Short answer: only partly. Xbox Series S and Series X can run Microsoft Edge and accept a keyboard and mouse for browsing. PS5 supports USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice for text entry and selecting items. - Web access and typing: opening websites, entering text, and moving a pointer with a mouse.

- General desktop computing: installing or running Windows applications, managing files, using browser extensions, and completing work or school tasks in a familiar desktop environment.
Xbox and PlayStation documentation supports the first category in different ways and supports the second only when the game or service is designed for those inputs. The official material cited here does not establish the third category. A console remains a console operating environment, even when it has a browser and accepts computer peripherals.

Microsoft’s Edge guidance for Xbox specifically covers Xbox Series S and Series X. The consoles include Edge, so you can open websites from the console environment rather than connecting a separate computer.
Microsoft also describes using a connected keyboard and mouse while browsing. That is useful for entering long searches, filling text fields, and moving a pointer without relying entirely on a controller. The experience is best understood as console access to a browser, not as a hidden Windows desktop.
Use keyboard shortcuts and keep game access nearby
Microsoft’s product guidance says: “With the keyboard, you can use shortcuts on your console, like any computer, and still have quick access to your favorite games.” This describes keyboard shortcuts and convenient access to console games; it does not say that Xbox runs Windows or accepts all desktop applications.

A wired USB keyboard and mouse are the simplest starting point because they avoid battery and wireless-pairing variables. Microsoft documents mouse-and-keyboard browsing, but the exact behavior of a device can still depend on the hardware and the console context. Check the compatibility information for the specific keyboard and mouse before buying them.

What a PS5 can do
Use USB or Bluetooth input devices
Sony’s PS5 keyboard and mouse support page documents connecting keyboards and mice over USB or Bluetooth. Sony says these devices can be used for entering text and selecting items on screen.
For USB equipment, connect the keyboard or mouse to the PS5 and follow the console’s prompts. For Bluetooth equipment, use the PS5’s device-connection procedure and put the accessory into pairing mode when prompted. Sony explicitly cautions that not all devices work with the console, so a keyboard or mouse working on a Windows computer is not proof that it will work on PS5.
Do not infer a Windows desktop from peripheral support
The PS5 documentation establishes input-device support, not a Windows-style desktop. It does not promise Windows installers, general-purpose desktop applications, unrestricted file handling, or browser extensions. If your requirement is simply faster text entry or selecting on-screen options, the documented support may be enough; if you need a conventional office computer, it is not equivalent evidence.
Does every game support a keyboard and mouse?
No. Connecting the devices at the system level does not force a game to accept them. Input support is a decision made by the game and, in some cases, by the service delivering it. A title may continue to require a controller even while the console recognizes your keyboard and mouse.

Local console games
Check the input information for the exact game and platform edition before assuming mouse-and-keyboard play. A game can support these controls on one platform or mode and omit them on another. The sources do not provide a universal list of supported titles, so no reliable percentage or device count should be assumed.
Xbox Cloud Gaming is a separate case
In its May 15, 2024 announcement, Xbox Wire described mouse-and-keyboard support for Xbox Cloud Gaming in browsers and in the Xbox app on PC. The announcement directs players to games designated as supporting those inputs. This is a cloud-gaming context, not proof that every locally installed Xbox game accepts a mouse and keyboard. Keep the service, device, and game designation aligned when checking compatibility.
How to decide whether a console is enough
- Name the task. Decide whether you need browsing and typing, keyboard-and-mouse game control, or Windows software. The first two may be feasible; the third is not established by the cited console documentation.
- Identify the exact console. Microsoft’s Edge instructions apply to Xbox Series S and Series X. Do not automatically extend that browser description to every Xbox generation or another console brand.
- Check the exact game or service. Look for explicit keyboard-and-mouse support for the platform, mode, and edition you will use. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, use the title designation described by Xbox.
- Verify the peripheral. For PS5 in particular, Sony warns that compatibility varies. Confirm that the exact USB or Bluetooth model is supported before relying on it.
- Connect and test before committing. Test typing in the intended browser or interface, pointer selection, and the controls in the specific game. A device being visible to the console does not guarantee in-game support.
- Keep a controller available. Because game support is not universal, a controller remains necessary for titles or menus that do not accept the keyboard and mouse.
What a console is unlikely to replace
A console browser can be useful for reading pages, searching, and entering text, but browser availability alone does not prove that a productivity site or office web app will behave like it does on Windows. The cited official sources do not settle support for specific work sites, school portals, downloads, file transfers, cloud-storage workflows, or extensions.

Similarly, a console’s ability to recognize a keyboard does not establish that you can install Windows programs, run desktop development tools, use unrestricted multitasking, or manage files with the same controls available on a Windows PC. If those are requirements, treat the console as a companion device rather than a replacement.

Keyboard-and-mouse buying guidance

Cloud Gaming behaves differently from local play
Verify that you are using the browser or Xbox app context covered by the May 2024 Xbox announcement and that the game is marked for keyboard-and-mouse support. Do not use cloud-game support as evidence for a locally installed title.
Typing is possible but the workflow still feels limited
That is the expected boundary between console input support and a Windows desktop. Browsing and text entry can work while file handling, extensions, or a required work application remains unavailable or unverified. Use a Windows PC for tasks that depend on those capabilities.
Bottom line for Xbox and PS5 owners
An Xbox Series S or X can provide a PC-like browsing experience through Edge with a connected keyboard and mouse. A PS5 can accept USB or Bluetooth keyboards and mice for text entry and on-screen selection. Both can support mouse-and-keyboard gaming only in titles that explicitly implement those controls. Neither set of facts demonstrates a full Windows PC replacement, so choose the console when your needs are browsing, typing, or supported gaming—not unrestricted desktop software and file work.
