Whether an item qualifies, and what you receive, depends on Australian compatibility, condition, completeness, account and network status, your state’s identification rules, and an in-store inspection. The online calculator is only an estimate; the store’s assessed offer is final.
What you can trade at EB Games Australia
EB Games’ current Trade & Save guide covers modern, previous-generation and retro hardware and software. Its accepted-format list includes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Category | Formats listed by EB Games |
|---|---|
| Current and recent systems | Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One and Nintendo 3DS |
| PlayStation and Xbox retro | PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP, PS Vita, original Xbox and Xbox 360 |
| Nintendo retro | NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Game Boy, Wii, Wii U and DS |
| Sega retro | Sega Master System and Mega Drive |
| Other items | Consoles, games and accessories, subject to inspection and the relevant eligibility rules |
That list means the format is eligible to be considered, not that every individual item will be accepted. EB Games describes the service as a way to trade consoles, games and accessories you no longer want and put the value toward something else in store.
Game eligibility: the checks that matter
Australian release and language
A game should carry an Australian classification, work with Australian systems and contain English content. An imported disc or cartridge can therefore be refused even when the console itself can technically run it. Check the package, classification marking and regional compatibility before travelling to a store.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch

- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Condition and missing packaging
Scratches or a missing original case, cover/display insert or correct rating may not automatically disqualify a game. EB Games can still accept such a title, but a refurbishment charge may reduce the advertised promotion or the trade value. Retro games need their case or box, so a loose vintage cartridge does not meet that specific requirement.
Copies that cannot be traded
- Illegal, burnt or pirated copies are not eligible.
- Demo and promotional copies cannot be traded.
- Cracked or chipped media, internally incomplete items, modified products and items damaged beyond repair may be refused.
Staff make the final decision after examining the actual disc, cartridge, label, case and inserts. A clean-looking listing or an online estimate cannot override an inspection finding.
Console eligibility and account requirements
Hardware condition and completeness
For a normal console trade, EB Games expects an Australian model that works, is complete and has not been modified. “Complete” generally means bringing the components needed to test and resell the unit, such as the original power supply, required cables, controller or controllers, dock where applicable, and matching accessories. Missing pieces can lower the offer or lead to rejection.

EB Games says it may consider a console that is not working, incomplete or not resalable, but acceptance and the amount are discretionary after inspection. Do not assume a non-working system has a guaranteed minimum value.
Network bans and parental controls
The console must not be banned or locked from its online network. Remove parental controls and any other account restrictions before you trade. A network-banned or account-locked console may be refused because a subsequent owner cannot use it normally.
Remove accounts and protect your data
Back up saves, screenshots and other content, then sign out and factory-reset the hardware. Remove payment details and unlink the console from online services. EB Games states that stored content has no commercial value and that ownership of stored material is forfeited when a console or memory device is traded. Treat the handover as permanent: staff cannot recover your data for you after the transaction.
How EB Games sets your trade value
There is no permanent public price list covering every game, console model, storage size and accessory. EB Games’ Trade & Save estimator produces an online guide, while the final offer is set in store after staff assess condition, completeness and resalability.
The estimate is not a guaranteed payout
Online estimates assume resalable condition, are not guaranteed and can change on the next calendar day. A quote can therefore move even when you bring the same item to the same shop. Use the result to decide whether a trip is worthwhile, not as a promise of payment.

EB World membership affects displayed values
Trade values vary with EB World membership level. The terms say online quotes are shown at the “up to” value for EB World Level IV members; signing in gives a more individual estimate. Record which account and membership level produced the number so you can interpret it correctly at the counter.
Getting the current estimate
- Open EB Games Australia’s Trade & Save tool and search for the exact game, console model, storage capacity or accessory.
- Select the matching edition and condition options rather than a similar-looking product.
- Sign in to your EB World account if you have one, because the displayed estimate can differ by membership level.
- Save a screenshot or print the result, including the date and item description.
- Take the item and every relevant component to a store for assessment. The associate’s inspected offer supersedes the online figure.
EB Games’ support team does not provide trade values directly; it directs customers to the estimator or a local store.
Prepare your trade before visiting
Preparation cannot create value that the market does not support, but it can prevent avoidable deductions and a wasted journey.

