Yes—but usually only Rockstar Games Support can unlink a Steam account. Steam does not normally provide a self-service unlink button for Rockstar accounts. You must submit a request to Rockstar, and approval depends on its PC account-unlinking policy. Rockstar warns that unlinking may stop you from playing Rockstar titles through that Steam account and may put online progress at risk.
Before requesting an unlink
First identify exactly which accounts are connected. Open the Rockstar Games Connections page, sign in, and check the Steam account listed under connected accounts. Older Rockstar instructions may describe this as Settings > Linked Accounts.
Also confirm that you are signed in to the Steam account that owns the game. Creating a new Rockstar account will not normally solve the problem: only one Rockstar Games account can be linked to a Steam account at a time.
How to request a Rockstar-Steam unlink
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games account currently connected to Steam.
- Verify the connection on the Connections page.
- Open Rockstar’s official Account Settings > Linking/Unlinking Accounts request form.
- Describe the Steam account involved and the Rockstar account currently linked to it.
- Explain why you need the unlink—for example, that the wrong account was connected accidentally, that the account may have been compromised, or that you need to recover access.
- State whether you have launched or played a Rockstar game and whether any progress was created on the linked Rockstar account.
- Say whether you want to connect the Steam account to a different Rockstar account after the request is approved.
- Include Rockstar’s required written acknowledgement that you understand access to Rockstar titles through that Steam account may be lost and that online progress may be lost.
Rockstar—not Steam—decides whether the request is eligible. There is no guaranteed approval or published universal processing time in the cited support guidance.

When Rockstar may refuse or delay an unlink
Rockstar’s PC account-unlinking policy identifies several important restrictions:
- Cooldown: After a PC platform account is linked or changed, another change may be blocked by a cooldown. Support agents cannot bypass it; you must wait until it expires. Rockstar’s current guidance does not establish one universal duration.
- Suspension or ban: An active suspension or ban makes the account ineligible while that security action remains in place. Unlinking is not a way to evade a ban or move banned progress to another account.
- Gameplay or progress: A one-time, case-by-case exception may be available when the wrong PC platform account was linked and there is no gameplay time or Rockstar-title progress associated with that account. This is not a guarantee.
- Insufficient account access: If you cannot access the linked Rockstar account or its email, Rockstar may require account recovery or ownership verification first.
If you lost access to the Rockstar email
This is primarily an account-recovery problem, not a routine unlink request. Try to recover the Rockstar account first, check the old email account for Rockstar security or account-change messages, and use Rockstar’s lost-email account recovery guidance.

Avoid creating multiple competing Rockstar accounts or repeatedly attempting to relink Steam. Those actions can make the account history harder to explain and may trigger the PC linking cooldown.
What unlinking changes
It does not transfer the Steam purchase
Your Steam purchase remains associated with the Steam account that bought the game. Unlinking does not move the license to another Steam account or automatically grant the game to another Rockstar account. Steam’s guidance says subscriptions and CD keys cannot be transferred between Steam accounts.

However, Steam ownership alone does not guarantee access when the required Rockstar account connection has been removed. The Rockstar launcher and entitlement check still depend on the correct account link.
Online progress may not follow you
Do not assume GTA Online or Red Dead Online characters, money, items, purchases, or other progress will follow the Steam account. Rockstar explicitly warns that online progress may be lost, and you should not assume it will be restored if a different Rockstar account is linked later.

Local saves are a separate issue
Rockstar’s unlink warning does not provide a universal rule for every local Story Mode save. Back up local save files before requesting the change, but treat that backup only as protection for local files—not as a method of restoring online progress.
Rewards and account-linked items may have restrictions
Steam achievements, Rockstar-side progress, downloadable content, in-game purchases, and account-linking rewards do not necessarily behave the same way after an unlink. Rockstar says some linking rewards can be claimed only once per platform account, so relinking may not make them available again.

Which support team should you contact?
For a Rockstar account connection, contact Rockstar Support first. Steam directs users to the game publisher for problems that occur after a third-party game has loaded and says it cannot resolve issues in a third-party registration system.
Steam Support remains appropriate for Steam account access, purchases, payment problems, Steam client errors, or license and library issues. Never pay a third party to “unlink” the account or share credentials with someone claiming to be support. Steam warns against unsolicited support instructions received through Discord, Steam Chat, or other unofficial channels.
Common problems and the correct response

| Game asks you to buy it again | Do not repurchase immediately. Check the Steam account’s library, confirm the Rockstar account connection, and verify which account the launcher is using. |

The short version
You can request that Rockstar unlink Steam, but you generally cannot do it yourself and approval is not automatic. Verify the linked account, use Rockstar’s official linking/unlinking form, explain the circumstances accurately, and acknowledge the potential loss of access and online progress before submitting.
