Its general rules require items to be in good working condition and leave acceptance and final value to the store after inspection. A drifting stick is a functional issue, so it could affect eligibility or the offer; ask your local store before making a trip or paying for a repair.
Can I trade in a Switch with stick drift?
GameStop’s public trade terms say product condition and trade value are determined by the company “in our sole discretion.” Its condition guidance says the final value—and whether an item is accepted at all—is decided in store after inspection. Those pages do not name Joy-Con stick drift as an automatic rejection reason, so it would be inaccurate to treat the headline claim as a confirmed nationwide rule.

That does not mean a drifting Joy-Con will be accepted. GameStop requires items to be in good working condition, and a stick that registers movement incorrectly may affect the inspection, eligibility, or value. The store’s decision on your specific console is controlling. GameStop’s trade program is available only for select products at select stores in the United States and Guam. Read GameStop’s trade terms and condition guidance.
What to bring, and what missing parts can mean
For a console trade, GameStop says to bring the original controller and the cords or chargers needed to use the item, including the power cable and HDMI cable. Missing components can lower the value, and missing critical components may result in the trade being declined. Original packaging and printed manuals are not required. A replacement Joy-Con might provide a working controller, but GameStop’s guidance does not say that using one guarantees acceptance or full value; check with the store before buying one. See GameStop’s console component guidance.

- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
Should I troubleshoot or repair drift first?
Nintendo recommends checking whether the Joy-Con registers correctly, updating the console and controller, removing any covers, calibrating the stick, and checking whether the problem occurs only in a particular game or setting, such as tilt controls. If the stick remains incorrectly responsive or cannot be calibrated, Nintendo says the affected Joy-Con needs service and cautions: “Do not send in the console.” Its online service-request process is available in the United States and Canada. Nintendo’s guidance does not promise a free repair, approval, or turnaround time. Follow Nintendo’s Joy-Con troubleshooting and service steps.
Decide between inspection and service based on your priority: GameStop can inspect the console and determine its offer, while Nintendo’s recommendation for an unresolved fault is service for the affected Joy-Con. If you are considering a replacement controller instead, verify compatibility with your exact Switch model and ask GameStop whether it would affect the trade before spending money.

Trade values change and depend on the item and its condition. For example, a GameStop summary generated October 2, 2026 listed up to $60 in store credit or $42 cash for a particular Switch console listing; that offer expired at the end of that business day. It is an expired example, not a current quote or an estimate for a drift-affected console. Check GameStop for a current quote, then allow for the in-store inspection to determine the final outcome.
