Not through ordinary, repeatable home-console progression. The five gold machines in F‑Zero GX were tied to Japan-only events and to a legitimate transfer from F‑Zero AX using a compatible arcade setup, a GX save and the required card process. A recently reported four-controller input can reveal the gold parts in the Shop, but it is a built-in cheat/debug route, so it does not meet a strict “without cheats” definition.
Normal Story Mode, Grand Prix completion and ticket earning do not have a documented unlock for these event-exclusive parts. You can still buy parts revealed by an unlock input with tickets, but buying them is not the same as obtaining them through standard progression.

What the golden cars actually are
The “golden cars” are not five complete vehicles awarded as single inventory items. They are gold body, cockpit and booster components that can be assembled into five named machines:
- Thunderstorm
- El Dorado
- Chrono Symphony
- Bahamut
- Gladiator
When the relevant parts are made visible in the F‑Zero Shop, you still need the game’s tickets to purchase them. An unlock therefore changes what the Shop offers; it does not automatically hand you a finished car or waive the ticket cost. This distinction matters when checking a save file: seeing a machine in a garage after buying its three components is different from receiving a complete vehicle directly.

The two historical legitimate routes
Japan-only event distribution
Contemporary coverage described the gold sets as prizes from events held in Japan. They were not part of the normal overseas progression path. That means a North American or European copy does not acquire the parts simply by clearing every Story chapter, winning every Grand Prix or accumulating a large ticket balance. Event distribution was a separate access channel, not a hidden reward tier in the regular campaign.
Because those events were time-limited and geographically restricted, their historical legitimacy does not make them a practical, repeatable home-console method today. A player who did not receive the data through the original event cannot recreate that route by replaying ordinary GX content.
Transfer from an F‑Zero AX arcade machine
The other legitimate method used the arcade version, F‑Zero AX. The Sega/Amusement Vision F‑Zero AX manual explains that, with a Memory Card inserted and certain conditions satisfied, the machine could download special AX data to the card. That downloaded data could then be used in F‑Zero GX.

In practical terms, this route required all of the following:
- A compatible F‑Zero AX arcade installation with the transfer feature available.
- A GameCube Memory Card containing a F‑Zero GX save.
- The arcade’s license-card procedure, because the machine used the player license and its qualifying conditions to authorize the data.
- A way to bring the Memory Card back to the console and load the transferred data in F‑Zero GX.
The manual’s wording establishes the transfer function, but it does not turn every surviving AX cabinet into a guaranteed source of the gold sets. Cabinets, reader hardware, license systems and local event configurations varied, and many machines are no longer accessible. Treat AX transfer as a historically legitimate route that depends on finding the correct, working arcade environment—not as a menu option that can be reproduced on a stock console.
Why Story Mode, Grand Prix and tickets are not enough
The game’s normal economy can make the gold parts seem like they should be late-game rewards. You earn tickets, spend them in the Shop and unlock a large amount of ordinary customization through play. The gold content follows a different rule: it is identified as event-exclusive custom parts, while Action Replay is treated as a separate unlock mechanism.

Consequently, these actions do not constitute a documented gold-part unlock:
- Finishing Story Mode, including the higher difficulty chapters.
- Completing Grand Prix cups or achieving top ranks.
- Saving enough tickets to afford every visible Shop item.
- Buying all ordinary body, cockpit and booster components.
- Using a fully completed save file from regular GX progression.
Tickets have a role after the gold inventory is exposed, but they do not expose event-only inventory by themselves. If the parts are absent from your Shop, continuing to farm tickets or replaying a completed cup will not change that state under the documented rules.
The four-controller input reported in 2026
On October 12, 2026, Nintendo Wire reported five sequences that can be entered at the F‑Zero Shop screen with four controllers connected. The report says the corresponding gold body, cockpit and booster parts appear for purchase. It does not describe these inputs as an ordinary progression reward, and the sequences are best understood as built-in cheat or debug inputs even though they use standard controllers rather than an Action Replay device.

How to try the reported input
- Use a GameCube or compatible setup running F‑Zero GX with four controllers connected. The report specifically describes simultaneous four-controller use, not a one-controller shortcut.
- Enter the game’s F‑Zero Shop screen before attempting a sequence.
- Use the sequence associated with the desired machine set exactly as listed, including button order and directional inputs.
- Check the Shop inventory for that set’s body, cockpit and booster components.
- Purchase the components with tickets, then assemble the machine through the normal customization interface.
These instructions identify the reported behavior; they do not convert it into a no-cheat method. The publication reporting the sequences has not been shown here to have a current official Nintendo support notice validating them, and regional revisions, controller adapters or timing differences could affect whether a sequence responds. Do not erase a valuable save while experimenting; back up or use a separate Memory Card if preserving an existing file matters.

Choosing the right answer for your situation
If “without cheats” means no debug input at all
There is no currently verified, repeatable home-console procedure that unlocks the gold cars through standard GX play. The only qualifying historical answers are the Japan event distribution and the AX transfer. If you cannot access the original event data or a compatible AX setup, the honest answer is that the gold parts are not obtainable under that strict rule.
If you own four controllers and only want the content
The reported sequences are the direct practical route, but they should be labeled cheats because they intentionally invoke hidden behavior. Connect all four controllers, enter the desired sequence at the Shop, verify the parts appear and budget tickets for the purchases. This is faster than searching for a nonexistent Story Mode requirement, but it does not satisfy a no-cheat challenge or a ruleset that bans debug inputs.

If you are considering Action Replay
Action Replay is another cheat-based mechanism and is discussed separately from the event-exclusive status of the parts. It is not needed to identify the four-controller sequences, but using any external code device still falls outside a strict no-cheat definition. If your goal is a legitimate provenance for the save, prefer documented event or AX data rather than a code device.
If your Shop does not change
Check the conditions before assuming the game is missing content:
- Confirm that you are at the F‑Zero Shop screen, not the garage or a race menu.
- Confirm that all four controllers are connected and recognized before entering a reported sequence.
- Re-enter every button in the published order; a single wrong direction changes the sequence.
- Look for individual body, cockpit and booster entries rather than a new complete-car icon.
- Verify that you have enough tickets to buy the components after they appear.
- Do not infer that a failed input proves ordinary progression can unlock the parts; the normal route remains undocumented.
What a legitimate completion record should show
Players documenting a no-cheat claim should distinguish the source of the data, not merely show the finished machine. A credible record would identify whether the gold content came from an original Japan event, an AX transfer or a code-based input, and would show the save and hardware context. A garage containing Thunderstorm, El Dorado, Chrono Symphony, Bahamut or Gladiator by itself cannot tell viewers which route was used.

A transferred or downloaded save may contain event data, but its presence does not demonstrate that the current console unlocked the parts through Story Mode. Keep the categories separate: normal GX rewards, event data, AX transfer data and cheat/debug inputs are different origins even when they produce the same purchasable components.