- Clean safely. Wipe dust and fingerprints from the exterior and media with appropriate materials. Do not use liquids inside a console or attempt repairs that could count as modification.
- Gather the complete set. Bring the original power supply, cables, controller, dock, battery cover, case, box and inserts that belong with the item.
- Check operation. Charge controllers, confirm the console starts, test disc or cartridge reading and make sure ports and drives function.
- Remove digital access barriers. Sign out, disable parental controls, remove console locks and confirm the system is not network-banned.
- Back up and erase personal data. Transfer saves and photos, remove payment information and perform the manufacturer’s factory reset.
- Bring identification. Take the documents required in your state and ensure the name and address details can be verified.
- Bring the estimate. A dated screenshot helps staff identify the item you selected, but it does not bind the store to that amount.
Age, identification and privacy rules
Minimum trading ages differ by Australian jurisdiction. These are EB Games’ published minimums:
| State or territory | Minimum age | Published qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Queensland | 17 | — |
| New South Wales | 16 | — |
| Victoria | 18 | — |
| Western Australia | 16 | Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a consenting adult |
| Tasmania | 18 | — |
| South Australia | 16 | — |
| Northern Territory | 18 | — |
| Australian Capital Territory | 18 | — |
Identification documents also vary by jurisdiction. Depending on where you trade, accepted evidence can include a driver licence, passport, Australian government photo identification, tertiary student ID, or a specified combination of non-photo documents and proof of address. Check the state-specific requirements before visiting; a document accepted in one state may not satisfy another state’s rule.
EB Games’ privacy policy says staff must witness a government-issued photo ID for a trade and record details such as your name, address and ID reference number. Bring the original document, not just a photograph on your phone, unless your state’s published rules expressly allow an alternative.
What you receive: credit, cash and state differences
A store associate assesses the item, tells you the store-credit amount and allows you to use that credit in store. Payment options can vary by state and transaction, so ask the store which form applies before accepting the offer.
Western Australia has a specific restriction: EB Games says trading for cash is not permitted there, and credit cannot be provided via gift card. Do not assume that a procedure available in another state applies in Western Australia. If receiving money rather than store credit is essential, verify the local rule first and compare it with a private sale.

Quantity limits and unusual trades
EB Games limits multiple copies of the same or similar product to two per customer when the trade is for a personal collection. Larger or unusual quantities may require documentation, and the retailer can refuse the trade. This matters if you are clearing an estate, selling a business inventory, or bringing several copies of one title: call the store before transporting everything and be ready to explain ownership.
Best-trade-price matching
EB Games’ best-trade-price match is narrow rather than a general promise to beat every online listing. The competing store must be in the same shopping centre or precinct, and the product and condition must match. Online retailers and private traders do not qualify. A price match also cannot be stacked with EB trade promotions.
When requesting a match, bring evidence of the competing store’s current offer and make sure the model, edition, accessories and condition are identical. A higher price for a different bundle is not a like-for-like comparison.

Trade-in versus selling privately
EB Games offers convenience and an immediate store assessment, but the final credit reflects its condition and resale requirements. A private sale can produce a different amount and payment method, yet it requires you to create a listing, answer questions, arrange payment and manage the risk of no-shows or disputes.
| Decision factor | EB Games trade | Private sale |
|---|---|---|
| Speed and effort | One store visit and an on-the-spot assessment | Listing, messages, negotiation and handover |
| Price certainty | Estimator is only a guide; inspection determines the offer | Agreed price can be higher or lower, but depends on finding a buyer |
| Condition risk | Deductions or refusal can occur at inspection | You describe the condition; buyer may negotiate after seeing it |
| Payment | Store credit and any locally permitted alternative | Payment method is agreed with the buyer |
| Convenience of buying replacement items | Credit can be used in store | Cash or transfer must be used separately to buy something else |
Use the estimator, then compare the likely credit with realistic private-sale proceeds after postage, platform fees, travel and your time. There is no published universal trade-value statistic that can serve as a reliable benchmark for a particular game or console.
Why your quote can change
The item is not as described
Choosing the wrong edition, region, storage size or bundle in the estimator can produce an estimate that does not match the product on the counter. Recheck the model number and included accessories.
Condition or completeness deductions
Missing cases, covers, cables, controllers, docks or power supplies can reduce resalability. Scratches and damaged packaging may trigger refurbishment costs. Staff can also reject cracked, modified, incomplete or irreparable items.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Account, lock or network problems
A parental lock, remaining user account or network ban can prevent acceptance. Complete the sign-out, reset and network checks before you request a quote.

