Yes, for some games—but the title and PC edition must support it. Xbox Play Anywhere games can sync progress between an Xbox console and a compatible Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC when you use the same Xbox/Microsoft account. Other games may offer their own cross-progression system. There is no universal Xbox save-file transfer that works for every game.
How Xbox-to-PC game data transfer works
For supported games, “transfer” usually means cloud synchronization, not copying a save file with a cable or external drive. Microsoft describes Game Saves as a system that can use cloud and local storage; each game’s developer determines how saves are implemented. Microsoft’s Game Saves documentation explains the underlying framework.
Xbox Play Anywhere provides one official route: participating games support cross-progression and cross-entitlement across Xbox consoles and compatible Windows PCs. Xbox says progress for a supported game is saved with Xbox. Xbox Play Anywhere and Microsoft’s developer overview describe the program.
These terms are not interchangeable
- Cross-progression or cross-save means game progress can carry between platforms.
- Cross-entitlement or cross-buy means a qualifying digital purchase grants access to versions on supported platforms.
- Cross-play means players on different platforms can play together; it does not, by itself, mean their saves are shared.
Check the game and the PC storefront first
- Look at the game’s Xbox Store listing or its publisher’s official support page for Xbox Play Anywhere or a specific Xbox-to-PC cross-progression statement.
- Confirm which PC edition you intend to use: Xbox app/Microsoft Store, Steam, or another launcher. Ask whether the publisher supports that exact pairing; signing in with an Xbox account alone does not establish that saves will transfer.
- For a game outside Play Anywhere, follow the publisher’s account-linking or cross-save instructions if it offers them. Support is title-specific.
Play Anywhere is a program-wide catalog, not a guarantee for an unnamed game. Xbox reported that more than 1,000 games supported Play Anywhere in an update published January 21, 2026; check the current listing for the particular title rather than relying on that total. Xbox Wire’s January 21, 2026 update gives the dated count.

Continue a supported save on Windows
- Install the compatible Windows edition covered by the game’s Play Anywhere or publisher cross-progression support.
- Sign in with the same Xbox/Microsoft account used on the console, unless the publisher’s instructions require additional account linking.
- Launch the game and let its cloud-save synchronization finish before switching between PC and console. The game’s own menus or status messages may show whether it has synced.
- If the game presents a choice between different saves, read the timestamps and prompts carefully. Choose the version you want to keep; selecting an older save may overwrite newer progress.
Microsoft’s save documentation describes cloud and local saves, while Steam documents its own separate, game-dependent Steam Cloud service. Steam Cloud does not prove that a Steam copy will share progress with the Xbox version; check the publisher’s guidance for that exact game and storefront pairing. Steam Cloud documentation also advises contacting the game developer about moving saves in some circumstances.
What may—and may not—carry over
Support for a shared save does not automatically settle every data question. Before changing versions, check whether the publisher says the connection covers progress only or also items such as add-ons, purchases, achievements, or other game data. Those details can vary by title and account system.

There is no general-purpose consumer cable or storage device that can add cross-progression to a game that lacks it. The official documentation describes software save services and title-specific synchronization, not a hardware method for converting arbitrary console saves.
