buying them using the same questions rather than relying on a “single-player” label.

Troubleshooting after an announced closure
The game will not launch offline
- Start the platform and publisher launcher once while connected, then sign in to the account that owns the entitlement.
- Look for an official offline-mode setting or authorization step; do not delete the launcher before checking its instructions.
- Read the closure notice for authentication end dates and affected editions.
- Test an older, known-good installation only if the platform permits it and the files are obtained lawfully.
The campaign launches but progress is missing
Check whether the save was cloud-only, tied to a server profile, or stored in a local save directory. If local saves still exist, back them up before changing settings. Server-side characters, inventories, currencies, and achievements cannot be reconstructed from a local executable alone.

Confirm whether the official server has closed rather than treating a temporary outage as permanent. If the service is retired, use only documented local, LAN, direct-connect, or self-hosted options. A replacement server may require a separate client or permission and may carry security and account risks.
The practical answer for your library
For each important game, make a small dependency record: offline modes, launch accounts, DRM or periodic checks, save location, multiplayer method, server-side systems, reinstall path, and the publisher’s stated retirement policy. Test the offline path before a closure, keep lawful backups, and avoid assuming that a purchase, disc, or library icon guarantees future access.
The decisive distinction is simple: if the software can authenticate and run its core loop locally, a developer’s closure may remove online extras while leaving a playable game. If the core loop depends on a server that no longer exists, ownership of the files cannot substitute for that service.
