Yes, but “safe” depends on what you are trying to preserve. Sony’s documented Safe Mode tools can update, reset, or reinstall a PS5, provided you use Sony’s signed software file and follow the USB instructions exactly. An official firmware update can also move the console beyond the firmware version required by a jailbreak, potentially ending jailbreak compatibility. Sony documents no supported jailbreak-preserving downgrade or rollback, so treat a firmware change as effectively irreversible unless you have independently confirmed a recovery method for your exact model and version.
A reset and a system-software reinstall are different operations. Restore Default Settings keeps games and saves on the console. Reset PS5 erases user data but leaves the installed system software in place. Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) erases user data and removes and replaces the system software. None of these choices guarantees a PSN unban or deletion of every historical account or console record.

Decide what “safe” means before changing anything
On a jailbroken PS5, safety has two separate dimensions: protecting your local data and preserving access to the firmware-specific exploit you currently use. The official recovery process is designed to repair or reset the console, not to preserve unofficial modifications. A procedure can complete successfully and still end your jailbreak because the installed firmware has changed.
If the console is working and your only goal is newer official software, an ordinary system update is less destructive than a reset. If you need to remove personal data before selling or troubleshooting, choose the least destructive reset that meets that goal. If system files are damaged, the full reinstall is the most comprehensive official repair, but it deletes everything stored locally.

What each Safe Mode option changes
Enter Safe Mode only after deciding whether your current firmware matters. These options are not interchangeable.

“Factory reset” is therefore ambiguous. Restore Default Settings is a settings reset, Reset PS5 is a data wipe, and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) is a data wipe plus a complete system-software replacement.
Will updating remove your PS5 jailbreak?
It can. PS5 jailbreaks are tied to particular system-software versions and vulnerabilities. When Sony installs a version that closes or changes the relevant vulnerability, the exploit may no longer run. The update can be perfectly legitimate and still make the jailbreak unavailable.
There is no Sony-supported option that updates the console while preserving an unofficial exploit, and Sony’s public recovery instructions do not document a jailbreak-preserving downgrade. Do not assume that a later reinstall will return the previous version. Unless you have independently verified a supported recovery process for your exact console model and firmware, regard an update or reinstall as a one-way decision.
A reset that does not alter system software is a different risk. Restore Default Settings normally leaves the installed firmware untouched, while Reset PS5 removes user data but is not the same as replacing the operating system. Neither option should be described as a guaranteed way to keep a jailbreak working: local files and configuration needed by an unofficial setup can be erased, and Sony does not support that setup.

Back up and check the console before entering Safe Mode
Back up anything you can still access before selecting a reset or reinstall. A full reinstall is intentionally destructive, and an interrupted or failed recovery may leave you needing additional repair.
- Copy or synchronize saves using the storage method available to your account and console. Verify that the backup actually contains the saves you care about.
- Move screenshots, video clips and other irreplaceable files off the console.
- Record settings you will need to recreate, including network details, display configuration and accessibility choices.
- Decide whether preserving the current firmware is more important than obtaining an official update. If it is, do not start an update or reinstall until you have checked the exact firmware requirement for your jailbreak.
- Use only Sony’s official update or reinstallation file. Never substitute a modified PUP, exploit payload or an unofficial “downgrade” package.
- Keep the console connected to reliable power and avoid removing the USB drive while the process is running.
If you cannot back up a file because the console will not boot, accept that a reinstall may permanently remove data that was not copied elsewhere.

