The low-power result is the surprise, but it is not proof of universal AMD superiority: these are two complete handhelds, power may be measured differently, and some of AMD’s largest leads involved FSR 3 frame generation.
What is actually being compared?
This is a platform comparison, not a laboratory test of interchangeable chips. The AMD processor is the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme (usually shortened to Ryzen Z2 Extreme) in the MSI Claw A8. The Intel part is the Core Ultra 7 258V from the Lunar Lake family in the MSI Claw 8 AI+.

Cooling, BIOS settings, fan curves, drivers, memory configuration, display mode and MSI’s power-management software can all change results. The figures below came from Golden Pig Upgrade testing, as reported by HotHardware and Tom’s Hardware, rather than from an independently reproduced review suite.
Why the result is surprising
Lunar Lake was designed for low power and integrated graphics, and the Claw 8 AI+ had built a reputation for performing well against older AMD handheld hardware. That made Intel the expected low-wattage specialist. Instead, the reported Ryzen Z2 Extreme result was strongest where handhelds most often operate: roughly 15–20W.

The sensible interpretation is a performance-per-watt reversal in this test, not a generational knockout. Intel remained competitive at 30W, and the ranking can change with the game, driver, firmware and measurement point.
At 17W, AMD opened the clearest gap
Tom’s Hardware’s summary calculated an approximately 8.5% average AMD lead across four listed games at 1080p and a 17W target:

The distribution matters more than the average: Monster Hunter Wilds supplied a large part of the separation, while Far Cry 6 was effectively even. These are reported results from the cited test, not a guarantee for every game or software version.
At 30W, the contest was mostly close
HotHardware described an approximately 5% AMD advantage on geometric mean at around 30W, with roughly a 3% lead in 1% lows. Tom’s Hardware characterized the aggregate difference as about 6%, depending on the calculation and metric. Either way, this is a small gap in practical terms: it may require an FPS counter to notice, although stronger 1% lows can improve frame-time consistency.

There were important outliers. HotHardware reported AMD leads of approximately 27% in Monster Hunter Wilds and 20% in Assassin’s Creed Shadows in the referenced data. Those tests included AMD FSR 3 frame generation, so their displayed FPS cannot be treated as equivalent to the same amount of natively rendered performance. Frame generation can raise the overlay number while adding latency and depending on a lower native frame rate.
What may be driving AMD’s low-power showing?
The Z2 Extreme combines three larger Zen 5 cores and five Zen 5C cores with 16 RDNA 3.5 compute units. The Core Ultra 7 258V uses four Lion Cove performance cores, four Skymont efficiency cores and eight Xe2 graphics cores (Arc 140V-class graphics in the cited comparison). The reported operating ranges were 15–35W for AMD and 7–30W for Intel; the tested memory was listed as LPDDR5X-8000 on AMD and LPDDR5X-8533 on Intel.
Core counts and graphics-unit counts do not predict game speed by themselves. Clocks, drivers, memory bandwidth, architecture and the way each firmware divides package power are just as important.
CPU allocation can change GPU results
HotHardware found that restricting a game to the Z2 Extreme’s smaller Zen 5C cores could improve GPU-limited performance. The likely mechanism is straightforward:

- The game is limited primarily by the integrated GPU.
- The CPU does not need the fastest cores to sustain the target frame rate.
- Lower CPU consumption leaves more package power for graphics.
- The GPU gains enough headroom to raise frame rate.
This is an enthusiast experiment, not an out-of-box promise. A manually optimized AMD result should not be compared with an untouched Intel profile as though both configurations were equivalent.
Power limits and the scaling trap
Tom’s Hardware reported abnormal scaling when FPPT, SPPT and SPL were all set to the same value on the AMD system. In that configuration, the CPU could consume power that would otherwise have gone to the GPU. The reported workaround was an SPPT setting of 48W while retaining the relevant sustained limit; the short boost period was said to last about five seconds.
- FPPT: Fast Package Power Tracking, governing short boost behavior.
- SPPT: Slow Package Power Tracking, a longer package-power behavior.
- SPL: Sustained Power Limit, the long-term target.
Do not copy those values blindly. Controls and firmware behavior vary by handheld, and changing limits affects heat, noise, stability and battery drain.

This is the most important qualification. Lunar Lake uses memory integrated into the package, while the Ryzen system uses external system memory. Depending on where power is measured, Intel’s reported package figure may include memory consumption while AMD’s may not include all memory power. Two systems both labeled “17W” could therefore draw different amounts from their batteries.

A credible efficiency comparison must state whether the number is APU package power, CPU-plus-GPU power, SoC power, battery-side system power or charger-side AC power. The reported AMD lead demonstrates more gaming performance under that test’s limits; it does not establish longer battery life.
What the numbers mean during real play
- Average FPS: useful for throughput, but it can hide stutter.
- 1% lows and frame times: often more relevant to perceived smoothness.
- Native versus generated frames: keep these results in separate comparisons.
- Battery endurance: also depends on screen brightness, refresh rate, battery capacity, fans, SSD activity, radios and firmware.
- Sustained performance: requires a long run; short benchmarks can reflect temporary boost behavior.
The built-in display may make a 3–5% difference difficult to see, while a large game-specific gap can be obvious. A buyer who plays unplugged at 15–17W should weigh the low-power results differently from someone who stays connected to a charger at 30–35W.
Which MSI Claw is the better buy?

The cited Tom’s Hardware coverage described the pair as roughly $900–$1,000 in August 2025. That is historical pricing, not a current 2026 street-price claim. A modest performance lead can disappear if the AMD model carries a substantial premium; conversely, a discounted Claw 8 AI+ may be the better value despite Intel’s weaker 17W showing.
Bottom line
Ryzen Z2 Extreme appears to have closed—and in the cited 17W testing reversed—the low-power gaming advantage many buyers expected Lunar Lake to hold. Around 30W, however, AMD’s lead is generally modest and game-dependent. Choose the Claw A8 when 15–20W gaming performance and tuning matter, choose the Claw 8 AI+ when its price or stock behavior is clearly better, and do not infer battery-life superiority from nominal wattage or FPS alone.
