Usually, no. A digital game purchase is normally a license attached to the account and storefront where it was bought. Moving from PlayStation to Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or Steam generally means buying the destination version unless the publisher explicitly provides cross-buy or a linked cross-entitlement. A move within the same platform family is different: the account, purchases and supported saves can often be restored on replacement hardware.
Your save file, downloadable content (DLC), multiplayer progress and game license are separate entitlements. One may follow you while another does not, so check each item before deleting the old installation or selling the original console.

What “transfer a digital game” actually involves
People use “transfer” to describe several different operations:
Recommended Free Tools
- Re-downloading on replacement hardware: the same account signs in to another console or computer in the same store ecosystem and downloads a purchase again.
- Moving a license to a different storefront: for example, turning an Xbox purchase into a PlayStation, Switch or Steam entitlement. This is the operation that normally is not supported.
- Moving save data: copying progress to another console or retrieving it from a cloud service.
- Carrying a publisher entitlement: signing in to a game maker’s account and receiving another platform version, cross-progression or cross-save.
An installed copy is only software files. It does not prove that the destination account owns a license, and copying those files to another platform cannot create one.

Why storefront licenses are platform-bound
Each platform holder operates its own store, account system, payment records and permission checks. A purchase made through one storefront is therefore normally valid only for that storefront’s supported devices. The destination platform has no automatic record that you paid elsewhere.
Nintendo states this directly: “It’s not possible to transfer digital purchases from one Nintendo Account to another.” Nintendo also explains that game save data, digital games and downloadable content are tied to the purchasing Nintendo Account. That policy is about account ownership, not merely where the game files are stored.
Microsoft describes downloaded Xbox games as having both “a device-based license and a user-based license.” The device license is associated with one designated Home console; the user license is associated with the Microsoft account that bought the game. Those mechanisms support access and sharing within Microsoft’s ecosystem, but they do not turn an Xbox purchase into a PlayStation, Nintendo or Steam license.
Cross-platform moves: the default answer by destination
| Original purchase | Destination | Normal result | What can change the result |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | Xbox, Nintendo Switch or Steam | Buy the destination version | A publisher may offer a documented cross-buy or cross-entitlement for that exact game and platform pair. |
| Xbox | PlayStation, Nintendo Switch or Steam | Buy the destination version | An explicit publisher entitlement; cross-play alone is not enough. |
| Nintendo Switch | PlayStation, Xbox or Steam | Buy the destination version | A game-specific program that grants another platform version. |
| Steam | PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch | Buy the destination version | A publisher account can sometimes link ownership or progression, but Steam ownership itself does not move. |
The words to look for on the game’s official page are cross-buy, cross-entitlement, cross-progression and cross-save. They are not interchangeable. Cross-buy or cross-entitlement can grant another copy; cross-progression or cross-save normally concerns progress; cross-play only means that players on different systems can play together.
PlayStation to Xbox, Nintendo or Steam
Assume the PlayStation store license stays on the purchasing PlayStation account. Check the game publisher’s documentation for a named entitlement program before paying again. If the documentation mentions only cross-play, multiplayer, or a linked account, do not treat that as a second-store purchase.

Xbox to PlayStation, Nintendo or Steam
The Microsoft account keeps its Xbox license. A publisher login may preserve characters, statistics or other online progression, but the destination platform still needs its own store entitlement unless the publisher says otherwise.
Nintendo Switch to another ecosystem
A Nintendo Account purchase does not become an Xbox, PlayStation or Steam purchase. Any transferable progress depends on the game’s own account and save systems, while the destination copy must be licensed separately in most cases.

Steam to a console
A Steam purchase remains a Steam storefront license. Installing the same title on a console, even when the game supports cross-play or uses the same publisher account, generally requires the console edition.
Xbox console to Windows PC
This is the most important same-company exception. Check whether the title is an Xbox Play Anywhere game or is otherwise documented as granting both the Xbox and Microsoft Store PC versions. When it does, use the same Microsoft account that owns the purchase and install the PC edition from the supported Microsoft storefront.
Do not assume that every Xbox game qualifies. An Xbox purchase and a Steam purchase are separate storefront licenses, even when the PC game is available on both services. Play Anywhere or another explicit entitlement must be named for the specific title.

The Microsoft licensing model still applies: access depends on the buying account and the supported device ecosystem, while Home-console rules govern console sharing. Changing a console’s designation or signing in on another device is an access arrangement, not an ownership transfer to a new account.

