In No Man’s Sky, the class of an owned freighter is described as fixed, so you cannot upgrade it into a higher class. If class is what you want to change, you need to acquire a different freighter.
What can you upgrade on a freighter?

How do you improve technology or storage?
For technology, salvage technologies from derelict freighters and use the freighter’s Upgrade Control terminal. The exact item names, limits, and interface details can change with game updates, so check the current in-game options rather than relying on an old slot-cap guide.
The community guide also lists Salvaged Frigate Modules as a resource for freighter upgrades and names derelict freighters, crashed freighters, Nexus missions, and frigate expeditions as possible sources. Those are secondary-source details, not a current official drop-rate or farming guarantee.

Can you upgrade a freighter’s class like a regular ship?
No class-upgrade route for an owned freighter is established by the sources cited here. The community freighter guide says its class is fixed, so the practical option is to find and acquire a different freighter of the class you want. Exact encounter rates, prices, search methods, and transfer behavior are not established here.
Do not confuse freighter class with starship class. Hello Games’ Synthesis update explicitly describes spending nanites to upgrade a starship’s class at the Starship Outfitting Terminal. That documented starship feature does not establish an equivalent freighter upgrade.

Should you keep your freighter or look for another?
