Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Usually, no: buying a game on one storefront does not normally give you ownership of that game on another. You may be able to move or copy its files, or add it to another launcher as a shortcut, but those actions do not transfer the purchase entitlement. Saves, DLC, and progression have separate, game-specific rules.
What “transferring a game” can mean
The phrase can refer to several different things. Distinguishing them is the key to knowing what will—and will not—work.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Purchase entitlement: The account and storefront that recognize your purchase and authorize you to play. This is what usually does not move between storefronts.
- Installed files: The game data stored on your computer. You may be able to move or copy it to save a download, but the destination launcher must still recognize and verify the installation, and the account must be entitled to play.
- Library shortcut: An entry in a launcher that points to a game installed or launched elsewhere. It is a convenience, not a new purchase.
- Game data and add-ons: Saves, cross-progression, DLC, currency, and account-linked unlocks may each follow different rules. They do not automatically transfer with the base game.
These distinctions matter because the parts may travel independently. A folder can be copied while the purchase remains on its original account; a shortcut can appear in another launcher while the game still starts through its original launcher; and a save may have its own rules even when you can launch the game on both platforms. “I can see it,” “I have the files,” and “this account owns it” are not interchangeable claims.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan you move a purchase from Steam to Battle.net, or vice versa?
Do not assume you can. A purchase generally remains tied to the storefront or account where it was made. Epic Games Store Support states that “Ownership does not transfer between platforms” and says games purchased on other platforms cannot be played through the Epic Games Launcher. Rockstar’s support documentation likewise describes its launcher entitlements as connected to the purchasing account and non-transferable between Rockstar accounts. These are concrete publisher examples, not a universal policy statement for every game or launcher. Check the official support page for the specific game and the account that owns it.

The available official information does not establish a current Battle.net-wide transfer policy. In particular, copying a Battle.net game folder into a Steam library—or adding a Battle.net executable to Steam—does not establish that Steam recognizes a Steam purchase. Confirm the game’s rules with its publisher rather than treating file compatibility as ownership.
That is also the practical answer if you ask, “Can I transfer a Steam game to another launcher?” In most cases, you should plan to use the storefront account that owns the game. If another storefront offers the same title, do not assume that buying or owning it on one service grants access on the other. Look for an explicit, current statement from the publisher for that particular title before making plans around a cross-store transfer.
There is no universal conversion process described by the support information reviewed here. A launcher’s ability to find a folder, or a game’s ability to start after you point to an executable, is not evidence that it will validate the license, receive updates, or provide access through that launcher. The relevant question is whether the destination storefront explicitly recognizes your entitlement—not just whether the files are present.

What happens if you add a non-Steam game to Steam?
Steam allows you to add a non-Steam game to your Library, but Steam Support describes the result as a shortcut: “This will only add a shortcut to your game in the Steam client.” It does not make the title a Steam purchase, provide Steam ownership, or deliver that game’s updates through Steam. The game may still need to launch through its own launcher or account.
Use this option if your goal is simply to keep a launch entry in one place. Do not use it as evidence that a game has transferred storefronts.
A shortcut is therefore useful for organization, not for changing the source of the game. It can make a game easier to find alongside Steam titles, but the game’s own launcher and account requirements still apply. If a game needs its original service to sign in, verify ownership, or update, the shortcut does not remove those requirements. Nor does it turn the shortcut into proof of Steam ownership or give Steam responsibility for the title’s updates.

Can you move game files without buying the game again?
Sometimes you can reuse local files to reduce redownloading, but moving files and transferring ownership are separate tasks. Use the first-party instructions for the launcher that owns the installation: its supported move or verification process is what can establish whether the destination installation is usable.
The right method depends on what you are moving and where it is going. Moving a Steam installation to another Steam library, moving an Epic installation to another directory while continuing to use Epic, and copying Steam files between PCs are different jobs. The official instructions cited here cover those cases for their own launchers; they are not a universal import tool for converting one storefront’s installation into another’s.
Move a Steam installation to another folder or drive
Steam documents moving installations by creating or selecting another Steam Library location and moving the game through Steam’s storage or library-management controls. After the move, Steam can verify the installed game files. Follow Steam’s current help instructions for the client version you use; the procedure concerns Steam installations and does not convert another storefront’s purchase into a Steam entitlement.
Verification is an important part of the process: having copied the game folder is not the same as having Steam recognize a usable installation. Use the client’s supported move and verification workflow rather than treating a manually copied folder as proof that the game is installed correctly. The entitlement remains with the account that owns the Steam game.
Move an Epic Games Store installation
Epic’s documented file-moving procedure is for moving an Epic-installed game to a different directory while continuing to use the Epic Games Launcher. It is not a method for importing a purchase from Steam or Battle.net into Epic. Consult Epic’s instructions before moving the folder so the launcher can locate or verify the installation.
Keep the scope of that procedure in mind: it addresses a change of directory for a game installed through Epic. Epic separately says games bought on another platform cannot be played through its launcher and that ownership does not transfer between platforms. A similar-looking folder on the new drive does not override that restriction.

