ELDEN RING has no officially documented Xbox-to-Steam cross-save or cross-progression. Your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S character, inventory, achievements, and Shadow of the Erdtree progress will not appear when you install the Windows PC edition. Xbox-to-Xbox transfers are supported, however, through the Xbox ecosystem.
Can an Xbox save transfer to Steam?
The official supported answer is no. Xbox saves and Steam saves use separate platform systems, and ELDEN RING does not provide a service that converts one into the other. Signing into the same Microsoft account, Steam account, or any linked Bandai Namco account does not bridge those save systems.
The Xbox store listing identifies the game for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S with Smart Delivery, while Bandai Namco identifies the PC release through Steam. It does not list a Windows Xbox version or Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement: Xbox listing, Bandai Namco, Steam.
Do not buy the Steam version expecting your Xbox character to appear automatically. A new PC save is required.

Why Xbox cloud saves do not work on PC
Xbox cloud storage is a platform-managed backup and synchronization service, not a user-accessible folder containing a transferable PC file. It can restore an Xbox save to another compatible Xbox installation, but there is no supported consumer method to download that cloud data and place it in the Steam save directory.
Steam Cloud synchronizes the PC version’s own local save between PC installations; it does not import Xbox cloud data. Steam provides PC technical support and cloud context here: Steam Support and the Steam store page.

Do Smart Delivery or Xbox Play Anywhere help?
Smart Delivery
Smart Delivery selects the appropriate Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S version for an Xbox purchase. It does not make an Xbox save compatible with Steam and is not a Windows PC entitlement.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Play Anywhere titles carry a specific badge and can share saves, add-ons, and achievements between Xbox and Windows PC. Xbox’s explanation is at Xbox Play Anywhere. The current ELDEN RING Xbox listing shows Xbox consoles and Smart Delivery, not Windows PC play or that badge.

What happens if you buy the PC version?
- Buy and install the Steam base game from Steam.
- Launch it and create a new PC save; the Xbox character is not detected.
- If you want Shadow of the Erdtree, buy its Steam entitlement as well. The expansion requires the Steam base game: Shadow of the Erdtree on Steam.
Game entitlement, save compatibility, and DLC ownership are separate. Owning the Xbox game or Xbox DLC does not grant the Steam versions.
Can you use the Xbox save on a PC screen?
Possibly, but only by streaming an Xbox version through an officially supported Xbox cloud-gaming route, if the game is in the catalog when you check. That runs the console build remotely; it does not transfer a save to Windows or create a native Steam installation. Check current availability rather than assuming it is included. Xbox’s PC information is at Xbox on PC.

What about save editors and “conversion” services?
PC users can replace or edit PC save files, but that is not an Xbox-to-PC export method. An Xbox save cannot normally be copied from the console into Steam’s save folder. Downloading another player’s PC save gives you that save, not your Xbox character.
- Modified or incompatible saves can cause corruption or progression problems.
- They may create account or online-play risks.
- There is no official documentation supporting commercial “Xbox save converter” services.
Treat claims of guaranteed conversion as unsupported unless a current platform holder or publisher documents the method.

Xbox-to-Xbox transfers are supported
Moving between Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S is the exception. With the same Xbox account and normal synchronization, Smart Delivery and Xbox cloud-save behavior let the compatible Xbox version continue the save. This support stays within the Xbox family; it does not extend to Steam.

Choose the version based on your priority
- Keep your existing character: stay on Xbox One/Series X|S, or investigate current official streaming availability.
- Play natively on PC: buy Steam and plan to start over.
- Use PC mods, ultrawide support, or mouse and keyboard: Steam is the relevant edition, but Xbox progress still will not transfer.
- Play the expansion on PC: own the Steam base game and Steam DLC.
When Steam Cloud reports a local/cloud conflict, back up the PC save before choosing a file; Steam has documented such conflicts for ELDEN RING: Steam Cloud notice.
The Bottom Line
Stay on Xbox to keep your ELDEN RING save. Buy the Steam version only if you accept starting a new PC character; Xbox ownership and Shadow of the Erdtree do not transfer to Steam.
