You can run a 24/7 YouTube livestream from prerecorded tabletop RPG sessions by feeding a cleared playlist to an encoder and connecting it to YouTube with a server URL and stream key. The key planning issue is the archive: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a continuous feed and dependable session-by-session VODs need separate planning.
Before you start: clear the sessions and assets
Only rebroadcast recordings you have the rights and permissions to use. That includes agreement from players and permission for music, artwork, overlays, and other third-party material in the VODs. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions put responsibility for necessary rights, including music rights, on the content provider.
Prepare a playlist of session recordings, and make its order and transitions intentional. Label the channel and stream as session replays so viewers understand that the footage is prerecorded rather than a live game.
Choose where the encoder will run
Local encoder
A software encoder on your computer or a hardware encoder sends the video feed to YouTube. For a locally generated feed to stay live, the encoder, the media playback, power, and internet connection must remain available. YouTube’s encoder guide explains how to connect using the server URL and stream key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cloud encoder
A cloud encoder runs the playlist and sends the feed from hosted infrastructure, so your home computer and connection are not in the broadcast path after upload and setup. Compare supported file formats, playlist controls, monitoring, broadcast rotation, data retention, price, and service availability before choosing one. These details vary by provider.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to enable. See Get started with live streaming.
- Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio. Choose its title, description, privacy, and other stream settings. Make clear that it is a replay playlist.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream setup, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Load and start the playlist. Confirm that the encoder is playing the intended VODs in order, then start its feed. Check the Live Control Room for incoming video and audio and for warnings before relying on unattended playback.
- Monitor the broadcast. Check stream status and content warnings in the Live Control Room. YouTube scans live streams for third-party material; a broadcast can be interrupted, and rights holders may need to allowlist a channel even when you have a licence. An archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim after it ends. See Copyright issues with live streams.
Design archive rotation around YouTube’s 12-hour limit
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours, but says a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a VOD of each broadcast matters, plan to end or rotate the viewer-facing broadcast before that boundary, then start a new one. Save local copies of the source VODs or recordings as backup; YouTube recommends a local archive backup. Details are in Archive live streams.

A persistent 24/7 feed and separately completed broadcast archives are possible with API-aware broadcast management. Google’s documentation describes a pattern in which a live stream continues while a distinct broadcast resource is completed, but it does not describe automatic archive rotation as a built-in one-click Studio workflow. See YouTube Live Streaming API – Understanding Broadcasts and Streams. For a basic Studio setup, do not assume that one never-ending broadcast will produce a separate VOD for every session.
Decide whether viewers can pause or rewind
Enable DVR in the stream settings if you want viewers to pause or rewind while watching. YouTube notes that DVR can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the current broadcast began. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

Protect channel eligibility and monetization
YouTube scans live feeds for third-party content and applies its monetization policies to livestreams. Repetitive or mass-produced formats may be ineligible for monetization, and having permission to use a recording does not by itself establish that it meets reused-content requirements. Make the channel’s role and the replay format clear, and ensure the material offers original value rather than relying on permission alone. Check YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel around repeated VOD playback.
Local or cloud: what to compare
| Choice | Where the feed runs | What must stay available | Points to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | Your computer or hardware encoder | The encoder, playback, power, and internet connection for the duration of the feed | Playback and looping behavior, monitoring, local recording, and power and network continuity |
| Cloud encoder | A provider’s hosted infrastructure | Provider service and the configured playlist; the provider’s exact requirements vary | File formats, playlist controls, rotation, monitoring, retention, pricing, availability, and how broadcast and archive management work |
Troubleshooting common problems
- YouTube does not accept a live feed: verify live-streaming eligibility, allow time for first-time activation, and check that the encoder has the correct server URL and stream key.
- The feed stops when you leave: with a local encoder, check whether the computer slept, playback ended, power failed, or the internet connection dropped. A cloud encoder can remove your home computer and connection from the feed path, but provider behavior and recovery depend on the service.
- A long broadcast has no usable archive: if it exceeded 12 hours, YouTube may not have captured it. Keep local source files and use planned broadcast rotation if separate session VODs are important.
- Viewers cannot rewind as expected: check whether DVR is enabled and remember that DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours; it never reaches earlier than the start of the current broadcast.
- YouTube interrupts the stream or shows a rights warning: review the flagged material and the relevant rights. If the material is licensed, the rights holder may need to allowlist the channel; a later archive may still receive a Content ID claim.
- Replays do not qualify for monetization: rights clearance alone is not enough to establish reused-content eligibility. Review the channel’s originality and repetition against YouTube’s current monetization policy.