Daily and membership changes
Online estimates can change on the next calendar day, and the displayed “up to” amount is tied to EB World membership terms. A saved estimate is therefore date- and account-specific rather than a permanent price.
Can you trade a PS5, Xbox or Nintendo Switch?
Yes, those systems are among the modern formats EB Games lists for consideration. The same eligibility tests still apply: the unit should be an Australian model, unmodified, complete and working, with no account restrictions or network ban. A PS5 Digital Edition, disc model, Xbox package or Switch bundle can have different requirements because the included accessories differ, so select the exact product in the estimator and bring the matching controller, cables, power supply and dock where supplied.
For a Nintendo Switch, remove the user account, back up saves, reset the console and include the relevant Joy-Con controllers, straps, grip, dock and power adapter. Do not assume a console-only listing qualifies as a complete bundle. EB Games may consider incomplete or non-working hardware, but that is a discretionary decision after inspection rather than a guaranteed trade route.
What happens when you arrive at the store
- Tell the associate you want a Trade & Save assessment and present the item with its accessories.
- Show the required identification for your state. Staff may record your name, address and ID reference details.
- Allow the associate to examine and, where practical, test the media or hardware, including condition, completeness and resalability.
- Answer questions about ownership, quantity, account status or unusual items if asked.
- Receive the store-credit amount and any payment option permitted locally.
- Decide whether to accept. If you decline, ask for the item back before completing the transaction.
An online screenshot helps identify what you selected, but it cannot override a failed test, a missing component, a regional restriction or a changed daily value. If a quote is lower than expected, ask which specific condition or completeness issue caused the adjustment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you trade or buy another console?
Trade credit is most useful when you already plan to buy an eligible game, console or accessory at EB Games. For example, someone moving from an older system to a Nintendo Switch can use the estimator to compare the expected credit with the cost of the replacement console and any required accessories. The calculator does not guarantee that the old hardware will cover a particular percentage of the purchase, and no permanent value should be assumed for a specific storage size or bundle.
Before committing, compare the complete replacement cost—not just the console—with the credit you are likely to receive. Include controllers, a dock or power adapter where relevant, games and any other equipment you would need. If the store-credit amount is materially below what a private buyer would pay and you do not need an immediate replacement, the extra effort of a private sale may be worthwhile.
A practical store-visit checklist
- Exact product selected in the Trade & Save estimator
- Every original cable, controller, dock, power supply, case and box available
- Console tested, reset and free of parental controls and online bans
- Game verified as an Australian, English-language release
- No pirated, burnt, demo or promotional copies
- Government-issued photo ID and any additional state-required documents
- Dated screenshot or printout of the estimate
- Plan for how you will use store credit, and confirmation of local payment rules
At the counter, let staff inspect the item before making travel or purchasing plans around the value. If the offer is lower than expected, ask which missing component, condition issue or policy requirement caused the adjustment; you can then decide whether to accept the credit or take the item home.

Can I trade games at EB Games Australia?
Yes. Eligible games on supported current or retro formats can be assessed through Trade & Save. The release must meet Australian classification, compatibility and language requirements, and staff must approve its condition and completeness.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Can I trade in my PS5 or Nintendo Switch?
Yes, both are listed formats. Bring the exact Australian model with its original accessories, remove accounts and parental controls, and ensure it is not network-banned. The final decision and amount are made in store.
How much will EB Games give me for a console?
There is no permanent universal amount. Use the current Trade & Save estimator for a dated guide, then expect the store to adjust it after checking condition, completeness and resalability. Values can change the next calendar day and may differ by EB World level.
Do I need ID to trade games?
You need the identification required in your state. EB Games’ privacy policy says staff witness a government-issued photo ID and record identifying details for a trade; state rules can also specify age and additional address documents.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I get cash for an EB Games trade?
Payment options depend on state and transaction. In Western Australia, EB Games says cash trading is not permitted and credit cannot be issued through a gift card. Confirm the local option before accepting.
Why did my trade value change?
The estimator is only an estimate. A different edition or region, missing accessories, scratches, refurbishment needs, account locks, a network ban, membership level or a new calendar day can change the offer.
Can I trade a game without its case?
Some games may still be accepted with a missing case, cover, insert or rating, but a refurbishment charge can reduce the value. Retro games specifically need their case or box.
Can I trade several copies of one game?
EB Games limits the same or similar product to two copies per customer for a personal collection. Larger or unusual quantities may require documentation, and the store can refuse the trade.
Does EB Games match a higher trade offer?
Only under its narrow best-trade-price rules: the competing store must be in the same shopping centre or precinct, and the product and condition must match. Online retailers, private sellers and stacked trade promotions do not qualify.
What happens to my saved data when I trade a console?
Back up and erase it first. EB Games says stored content has no commercial value and ownership of stored material is forfeited when a console or memory device is traded.
The Bottom Line
EB Games Australia does accept many games, consoles and accessories, including current and retro formats. For the best chance of a useful offer, bring a complete Australian-compatible item, remove accounts and locks, carry the correct ID, and check the Trade & Save estimator on the day. Treat the online figure as a guide only: the inspected store offer, state payment rules and your alternative private-sale price determine whether the trade is worthwhile.
