A DIY Pip-Boy can display custom interfaces, maps, audio, and other features—but it is not automatically a phone or a GPS navigator. Those capabilities depend on the hardware and software in a particular build. And while you can wear one, whether it works for everyday use depends on its size, weight, power, comfort, and durability.
What a DIY Pip-Boy can do
“Functional” describes what a maker built into a specific project, not a standard set of features. Documented projects range from cosplay interfaces to devices with clocks, environmental readings, and audio.
Raspberry Pi builds
Adafruit’s Raspberry Pi Pip-Boy guide, originally published in 2016 and last edited in 2024, documents a Raspberry Pi Model B+ with a 3.5-inch PiTFT display. Its custom Python program displays OpenStreetMap (OSM) map data, and the build also includes a speaker and amplifier, rotary controls, Wi-Fi peripheral support, and a rechargeable 2200mAh battery. Adafruit describes it as a functional cosplay prop; the listed features do not establish that it can make calls or track the wearer’s live location.
A different, more ambitious Raspberry Pi Zero W project covered by Raspberry Pi in 2020 uses a display connected through GPIO and a Python interface with demonstration screens. Raspberry Pi characterizes that build as not beginner-level.

Other maker projects
Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s scrap-built example lists a 3.5-inch display, KY040 rotary encoder, three LEDs, two push-buttons, a power bank, and wiring. A separate ESP32 project documented by robegamesios reports a digital clock, temperature and humidity readings, internet radio presets, and MP3 support. Its animated radiation meter is an animation, not evidence that it measures radiation.
Can a DIY Pip-Boy work as a phone?
There are two different ideas here: running a Pip-Boy interface on a phone, and making the wearable itself a cellular phone. Pip-Boy.com’s FAQ says its unofficial fan-made simulators run in a phone browser. It also says the progressive web app’s core pages and simulators work offline after installation. That turns the phone into a screen for a Pip-Boy-style experience; it does not make a separate DIY prop call-capable.

- Hands-Free Convenience: When you are shopping, walking your dog, attending the fair, walking or hiking, the CACOE mobile phone chain can free your hand to do other things
- Adjustable Wearing Options: The necklace is adjustable in length, so it offers various wearing options, like a bag over your shoulder or just let it hang like a chest bag
- Simple Installation Process: No tools are required. You just need to insert the pad through the charging hole of the fully covered phone case, then plug in your phone and connect to the lanyard. Please note that the half cover phone case is not supported
- Durable Construction: The cell phone lanyard is made of sturdy polyester. After several product tests, the sustainable fabric will not break even if you tear it strongly, ensuring your phone stays secure
- Unobstructed Charging Access: The universal cell phone chain does not block your charging hole, so you can easily charge your phone while using the product
The documented builds above do not verify cellular calling or texting from a Pip-Boy enclosure. A display, Wi-Fi support, or a phone simulator alone is not evidence of phone service.
Can it use GPS or display maps?
Maps and GPS are separate capabilities. The Adafruit build documents displaying OSM map data, so a DIY Pip-Boy can show maps. The guide does not establish an onboard GPS receiver, live location tracking, or turn-by-turn navigation.

- Original design launched in 2022, setting the trend that inspired many others. A perfect gift for birthdays, Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day, graduations, anniversaries, or any special occasion. Note: Only ONE piece of the pouch included in the package. The main image simply shows both sides of the pouch with detachable lanyard. Due to monitor differences, actual colors may vary slightly from what appears online.
To add live positioning, a builder would need a compatible location source, such as a GPS receiver, plus software integration and testing. Navigation would require further software and suitable map or routing data. These are additional project goals, not features demonstrated by the cited Adafruit build.
Can you wear one every day?
You can wear a DIY Pip-Boy, but a successful costume prop is not automatically practical for daily use. Assess the finished device rather than assuming every build has the same limitations.

- Fit and movement: Check its size, weight, attachment security, and whether it restricts your arm or hand.
- Controls and visibility: See whether you can operate the controls and view the display while moving normally.
- Heat and power: Check heat during use, battery runtime, and how charging fits into your routine.
- Durability: Consider weather exposure, exposed components, and the risk of damaging the device or nearby objects.
Raspberry Pi Official Magazine recommends trying the finished item during an ordinary day before wearing it to an event. That gives you a chance to discover how it affects movement and whether it gets damaged or knocks into things.

Choose the features first, then select the board and peripherals that can support them. A Raspberry Pi single-board computer is one starting point for a build in the style of Adafruit’s project, but the board alone does not provide a finished wearable, phone service, or GPS.

Depending on the design, a complete project may need a compatible small display, battery and charging or power circuitry, controls, wiring, and an enclosure. Audio parts are needed if sound is a goal. For fabrication, Raspberry Pi Official Magazine describes an alternate scrap-built approach using materials including pipe, scrap plastic, and foam, alongside a display, buttons, LEDs, a power bank, and wiring.
Quick Recap
- Decide what “functional” means for your build. List whether you want a themed interface, maps, audio, sensors, calling, or live positioning.
- Match the electronics to those features. Check that the chosen board, display, controls, and power arrangement work with your intended software.
- Prototype the enclosure. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine advises trying parts in cardboard or paper before committing to the case.
- Get the computer and software running before installation. Test the interface and connected parts while assembling, rather than waiting until everything is sealed into the enclosure.
- Test the completed wearable. Try its controls and movement during normal activities before relying on it at an event or as a regular accessory.
