Its manual describes playing over the Internet, and it is a separate Steam edition from Borderlands GOTY Enhanced. That confirms the feature exists; it does not guarantee that matchmaking or every connection works reliably today.
What “GOTY (No Enhanced)” means on PC
On Steam, the original Borderlands Game of the Year is app 8980, while Borderlands GOTY Enhanced is a separate app, 729040. The original PC manual documents multiplayer over the Internet, so online play is not exclusive to Enhanced. Read the original PC manual; Steam lists GOTY Enhanced separately.
Does online play work reliably today?
The documented feature and its current reliability are different questions. Official sources establish that the original PC game has online multiplayer, but they do not certify that its connections or matchmaking are consistently working for every player today. Success may depend on the particular platform, region, and network. The Steam Community hub shows user activity, but activity there is not authoritative service-status confirmation.
What to try if you cannot connect
Gearbox’s general network troubleshooting guide, published April 14, 2025 and updated September 17, 2025, is a reasonable starting point for connection checks. It applies general troubleshooting across the series; it does not promise that a specific original-PC session will connect. If problems persist, the guide recommends trying a direct connection to the modem.

How the console editions differ
Console store pages describe online co-op for their respective versions, but they do not establish the current connection status of the original PC game or prove PC cross-play.
