Yes—but only certain PS5 Digital Edition model groups can take Sony’s add-on drive. The separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive is compatible with the CFI-2000 Digital Edition (the Slim generation) and with consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not compatible: Sony says that model group does not support disc-based games or media. Check the model number before buying anything, and plan on an internet connection during the drive-and-console pairing process.
Which PS5 Digital Edition models can be upgraded?
The model group, not simply the words “Digital Edition” on the box, determines whether a drive can be added. Sony’s support documentation identifies three relevant groups:

For the official compatibility statement, see PlayStation Support’s disc and USB media guidance. That page is the important distinction for owners of the first-generation digital console: an external USB optical drive or an unofficial modification is not presented as an upgrade route for CFI-1000.
How to check your console before buying
Find the console’s complete model identifier on the console itself or in the paperwork that came with it. The relevant part is the CFI model group: CFI-1000, CFI-2000 or CFI-7000. Match that group to the table above rather than relying on a retailer’s generic “PS5 Digital” description.

If the identifier starts with CFI-1000
Stop there. Sony’s documentation says the CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media. Buying a CFI-ZDD1-series drive for this console is therefore not an official upgrade plan. If playing physical games is essential, the practical choices are to keep this console for downloads or replace it with a compatible model; the support material does not describe a conversion kit for CFI-1000.
If the identifier is in the CFI-2000 group
This is the Slim Digital Edition path covered by Sony’s setup instructions. You need the separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series drive, a compatible console in that model group, and internet access for pairing during setup.
If the identifier is in the CFI-7000 group
Sony also lists CFI-7000 consoles as compatible. Because the support wording treats this as a model-group compatibility question, verify the exact identifier before ordering and use the instructions intended for your console’s panels and feet.

What the upgrade actually adds
The CFI-ZDD1-series unit is a physical disc drive that attaches to supported PS5 hardware. On a compatible CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 console, it provides the route to use disc-based games and disc media that a digital-only configuration cannot read by itself. The drive is an accessory, not an item automatically included with every Digital Edition console.
This distinction matters when comparing listings. A console described as “Digital Edition” may be sold without a drive even when its chassis can accept one. Conversely, the first CFI-1000 Digital Edition remains unsupported despite having the same broad PS5 family name. Treat the model number as the deciding specification.

How to install the disc drive on a supported console
Sony’s procedure is a physical installation followed by electronic pairing. Read the official PS5 disc-drive setup instructions for the diagrams that correspond to your model. The high-level sequence is:
- Turn the console off completely. Do not work on a running or Rest Mode console.
- Disconnect power and other cables. Unplug the power lead and remove the connected cables so the console can be handled safely.
- Allow the console to cool. Sony specifically directs you to wait before removing panels. This avoids handling hot surfaces and gives the hardware time to reach a safe temperature.
- Remove the designated cover and feet. The compatible chassis has a panel and feet arrangement that differs from the original CFI-1000 design. Use the model-specific illustrations rather than forcing a panel or assuming the first-generation layout applies.
- Attach the CFI-ZDD1-series drive. Seat the drive according to Sony’s alignment and attachment instructions. If it does not fit with light, even pressure, stop and recheck the model and panel position; forcing it can damage the enclosure.
- Reconnect the console and start it. Restore the power and other cables after the drive is physically secured.
- Pair the drive and console over the internet. Sony requires an internet connection during setup so the drive can be paired with the console. Complete the on-screen process while the console is online.
The support instructions also tell you to keep the cover and feet removed during installation. Store those parts safely: Sony says they are needed if you later use the console without the drive attached. Do not discard them with the packaging.

An internet connection is a setup requirement, not an optional convenience. The drive and console must be paired during the initial installation, so have the console connected to the internet before beginning the software portion of the procedure. A console that is physically compatible can still fail to complete setup if it cannot reach the required online service.
The documentation establishes the need for internet access during pairing. It does not state that the console must remain online every time you launch a game or play previously installed software. Avoid treating the setup requirement as proof of a permanent online-play requirement; those are separate questions.
If pairing does not complete
- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet before starting the pairing step.
- Power the console down and repeat the physical checks: correct model group, fully seated drive, and correctly replaced or removed panels as shown in Sony’s instructions.
- Use the support page for the exact CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 panel sequence. A procedure for a different chassis can leave the drive misaligned.
- If the console is a CFI-1000 Digital Edition, stop troubleshooting the accessory: Sony does not list that model group as compatible.
Buying the right drive
Look for Sony’s CFI-ZDD1-series identifier, and confirm that the listing describes a disc drive sold separately from the console. The official documentation establishes compatibility and separate sale, but it does not establish a current price, stock level or country-by-country availability. Those details can change, so verify the live listing and regional support terms before paying.

Do not buy on the assumption that any “PS5 disc drive” fits any PS5. The supported groups in the documentation are CFI-2000 and CFI-7000. If a listing omits the model compatibility, ask the seller to identify the accessory as the CFI-ZDD1 series and compare that information with Sony’s support page.

- It does not give a universal price for the drive.
- It does not promise that the accessory is in stock in every country or region.
- It does not provide an upgrade method for CFI-1000 Digital Edition consoles.
- It does not say that a third-party optical drive can substitute for the CFI-ZDD1 series.
These omissions are reasons to check the current regional product page rather than rely on an old price, an international listing or a marketplace description written for a different model.

Assuming every Digital Edition is upgradeable
The most expensive mistake is buying the drive before checking the CFI group. CFI-1000 is the original unsupported Digital Edition; CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 are the groups Sony lists for the add-on drive. Make the model check the first step, not the last.
Confusing a console bundle with an included drive
A compatible Digital Edition can still be sold without an optical drive. The CFI-ZDD1-series unit is separately sold, so inspect the contents of the exact bundle you are considering.
Starting installation while the console is warm or connected
Sony’s instructions call for a full shutdown, unplugging cables and allowing the console to cool. Skipping those steps makes panel removal less safe and increases the chance of handling the hardware incorrectly.

Throwing away the original parts
The removed cover and feet are not disposable packaging. Keep them together in a labeled box. Sony says they are required if the console is used without the drive attached later.
Forcing a cover or drive that does not align
Different model groups have different panel layouts. If the drive or cover does not align as shown in the official diagrams, stop and recheck the CFI identifier and the orientation. Mechanical resistance is a signal to consult the model-specific instructions, not to apply more force.
Choosing between upgrading and staying digital
For a CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 owner who wants physical games or disc media, the official drive is the straightforward supported route. It preserves the existing console while adding the capability that is missing from the digital-only setup. The trade-off is the separate accessory purchase and the installation and pairing steps.
For a CFI-1000 owner, the decision is different because the official drive path is unavailable. Continue using downloaded software on that console or evaluate replacement with a model group Sony lists as compatible. Do not budget for a CFI-ZDD1-series drive as though it will convert the original chassis.

- Confirm that it is CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 before ordering the drive.
- Match the accessory to Sony’s CFI-ZDD1-series designation.
- Check the current regional listing for price, stock and availability; those details are not fixed by the support documentation.
- Ensure you can connect the console to the internet during pairing.
- Have a safe, cool, unplugged workspace for removing the cover and feet.
- Keep the removed cover and feet for possible future use without the drive.
Bottom line for each model
There is an official upgrade answer, but it is not one-size-fits-all. A CFI-2000 Digital Edition can accept Sony’s separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series drive, and Sony also lists CFI-7000 consoles as compatible. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot use this add-on according to Sony’s support guidance. Identify the model first, then buy the correct drive, install it with the console powered off and cool, and complete the required internet pairing.