The same physical preparation supports either an update or a full reinstall. The Safe Mode menu determines which operation occurs.
- Prepare a USB drive. Format the drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases the drive, so copy off any files you need first.
- Create the required folders. At the root of the USB drive, create a folder named
PS5; inside it createUPDATE. Folder names must match exactly. - Download Sony’s official file. For a manual update or reinstall, use the file Sony provides for that purpose. Save it in
PS5/UPDATEand name itPS5UPDATE.PUP. Sony warns not to install an update using data other than its official file. - Power the PS5 off completely. Do not use Rest Mode. Wait until the power indicator is off.
- Start Safe Mode. Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep, which occurs several seconds after the first. Connect the controller with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Select the least destructive appropriate command. Choose Update System Software when you need an official update. Choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only when you accept deletion of all local data and need the operating system removed and installed again.
- Let the process finish. Keep power connected and do not interrupt the console. Follow the on-screen prompts and allow the PS5 to restart.
- Restore your content after a successful reset. Re-enter settings, sign in where appropriate, and restore only the backups you verified before starting.
If Safe Mode cannot find the file, check the drive format, capitalization, folder nesting and filename. The path must be exactly PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP at the USB root; an extra folder level is a common cause of detection failure.
When should you choose each option?
You want official firmware but no data wipe
Choose Update System Software, preferably after backing up. This is the least destructive official route for a functioning console, but it is the option most likely to end access to a version-specific jailbreak because it changes firmware.

You want to clear settings while keeping installed content
Choose Restore Default Settings. It returns settings to factory defaults without deleting games, apps, captures or saves stored on the console. You will need to configure the system again afterward.
You are selling the PS5 or handing it to another person
Choose Reset PS5 after backing up and signing out as appropriate. It deletes user data and restores the console to its original state. A data wipe is not a promise that Sony’s service records, enforcement history or account status have been erased.
The operating system is corrupted or normal recovery fails
Choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only after accepting total local-data loss. It is Sony’s last-resort software recovery step, not a method for selecting an older firmware version or preserving a jailbreak.

No guarantee exists. A local reset changes data and settings on the PS5; it does not establish that an account suspension, console restriction, enforcement record or other service-side consequence has been removed. Sony’s recovery guidance does not promise that a reset deletes every historical log or reverses an enforcement action. Treat any claim that a factory reset automatically unbans PSN as unsupported.
If access is restricted, use Sony’s account or PlayStation support process for the specific notice you received. Do not repeatedly reset the console expecting a network-side decision to change.

What can go wrong, and how should you respond?
The console rejects the USB file
Recheck that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, that PS5 and UPDATE are uppercase, and that the file is named PS5UPDATE.PUP with no additional extension. Download the official file again rather than modifying it.
The update stops or loops
Do not install an unofficial package or attempt an improvised downgrade. Power interruptions and corrupted files can complicate recovery. Return to Safe Mode using the official procedure and, if the documented process still fails, use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs route.
The PS5 boots but the jailbreak no longer works
That outcome is consistent with a firmware compatibility change. Do not assume a reset will restore the exploit. Check the firmware version shown by the console and treat any further system-software action as potentially irreversible.
You forgot to back up
A reinstall cannot be treated as a recovery of deleted local data. Stop before confirming the wipe if the console still boots, and copy whatever remains accessible. After deletion, only backups or synchronized copies can restore the content.

Sony’s safety guidance says warranty coverage may be voided when the company reasonably believes a console was used in a way that violates system-software or game-software licence terms. A Safe Mode reinstall uses Sony’s official software, but that fact does not retroactively make an earlier unofficial modification supported or guarantee warranty service. Keep this limitation in mind before sending a modified console for repair.
A cautious decision checklist
- Preserve firmware: avoid Update System Software and Reinstall until you have verified the consequences for your exact jailbreak and version.
- Preserve local content: back up first; use Restore Default Settings when only settings need to be cleared.
- Erase personal data: use Reset PS5, understanding that it removes local users and content.
- Repair damaged software: use Reinstall System Software with Sony’s official
PS5UPDATE.PUPand accept a complete wipe. - Protect the console: use a correctly formatted USB drive, stable power and the second-beep Safe Mode procedure.
- Handle service restrictions separately: a reset is not an unban and is not proof that every historical record has been removed.
The safest supported approach is to back up first, choose the narrowest Safe Mode operation that solves the actual problem, and use only Sony’s documented files and recovery path. On a jailbroken PS5, preserving the current firmware is a separate decision from resetting the console’s data.
