A digital game license is normally attached to the account and storefront that recorded the purchase. You can usually move that same account, downloads and saves to replacement hardware, but you generally cannot reassign the license to another account or turn a PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam or Epic purchase into an entitlement on a different storefront.
The exceptions are specific: a game may advertise cross-buy, a publisher may support cross-progression, or customer support may approve a rare account correction. Those options provide access under defined rules; they do not make digital ownership freely transferable.

What “transfer a digital game” can mean
People use “transfer” for several different actions. The answer changes depending on which one you mean.

- Account-to-account transfer: You move a purchase from one Nintendo Account, PlayStation Network account, Microsoft account, Steam account or Epic account to another. Storefronts generally do not offer this.
- Cross-platform entitlement: You buy on one storefront and expect the same license on another platform. That requires an explicit cross-buy or publisher entitlement; sharing an email address does not create one.
- Save or progression portability: Your character, achievements or cosmetics appear on another platform through a linked publisher account. This can work even when the store license does not move.
- Sharing access: Another profile on a console may be able to launch a game through console-sharing or a loaded virtual game card. That gives use under the platform’s rules, not ownership of the purchase.
Keep the license question separate from the download question. “Can I download the game on my new console?” is usually an account-migration issue. “Can I give the license to another account?” is usually prohibited.

The practical answer by situation

Moving games to a replacement console with the same account
Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s support guidance is explicit: “It’s not possible to transfer digital purchases from one Nintendo Account to another.” That rule concerns ownership between accounts, not replacing a console.
For a console replacement, Nintendo’s transfer workflow moves the user, the Nintendo Account association and save data to another Switch. After signing in on the replacement system, purchases associated with that account can be downloaded again. If the old console is unavailable, Nintendo’s guidance still allows you to sign in on the new console and redownload digital games, subject to the account and console requirements shown in Nintendo’s current setup instructions.
Nintendo also explains that downloaded content can be available to other users on a console when the relevant virtual game card is loaded. A second profile being able to play that copy does not change which Nintendo Account owns the purchase, and it does not create a transferable license for a different console or account.
PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5
Sony’s PS5 quick-start guidance describes signing in with the existing account during PS4-to-PS5 data transfer. Game history, trophies, profile information and downloaded content can carry over to the PS5. The purchase remains attached to that PlayStation Network account; the procedure is migration to supported hardware, not reassignment to another PSN account.
If a game is missing after migration, first confirm that the PS5 is signed in to the account that bought it, then check the account’s game library and the console’s download history. A different PSN account will not inherit the license merely because both accounts use the same household, email provider or console.
Xbox and other replacement consoles
The same principle applies on Xbox: sign in on replacement hardware with the Microsoft account that made the purchase, then use the current console’s library and migration tools. Moving a game from that account to a different Microsoft account is a separate ownership transfer and is generally not offered. Exact menu names and sharing rules can vary by Xbox generation and account settings, so use Microsoft’s current support instructions for the console you own.

Before disposing of the old console, verify that you can sign in, that two-factor authentication works and that your saves have synchronized. A console move cannot recover credentials for an account you can no longer access.
Why another account usually cannot receive your purchase
Digital storefronts grant a personal license to the account that accepted the store’s terms. They do not normally provide a “gift this owned game to another account” function after purchase. The restriction protects billing records, refunds, age ratings, downloadable content and online entitlements that are all associated with the original account.
Changing the email address on an account, adding another console user or linking a publisher profile does not rewrite the storefront’s ownership record. A recipient would need to buy the game on their own account unless the platform’s documented sharing feature applies.
Family and console sharing are access features
Some platforms let other profiles on a designated console launch games bought by the primary account. Treat this as permission controlled by the platform, not as a transfer. Removing the purchasing account, changing the designated console or signing out can end that access. Cloud saves, downloadable content, subscriptions and online play can have separate sharing rules.
Do not buy a game on a temporary account expecting to move it later. Support teams may correct an accidental purchase in limited circumstances, but there is no general entitlement to merge two independent libraries.

Cross-buy must be stated for that game
A PlayStation purchase does not automatically become an Xbox, Nintendo, Steam or Epic entitlement. The same title name, publisher account or email address is not evidence of cross-buy. Cross-buy is a deliberate program in which the publisher or platform grants access on specified platforms, often with edition, region and release-generation limits.

Check the game’s store listing and publisher documentation for the exact platforms covered. Confirm whether the benefit includes the base game only or also downloadable content, premium currency and expansions. If cross-buy is not expressly described, budget for a separate license.
Cross-progression is different from cross-buy
Cross-progression can synchronize a save, rank, inventory or cosmetics through a publisher account while each platform still requires its own store license. You may therefore see your character on PC after buying a PC copy, yet still need that PC copy even though you already own the console version.
Progress can also be limited by platform-specific items, age restrictions, regional servers or subscriptions. Read the game’s current cross-progression rules before disconnecting an account or starting a new profile.