Copy Steam game files to another PC over your network
Steam supports local network transfers of existing Steam game and update files between PCs when the relevant settings and conditions allow. This can avoid downloading the same files again over an internet connection. It copies installation data; the destination account still needs the right to play the game.
This is a same-store file-saving option, not a way to move a purchase from one account or launcher to another. Check the Steam client settings and current support guidance on both PCs, since the transfer depends on its settings and conditions. Even if the files arrive successfully, the destination account’s entitlement is still a separate requirement.
Use portable storage when it suits the job
An external drive can carry or back up local game files, but it carries files only. It does not transfer a purchase, unlock another storefront’s version, or move DLC entitlement. Portable storage is optional; use the owning launcher’s supported process to move or verify the installation.
Choose between a launcher-supported move, a local network copy, or portable storage based on the file-moving task—not on the hope of changing ownership. Steam documents its own move and local network options, while Epic’s documented move procedure concerns its own installation. The information here does not establish portable storage as a required or universal method, and it cannot replace the owning launcher’s verification process.
Choose the method that matches your goal
| Your goal | What may help | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a game visible in one launcher | Add a shortcut where the launcher supports it, such as a non-Steam entry in Steam. | Transfer ownership, make it a storefront purchase, or guarantee updates through that launcher. |
| Move an installation to another folder or drive | Use the owning launcher’s documented move and verification workflow. | Change which account or storefront owns the game. |
| Reuse files on another PC | Use Steam’s local network transfer for eligible Steam files, or move files using storage where appropriate. | Grant the destination account a new entitlement. |
| Play a purchase through a different storefront | Check the game’s official publisher support for an explicit cross-store option. | Work merely because files were copied or accounts were linked. |
| Carry saves, DLC, or progression | Check the game’s current rules for each data or content type. | Guarantee that those items follow the base-game purchase. |
For a same-PC move within the owning launcher, the concern is usually the installation path and whether the launcher can verify the files. For a second PC, the additional question is how to reuse or copy local data; Steam’s local network feature is one supported option for eligible Steam files. For a different storefront, the key issue is the license, not the transfer route. For saves and add-ons, investigate each separately rather than assuming that the base-game answer settles them.
Do saves, DLC, and progression transfer?
There is no universal rule established here. A game may treat saves, cross-progression, DLC, currency, and the base-game license as separate matters. Account linking or a successful file move alone does not prove that progress or add-ons will carry over.

Before switching platforms, look up the specific game’s official guidance for cross-save, cross-progression, and add-on compatibility. Check the exact platforms and accounts involved, and distinguish a save transfer from DLC access: having a save on another platform does not itself establish that you own the content used in that save.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBe especially careful about broad claims such as “link your accounts and everything transfers.” Account linking may be relevant to a game’s cross-progression rules, but this research does not establish that linking accounts transfers a storefront purchase, DLC, currency, or every type of save. Verify the rules for the exact game and content you care about. If the publisher’s guidance covers only progression, do not read that as a promise about the base-game license or add-ons.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check before moving or switching
- Identify what you own. Check the storefront account and purchase history that recognize the game.
- Decide what you want to move. Is it the purchase, the installed files, a library shortcut, a save, or DLC? These are different requests.
- Find the game’s official support guidance. Look for explicit statements about cross-store ownership, the relevant launcher, cross-save, progression, and add-ons. Do not infer support from another game’s policy.
- For files, use the owning launcher’s instructions. Follow its move, copy, or verification process and confirm the launcher recognizes the installation afterward.
- For a different PC, check the transfer method’s conditions. Steam’s local network transfer applies to Steam game and update files when its settings and conditions permit; it does not change ownership.
- Keep the original installation until the new one is verified. Do not delete the source files or assume the destination works until the owning launcher recognizes the game and you can launch it with an entitled account.
When checking support, match the wording to your goal. A page about moving an installation to a new directory is not a promise that another store will accept the purchase. A page about adding a shortcut is not a license transfer. A cross-save explanation is not automatically a DLC or cross-store ownership policy. This simple distinction can prevent the common mistake of following instructions for one kind of transfer and expecting a different one.
What is established—and what depends on the game
Official support documentation provides specific guidance for Steam shortcuts, Steam installation moves and local network file transfers, Epic installation moves and Epic’s cross-platform ownership position, and Rockstar’s account-bound launcher entitlements. Those examples support the practical rule that files and purchases are separate, but they do not establish a single policy for every storefront.
In particular, the available information does not establish a general Battle.net transfer policy or universal rules for saves, DLC, account linking, and cross-progression. For those questions, the game’s current publisher support page is the deciding reference.
Epic’s end-user license terms also describe its software license as personal and non-transferable, subject to the agreement and any software-specific terms. That is context for Epic’s own terms, not a substitute for the rules that apply to another launcher or for jurisdiction-specific legal advice. If your question is about a particular title, follow the current official terms and support guidance for that title and platform.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move a game from Battle.net to Steam?
Do not assume so. The information here does not establish a current Battle.net-wide transfer policy, and copying game files or adding a shortcut to Steam does not prove Steam ownership. Check the specific game’s official publisher support page and the account that owns it.
Can I transfer a Steam game to another launcher?
Usually, a storefront purchase remains with the account and service where it was bought. A different launcher may be able to show a shortcut or reuse files in some circumstances, but neither action by itself transfers the entitlement. Look for an explicit cross-store option for that specific game.
Can I move my game files to a new PC without downloading again?
Sometimes. Steam supports local network copying of existing Steam game and update files between PCs when settings and conditions allow. This can save a download, but the destination account still needs the entitlement, and the launcher must recognize the installation.
If I add a non-Steam game to Steam, do I own it on Steam?
No. Steam says adding a non-Steam game creates only a shortcut in the Steam client. It does not make the game a Steam purchase, establish Steam ownership, or provide Steam updates for that game.
Do my saves, DLC, or progression transfer when I switch launchers?
There is no universal rule. Check the game’s current official guidance separately for cross-save, cross-progression, DLC, currency, and the base-game license. Account linking or copying files alone does not confirm that any of these transfer.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You can sometimes move or copy game files, or add a shortcut to another launcher, but that is not the same as transferring a purchase. Use the owning launcher’s supported move or verification process for files, and check the specific game’s current official rules for cross-store ownership, saves, DLC, and progression.
