The French horror film linked to John Carpenter’s Halloween is Georges Franju’s Eyes Without a Face (Les yeux sans visage), released in 1960. The British Film Institute describes it as a major influence on Carpenter. That supports a broad connection between the films, but does not establish that Franju’s film was the direct source of Michael Myers’s mask.
What is Eyes Without a Face about?
In Franju’s black-and-white film, surgeon Dr. Génessier tries to restore the face of his daughter Christiane, who was disfigured in a car accident. With help from his assistant Louise, he abducts young women in pursuit of that goal. Christiane’s concealed face and damaged sense of identity give the story its haunting central image.
The film adapts a novel by Jean Redon. Criterion lists a 90-minute runtime and a 1.66:1 aspect ratio, and credits Pierre Boileau, Thomas Narcejac, Jean Redon and Claude Sautet with the screenplay adaptation, with music by Maurice Jarre. Criterion’s film page provides its credits and film details.
How is the film connected to Halloween?
The connection is documented at the level of influence: the BFI calls Eyes Without a Face a cult horror classic and says it has been a major influence on filmmakers including John Carpenter. The film’s masked, obscured face also makes the comparison with the blank pale mask associated with Michael Myers easy to understand.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
But those points are not proof of a one-to-one design source. The available BFI account does not say that Carpenter specifically took Michael Myers’s mask from Franju’s film, and no direct Carpenter statement making that attribution is established here. It is more accurate to say that Eyes Without a Face influenced Carpenter than to claim it definitively inspired the mask. See the BFI Player film page and BFI’s discussion of the film.
Why does the film remain distinctive?
Eyes Without a Face combines surgical horror with controlled, often lyrical filmmaking. The BFI highlights cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan’s images and Jarre’s waltz score, as well as Franju’s expressionist mood and poetic grace. The result is more than a sequence of shocks: measured composition and an eerie tone sit alongside the disturbing medical premise.

The BFI also places Franju’s sensibility in conversation with silent cinema and the fantastique serials of Louis Feuillade. Its critic Adam Scovell reads the film’s bleak settings and concealment through themes of identity, guilt, obsession and postwar French trauma; that is an interpretation of the film, rather than a settled account of its production. Criterion describes it as a major influence on horror cinema more broadly.

Film pages and editions do not all present the same year and runtime metadata. Criterion lists the film as 1960 and 90 minutes; BFI pages list 1959, with 90 minutes on the Player and 88 minutes on its 4K product page. These are differing catalogue details for the same film, not evidence of separate versions. For a straightforward reference, Criterion’s film information and the programme notes crediting France and Italy in 1960 are useful starting points.