A replacement Switch is a same-platform move, not a cross-platform conversion. Sign in with the Nintendo Account that bought the games and use Nintendo’s system-transfer process or virtual-game-card features as applicable to your consoles. Nintendo describes a system transfer as moving the Nintendo Account, user profile, save data and eShop purchases to replacement hardware.
Digital games and DLC remain tied to the purchasing Nintendo Account. A different Nintendo Account on the new console does not inherit them. Nintendo Switch Online’s Save Data Cloud can restore saves for supported games, but restoring a save does not grant the game or its DLC to another account.
Before replacing the console
- Confirm that you can sign in to the purchasing Nintendo Account and that its email and password are current.
- Identify which games support Save Data Cloud and which require Nintendo’s local save-transfer process.
- Complete the official system-transfer or virtual-game-card setup before wiping the old console.
- Open each important game on the replacement console and verify both the save and any DLC access.
Creating a new account on the same platform
Creating a new account is not a license-migration method. Nintendo explicitly prohibits transferring a digital game or DLC to another Nintendo Account. Keep the purchasing account available on the replacement hardware if you need to redownload those items.
Xbox handles household sharing through the Home-console designation and signed-in-user rules rather than by changing the owner account. A person using a shared console may receive access under those rules, but the Microsoft account that bought the game remains the account associated with the user license.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
On any platform, changing the email address, console user name or profile label should not be confused with moving ownership to a separate account. Check the platform holder’s current account policy before closing an old account; closing it can remove your ability to authenticate the purchase.
Will saves follow you?
Sometimes, but only when the game and platform support a compatible transfer method. Saves can be stored locally, synchronized through a platform cloud service, or associated with a publisher account. These systems move progress data; they do not move the underlying storefront license.
- Same-platform replacement: a system-transfer tool or supported cloud backup may move the save with the profile.
- Cross-platform move: a publisher may provide cross-save or cross-progression through its own account system.
- Unsupported title: the save may remain locked to the original console, account or platform edition.
Confirm the exact game, edition and platform pair. A sequel, remaster or different regional release may not accept the original save even when the publisher account is shared.

DLC is normally a separate storefront entitlement. If the base game must be purchased again on the destination platform, expansions and currency usually need separate verification too. A cross-buy or cross-entitlement announcement may include the base game but exclude add-ons, season passes or consumables; read the publisher’s terms for each item.

How to check a specific game before you move
- Record the original purchase. Note the platform store, purchasing account, region and exact edition, including deluxe or bundle contents.
- Identify the destination edition. Confirm whether you are moving to another console family, Windows PC, Steam or a replacement device in the same family.
- Read the game publisher’s entitlement page. Search for the exact terms cross-buy, cross-entitlement, Xbox Play Anywhere, cross-save or cross-progression. The platform pair must be named; a general statement about multiplayer is insufficient.
- Separate the four checks. Verify the base-game license, DLC, save transfer and online progression independently.
- Check account requirements. Determine whether the publisher account must be linked and whether linking is limited to one platform account or region.
- Back up and test. Synchronize or transfer the save while the original system is available, install the destination edition, sign in, and load a known checkpoint before wiping anything.
- Budget for the fallback. If no entitlement is documented, plan for a new destination purchase; external drives and transfer cables can move files, not storefront rights.
Common assumptions that cause problems
“The game supports cross-play, so I own it everywhere.”
Cross-play concerns multiplayer compatibility. It does not promise cross-buy, a second license or a shared DLC entitlement.
“Copying the installation will avoid buying it again.”
Platform security checks the destination account and store license. Copied files cannot satisfy that check.
“My save is in the cloud, so the new platform will read it.”
Cloud storage is not a universal format. The destination game must support that save service or a publisher-managed cross-save system.

Account sharing or a Home-console arrangement can provide access under platform rules, but it does not reassign the purchase to a different owner account.
“Every edition shares DLC.”
Standard, deluxe, regional and remastered editions can have different entitlement records. Verify each add-on separately.
If the game is not recognized after a move
- Sign out and back in with the account that made the original purchase.
- Confirm that the destination store region and edition match the entitlement.
- Check whether the game is included through a publisher cross-buy program rather than the platform’s general library.
- Restore licenses or refresh the account’s library using the platform’s official support procedure.
- For saves, verify that cloud synchronization completed on the old device and that the destination title supports the same save method.
- Contact the platform holder or publisher with the transaction record if the documented entitlement is still missing.
The practical decision
For a different ecosystem, start from “new purchase required” and look for a written exception. For a replacement console in the same family, use the original account’s transfer, redownload and save-recovery tools. Treat the game license, save, DLC and publisher progression as four separate checks; that is the reliable way to know what will follow you and what will not.
