The physical DayZ PS4 disc is playable on a disc-equipped PS5 through backward compatibility. Insert the disc, install any update the console requests, and leave the disc inserted whenever you play. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read the disc at all.
Which PS5 consoles can run the DayZ PS4 disc?
The deciding factor is the PS5 hardware, not a special DayZ edition. A PS5 with a built-in disc drive can read a compatible PS4 game disc. The PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot install or authenticate a physical DayZ disc.

| PS5 model | DayZ PS4 disc | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with a disc drive | Yes | Insert the disc, allow any required update, and keep the disc inserted for every play session. See PlayStation’s backward-compatibility instructions. |
| PS5 Digital Edition | No | There is no optical drive to read the physical disc. You would need a separately purchased digital license instead; the disc itself cannot be converted into access on this console. See PlayStation’s explanation of PS4 discs and PS5 Digital Edition limitations. |
If you are unsure which console you own, check whether the front of the system has a slot for game and Blu-ray discs. A Digital Edition has no slot. An external USB disc drive is not established by the cited compatibility guidance as a way to add PS4-disc support, so do not assume one will make the physical game usable.
What the official DayZ listing confirms
The US PlayStation Store lists DayZ as a PS4 game published by Bohemia Interactive, with a release date of May 30, 2019. Its product page explicitly marks the game as playable on PS5. The listing also carries an important qualification: “Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent.” That is an official compatibility notice, not a promise that every PS4 behavior will be identical on the newer console.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The same listing says current PS5 system software may be required. Keeping the console updated is therefore part of the normal setup, especially if the game does not start immediately after installation. You can verify the product information at the official DayZ PlayStation Store page.
“Playable on PS5” means backward-compatible PS4 software. It does not, by itself, establish that the disc includes a separate PS5-native build, a new graphics mode, or guaranteed feature parity. The store listing reviewed does not identify a PS5 version granted by owning the PS4 disc.
How to play the disc on a disc-drive PS5
- Start with the correct hardware. Confirm that your PS5 has a working disc drive. The Digital Edition cannot use this procedure.
- Turn on the console and sign in. A network connection is useful because the system may need to download a compatibility or game update.
- Insert the DayZ PS4 disc. Put the printed side in the orientation indicated by the drive. The PS5 should recognize the disc and display DayZ on the Games home.
- Install the game. Select the DayZ tile and follow the on-screen installation prompts. If an update is offered, let it finish before troubleshooting launch problems.
- Launch from the Games home. Start DayZ after installation. The console uses the inserted disc to verify that you own the physical copy.
- Leave the disc inserted. PlayStation’s support instructions state that you must keep the disc inserted each time you play the game. Removing it after installation does not turn the physical copy into a permanent digital license.
The disc is an ownership check as well as an installation source. If you eject it, another disc is inserted, or the console cannot read it, DayZ may show a lock or ask for the game media again. Reinsert the same disc before trying to launch.

Backward compatibility versus a PS5 upgrade
There are two different concepts that are easy to confuse:
- Backward-compatible PS4 play: the PS5 runs the PS4 release. This is what the DayZ listing confirms for the disc.
- A PS5 upgrade: an eligible game may offer a separate digital PS5 version, sometimes free and sometimes paid, depending on the publisher’s policy.
PlayStation’s general upgrade guide says upgrade availability and cost are game-dependent. For a qualifying disc-based upgrade, a PS5 with a disc drive is still required, and the original disc must remain inserted to play the resulting digital PS5 game. The guide is available at PlayStation’s PS4-to-PS5 upgrade support page.
The evidence available for this title does not establish that a DayZ PS4 disc grants an upgrade to a PS5-native edition. Therefore, you should buy or use the disc expecting backward-compatible PS4 software, not an automatically included PS5 version. If the console shows an upgrade option, read its price and eligibility text before accepting it; those terms can vary by game and region.

Online play and PlayStation Plus
DayZ is an online-focused survival game, and the PlayStation Store listing says online play is required. It also states that a PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online play. That requirement is separate from disc compatibility: a disc-drive PS5 can install and launch the game, but you still need the service and an internet connection for the online portion.
Recommended Free Tools
In practical terms, distinguish three stages:
- Disc recognition: the PS5 reads the physical media.
- Installation and updates: the console copies the game and obtains any required software update.
- Online access: DayZ connects to its online services and checks the PlayStation Plus requirement.
A failure at the third stage does not mean the disc is incompatible. Conversely, a disc-read error occurs before subscription status matters.
What to expect from features and performance
Because the official listing warns that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5, avoid assuming that every menu, peripheral behavior, or platform-specific function will match the PS4 experience. The notice does not identify which individual features are affected, so it is more accurate to treat it as a general caveat than to promise a complete feature list.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The compatibility information also does not establish a particular frame rate, resolution, load-time improvement, save-transfer behavior, or PS5-specific graphics mode. Those details should not be inferred simply from running the PS4 release on newer hardware. The confirmed outcome is that the PS4 title is playable on PS5, subject to the stated software and feature caveats.

The PS5 does not react when you insert the disc
- Check that the console is a disc-drive model rather than the Digital Edition.
- Eject the disc, inspect it for dirt or visible damage, and reinsert it in the drive’s indicated orientation.
- Try another known-working game disc. If no disc is recognized, the problem may involve the drive or console rather than DayZ.
DayZ appears but will not install
- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet so it can obtain required software updates.
- Allow the installation to complete before launching. Interrupting the copy process can leave an incomplete game tile.
- Install the latest available PS5 system software, since the DayZ listing says current system software may be needed.
The game installed but asks for the disc
This is expected behavior for a physical copy. Reinsert the DayZ disc and keep it in the drive whenever you play. Installation does not remove the disc-authentication requirement.

- Check the console’s internet connection.
- Verify that your account has the PlayStation Plus access required by the DayZ listing.
- Separate an online-service outage or account issue from backward-compatibility issues: the disc can be valid even when online access is temporarily unavailable.
You own the Digital Edition
There is no setting that makes a physical disc readable without a drive. The practical options are to use DayZ through a digital license on that console or play the disc on a PS5 model that includes a drive. The physical disc itself cannot supply the Digital Edition with a license.

Do you need anything besides the disc?
If you already own the DayZ PS4 disc and a disc-drive PS5, no special adapter or accessory is identified as necessary. You need the console, the disc, enough storage for installation and updates, and (for the game’s online play) an internet connection and PlayStation Plus as specified on the store listing.
A replacement disc or used copy may be relevant if your original is damaged, but compatibility does not depend on a particular marketplace listing. The available product information does not establish differences among regional physical editions, so check the packaging and account region when buying a copy rather than assuming every regional release has identical terms.
Quick decision checklist
- Have a PS5 with a disc drive? The DayZ PS4 disc is playable through backward compatibility.
- Have a PS5 Digital Edition? The physical disc cannot be used.
- Ready to install? Insert the disc, apply requested updates, and keep the disc inserted for each session.
- Expecting a PS5-native edition? Do not assume one is included; the confirmed support is for the PS4 release.
- Want to play online? DayZ requires online play and the listing says PlayStation Plus is required.
- Seeing missing features? The official listing warns that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5.
For the exact question—whether a DayZ PS4 disc works on PS5—the answer is yes on a model with a disc drive, with the normal disc-insertion, update, and compatibility limitations described above.
