Yes—but only through Steam Families, and only for eligible games shared with members of your Steam Family. This is household account sharing, not a way to lend a game to any Steam user or transfer ownership. The person who bought the game still owns it.
What “borrowing” means on Steam
Steam Families gives members access to eligible games owned by other members. Valve introduced it as a single place to manage family access and play, replacing the earlier Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View features in its September 11, 2024 announcement.
Access is tied to membership in a Steam Family; it is not an unrestricted loan between friends. A Steam Family can have up to six members. Steam describes the feature as intended for a household of close family members, and its joining checks may reject accounts that do not appear to belong to the same household.
How to set up Steam Families
- Open Steam Account Details and select Family Management.
- Create a Steam Family.
- Invite the intended family members and have them accept the invitations.
- Open your Steam library and look in its family section for games shared by other members.

Which games can family members borrow?
Not every game in a member’s library is shareable. A title may be excluded if it requires a third-party product key, account, or subscription; is free-to-play (including its purchased DLC); is restricted by region or operating system; has been excluded by its publisher; or is marked private. Publishers can change a game’s eligibility, so check its current status in Steam rather than assuming it can be shared.
DLC access also depends on publisher settings. If family members own different DLC for a shared game, that difference may affect whether their saves are compatible.

Can two family members play the same game at once?
One copy of a game supports only one family member playing that title at a time. Members can play different games at the same time, but simultaneous play of the same title requires enough copies for the number of players. If the family owns multiple copies, Steam lets a player select which member’s copy to use.
What happens to saves and achievements?
Each player earns achievements on their own Steam account. Saved-game behavior depends on the game, so do not assume that progress will transfer between accounts or behave identically across every shared title.

Why is a shared game missing or locked?
If a title does not appear in the family library or is locked, check these likely causes:
- The publisher or Steam does not allow family sharing for that game.
- The game requires a third-party key, account, or subscription, or is restricted for the account’s region or operating system.
- The title is free-to-play, marked private, or otherwise excluded.
- Another family member is already using the only available copy.
Steam’s FAQ addresses the case “A game I want to play is locked in the Steam Family library.” If another member is playing the only copy, you will need to wait for it to become available or use another copy. If multiple copies are available, choose which member’s copy to play; different DLC may affect save compatibility.

Can you leave a Steam Family and join another?
Adults can leave, but Steam’s current FAQ says an adult who joined a previous family must wait one year after joining it before creating or joining another family. A vacated family slot also has a one-year cooldown before a new member can occupy it. Consider those limits before changing families.
