Yes, you can stream a study-with-me video on YouTube Live using an encoder, but YouTube does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. There is an important trade-off: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all, and DVR pause-and-rewind may be limited or unavailable. If you want reliable replays, plan shorter sessions and keep a local recording.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- You must be at least 16 years old to live stream.
- An encoder that sends video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. This can be a computer-based setup; a dedicated USB webcam is optional, not a requirement.
- Rights to all footage, music, and other audio or visual material in the stream.
YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains the eligibility requirements and encoder workflow.
How to set up a study-with-me livestream
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Choose the encoder-based livestream setup and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter both in your encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Choose your video and output settings. Set resolution and frame rate to match the source and the upload bandwidth available to you. There is no one bitrate that suits every static study scene; YouTube advises allowing enough outbound bandwidth for the chosen bitrate, with headroom.
- Test and preview before relying on a long session. Check the stream preview and health, and confirm that the picture and audio are correct. YouTube warns that connectivity disruptions can break an encoder stream.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Keep an eye on stream health rather than assuming that a broadcast will remain live unattended indefinitely.
For YouTube’s detailed encoder instructions and current technical recommendations, see encoder livestreaming tips and how to create a livestream with an encoder.
One 24-hour stream or shorter sessions?
| Approach | Practical benefit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| One stream longer than 12 hours | Fewer planned restarts and a more continuous live presence. | YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. DVR may also be limited or unavailable. |
| Shorter recurring sessions | More cautious choice if preserving YouTube replays and viewer rewind matters. | Requires deliberate restarts; it is not a single continuous broadcast. |
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but that is not a guarantee that every stream will be saved. If the recording matters, keep a local copy. YouTube’s archive guidance describes the 12-hour caveat; its DVR guidance explains the rewind limitation. Choosing shorter sessions is a cautious workflow based on those limits, not a YouTube requirement.

Copyright and live-stream rules
Use only material for which you have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if protected material remains. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: a rights holder may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s terms and live-stream copyright guidance.
Monetization is a separate question
Permission to go live does not mean a stream will qualify for monetization. YouTube Partner Program policies apply to live streams and assess originality and authenticity. A minimally varied loop, especially one repeated across a channel without distinct educational or creative value, can present a monetization risk. Eligibility is assessed case by case; see YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
