Generally, yes—but it is not guaranteed in every situation. If an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc was successfully used to claim the digital entitlement and the game is installed, it follows Xbox’s normal digital-game access rules. Microsoft still conditions that entitlement on keeping the qualifying disc, may require eligibility revalidation, and can suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it.
What “converting” an Xbox disc means
Converting is a claim process, not an automatic upgrade for every physical game. Xbox says players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. The feature began with “thousands of titles,” but Xbox did not say every title was eligible. Xbox Wire’s announcement describes the claim process; Microsoft’s Digital Goods Usage Rules set out the resulting license conditions.
What that means for offline play
Microsoft says access to and installation of a successfully claimed game follow the usual Xbox One and Xbox Series digital-game basis, subject to the disc-to-digital limitations. That supports a qualified “generally yes” for offline play after the entitlement is claimed and the game is installed. The published rules do not explicitly guarantee that every title will launch offline in every console, account, or license state.
If the console asks to revalidate eligibility while offline, the official rules do not specify exactly what will happen in every case. They also do not establish the precise offline procedure for using the entitlement on a different console. Do not treat a successful claim as a promise that offline access will never depend on another license check.

Keep the qualifying disc
The digital entitlement is not a way to sell or give away the game disc while keeping an unconditional digital copy. Microsoft says the license is conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc, cannot be transferred separately from it, and may be revalidated. Access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess that disc.
Check which Xbox and game you have
Xbox One and Xbox Series X
These are the disc-reading consoles Xbox identifies for claiming a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc. Eligibility is specific to the game and can change: Microsoft says some discs are ineligible for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons, and titles can be added to or removed from eligibility. Confirm the exact game is eligible before relying on the claim.

Xbox Series S
Series S is digital-only and cannot read the physical disc needed for the claim. Xbox’s backward-compatibility page confirms that Series S does not play physical discs.
Backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs
Do not assume the newer disc-to-digital entitlement applies to older-generation discs. The cited program rules describe Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. Xbox’s compatibility FAQ says that after a backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox game downloads, the disc still needs to be in the drive to play.

Quick check for your situation
- Identify the disc: Is it a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc, rather than an older backward-compatible disc?
- Confirm the claim: Did you successfully claim its digital entitlement, and is the game installed?
- Check the console: The claim requires a disc-reading supported console; Series S cannot perform it.
- Keep the disc: Retain the qualifying disc in your possession in case eligibility must be revalidated.
- Set expectations: The rules support normal digital-game access, but do not promise offline launch in every license or console state.