Publisher-account linking: what it does and what it does not do
Ubisoft accounts
Ubisoft states that games and in-game content are linked to the platform account and Ubisoft account where they were activated. Its help guidance says: “Please note that it is not possible to transfer games to another platform or Ubisoft account.”
Linking a platform account can enable available cross-play and cross-progression. It does not move the store license. Ubisoft also warns that unlinking can permanently affect games and subscriptions, and that relinking is generally limited to the original platform account. If you are trying to correct the wrong link, stop before unlinking and follow Ubisoft’s support instructions.
EA accounts
EA supports linking console, Steam and Epic accounts to an EA Account, but warns that not everything transfers, including game progress. A link can identify the same player across platforms for features a particular game supports; it does not guarantee that every purchase, entitlement or save will follow.

EA’s multiple-account guidance says players cannot move games or platform accounts themselves. Support-mediated account merges may sometimes be considered, but they are not always possible. Bans, child-account status and age-rating restrictions can block a merge. Do not unlink a working account simply to test another login: you could lose access to progress, subscriptions or online features that depend on the original association.
Steam, Epic and other PC storefronts
Epic Games Store
Epic’s Terms of Service describe the license to its Licensed Products as “personal and non-transferable.” That means an Epic purchase is licensed to the Epic account that obtained it. Closing an account, changing its display name or linking a publisher account does not turn the purchase into a transferable key.
Steam-hosted publisher licenses
A Steam-hosted EA end-user license agreement contains a narrow one-time transfer clause when technical protection measures support such a transfer. The clause requires transferring all copies and retaining none, and online features or account-limited content may remain non-transferable. This is an exceptional software-license provision, not a general Steam feature for moving a library between Steam accounts. Treat any claimed transfer right as valid only if the specific game’s current license and support instructions say so.
Purchases made through a third-party PC store follow that store’s account and refund rules. Installing the same launcher on another computer is hardware migration; it does not transfer ownership to a second account.

Support is most useful when the problem is an account error, not when you simply want to give away a purchase. Possible cases include buying on the wrong account, a duplicate account created during setup or a platform link that was attached incorrectly. Policies differ, and approval is case-specific.
Prepare the information support is likely to need:
- The original platform and publisher account IDs, including the exact usernames or email addresses.
- Order numbers, purchase dates, transaction receipts and the game edition.
- The console or PC platform, region and any error message.
- Proof that you control the accounts, without sending passwords or authentication codes.
Do not sell, trade or share an account to bypass a transfer restriction. Account transfers can violate platform terms, expose payment details and trigger security or fraud checks. If an account is banned, a new account normally does not inherit the old library; appeal through the platform’s stated process instead.

A safe decision process
- Identify the license owner. Open the purchase history on the account that paid for the game. Confirm the platform and region.
- Classify the move. Decide whether you are replacing hardware, changing accounts, changing storefronts or seeking only save/progression access.
- For replacement hardware, migrate first. Sign in with the purchasing account, synchronize saves and use the platform’s official transfer or redownload workflow.
- For another account, assume no transfer. Investigate family or console-sharing access instead, understanding that it is revocable access rather than ownership.
- For another platform, verify cross-buy. Look for an explicit entitlement covering both platforms, edition and region. If it is absent, expect a second purchase.
- For publisher linking, read unlink warnings. Confirm which saves, cosmetics, subscriptions and purchases are portable before changing the link.
- For wrong, child or banned accounts, contact support. Keep the original account connected until support explains the consequences and confirms a path forward.
Common mistakes and recoveries
Signing into the wrong account on the new console
Sign out, identify the account shown on the original purchase receipt and sign in with that account. Do not repurchase until you have checked the library and transaction history.
Assuming a shared email means shared ownership
Two separate accounts can use addresses from the same household or email service. Storefront ownership follows the account ID and transaction record, not the relationship between email addresses.
Unlinking a publisher account to “reset” progress
Unlinking may remove access to progress, subscriptions or online features and may prevent relinking to a different platform account. Read the publisher’s warning and contact support first.
Expecting downloadable content or currency to follow a save
Even when cross-progression works, DLC, premium currency and subscriptions can remain platform-specific. Check each item separately before changing platforms.
Bottom line
You can normally move a digital library to replacement hardware by signing in with the same purchasing account. You generally cannot transfer that library to another account or storefront. Cross-buy, cross-progression, console sharing and rare support exceptions can change what you access, but each is narrower than an ownership transfer. Verify the exact game and platform rules before buying again or unlinking an account.
