Can You Synchro Summon on Your Opponent’s Turn?

A Synchro Summon is usually an open-state action, but certain Quick Effects let you perform one during your opponent’s turn.

Yes—but only when a card or effect allows you to Synchro Summon at that time. A regular Synchro Summon is normally an open-state action during your Main Phase; a Quick Effect can instead create an opponent-turn opportunity, often by instructing you to Synchro Summon after that effect resolves.

Why a regular Synchro Summon is different

In the ordinary procedure, you Synchro Summon during your Main Phase when the game is in an open state. You send a face-up Tuner and the required other face-up monsters you control to the Graveyard, with their Levels totaling the Level of the Synchro Monster you want to Summon. The official Yu-Gi-Oh! rulebook describes this procedure, while Konami’s Fast Effect Timing guide lists a Synchro Summon that does not start a Chain as an action normally taken in an open game state.

How an effect lets you Synchro Summon on the opponent’s turn

Monster Quick Effects are fast effects. When their conditions are met, either player can activate fast effects during the opponent’s turn, as the Fast Effect Timing guide explains. If a Quick Effect tells you to Synchro Summon after it resolves, you perform that summon at the time specified by the effect.

The effect and the summon are distinct: the effect activates and resolves first; then you carry out the Synchro Summon it permits. You are not taking the ordinary open-state action during your opponent’s turn—the card effect authorizes the timing.

Check the exact effect before attempting it

These cards are examples, not a general permission for every Tuner or Synchro Monster. Before attempting an opponent-turn Synchro Summon, check the effect’s specific conditions:

  • Timing: Does it allow the summon during the opponent’s turn, and does it specify a phase such as the Main Phase?
  • Use limit: Is the effect once per Chain, once per turn, or subject to another restriction?
  • Materials: Does the effect require you to use the monster with the effect, or specify particular materials?
  • Legal summon: Do you control the required materials and have a Synchro Monster you can legally Summon under the effect and any other applicable restrictions?

Follow the wording and restrictions of the specific effect. The examples above establish what those cards permit; they do not determine every possible card interaction.
