What the final boss actually ends
The final-boss sequence takes place on Island 5, the Volcano. It is the conclusion of the campaign’s story route, not a declaration that every objective in the game has been completed. The distinction matters because the game separates leaving the story area from finishing optional collections and reward challenges.

Beating the Mutated Bowhead Whale is a major combat milestone, but it is not the precise moment that starts the credits. The ending requires several actions after that fight, and skipping one of them can make it seem as though the game has failed to recognize the finale.
The complete ending route
- Buy the Fish Bucket. This is required for the sequence on Island 5.
- Summon and defeat the Bowhead Whale. This begins the chain that leads to the final encounter.
- Throw the whale’s body into the Volcano. The body is used to trigger the next stage.
- Defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale. This is the final boss battle itself.
- Collect the Whale Fin. The fin is the item needed to complete the escape objective.
- Give the Whale Fin to the scientist at the camp. Defeating the boss alone does not complete the story.
- Take the RHIB keys. They become available as part of the scientist’s handoff.
- Use the RHIB to leave for the mainland. Leaving the island is what advances the game into the ending and credits.
The “We are so back” achievement is awarded when the credits roll. That achievement confirms that the main-story ending has been reached, but it should not be treated as a 100-percent-completion marker.

Story completion and 100-percent completion are different
There are two separate questions behind “Did I finish the game?” The first is whether you completed the campaign. In How to Fish, that happens when you finish the Island 5 sequence, hand over the Whale Fin, obtain the RHIB keys, and use the RHIB to leave for the mainland. The second is whether every available objective is complete. The ending does not automatically answer that second question.

In practical terms, the credits close the narrative arc while the save remains useful for cleanup. A completion percentage, checklist, or trophy list may therefore still show unfinished work even after the final story achievement appears.
What happens after the credits
After the credits, a crash sequence returns the character to the starting island. This presentation can look like a reset, especially because the game places you back where the adventure began. It is not a full restart of the campaign.
Your existing equipment and progression are retained. You do not have to replay the Island 5 route simply because the post-credits scene returns you to the starting island. The retained state is what makes post-game cleanup possible: the tools and progress earned during the story remain available for unfinished collection and achievement work.

What the crash does not mean
- It does not erase your equipment.
- It does not remove your story progression.
- It does not force you to begin the campaign from the beginning.
- It does not make the credits a permanent lockout point for the remaining named objectives.
The crash is therefore best understood as the game’s post-credits return point, not as a New Game reset or a separate blank save.
Which goals you can finish after the ending
Missing fish
Any fish you have not yet caught can still be pursued after the story ending. If your collection is incomplete when the credits roll, use the post-credits save as a continuation point rather than restarting the campaign. The ending does not convert an incomplete fish collection into a permanently missed one.
This is especially useful if you focused on the objectives required to reach Island 5 and left collection work for later. The story ending and the collection checklist are independent milestones, so reaching the mainland does not substitute for catching species you have not logged.

Achievements and trophies
Remaining achievements or trophies can also be completed after the final boss. The “We are so back” achievement belongs to the ending sequence; it confirms that you reached the credits, while other awards may require activities you have not performed yet.

Check your platform’s achievement or trophy list after returning to the starting island. Separate the award for reaching the ending from awards tied to fish collection or other objectives. The presence of the ending achievement is not evidence that every other award has been granted.
Other completion objectives
The game’s post-story state is intended for unfinished work beyond the explicitly named fish and achievement or trophy categories. If an objective was not completed during the campaign and remains available in the world, the retained save lets you continue working toward it without replaying the whole story.
Because no published completion breakdown is available, there is no reliable percentage that tells you how much of a typical player’s checklist remains after the credits. Your own collection, achievement, and trophy lists are the authoritative way to identify the unfinished items in your save.

Before leaving Island 5
- Confirm that you have the Fish Bucket and have completed the Bowhead Whale portion of the sequence.
- Defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale and collect the Whale Fin.
- Deliver the fin to the scientist at the camp.
- Take the RHIB keys when they are provided.
- Use the RHIB to leave for the mainland and allow the credits to play.
Do not stop after the boss fight and assume the ending has triggered. The scientist interaction and the RHIB departure are required parts of the story conclusion.
After the post-credits return
- Let the crash sequence finish and confirm that you are back on the starting island.
- Check which fish are still missing from your collection.
- Review your achievements and trophies for awards other than the ending achievement.
- Work through the remaining objectives one category at a time.
- Verify each objective on its relevant collection or platform list rather than using the credits as a completion test.
This approach keeps the irreversible-looking story moment separate from the repeatable cleanup period. It also gives you a clear diagnostic: if equipment and progression are present after the crash, you are in the intended post-game state.

“I beat the final boss, so why didn’t the credits start?”
The Mutated Bowhead Whale is the final boss, but the credits require the rest of the escape route. Collect the Whale Fin, return to the scientist at the camp, receive the RHIB keys, and use the RHIB to leave the island. The boss victory by itself is not the final trigger.
“The crash sent me to the first island, so did I lose everything?”
No. The return to the starting island is part of the post-credits state. Check your equipment and progression; they should remain available. If they are present, you have not been reset to a new campaign.

“The ending achievement popped, so am I at 100 percent?”
No. “We are so back” marks the credits and the end of the main story. Fish collections, other achievements or trophies, and additional objectives can still be incomplete.
“Should I postpone the ending until every fish is caught?”
You do not need to delay the story solely to protect access to unfinished fish or achievement work. The post-credits save is designed to retain your equipment and progression, allowing cleanup afterward. You may still choose to finish optional goals first for organizational reasons, but the ending itself is not described as a lockout.
Is there a New Game+ mode?
No New Game+ mode was reported at launch. That means the reliable post-story option is continuation from the retained save, not a special replay mode that carries progress into a fresh campaign.

- The Island 5 Volcano sequence is complete.
- The Mutated Bowhead Whale is defeated.

- The RHIB is used to leave for the mainland.
- The credits have rolled and the “We are so back” achievement has been awarded.
- The post-credits return has preserved your equipment and progression.
- No fish remain uncollected.
- No desired achievements or trophies remain incomplete.
- Any other available completion objectives have been checked off.
Use the credits as the finish line for the story, not as the finish line for the entire game. In How to Fish, 100-percent completion remains achievable after the final boss because the post-credits save preserves the progress you need for cleanup.
