A Mastercard gift card is a payment card, not an Xbox code. To use it, try adding it through your Microsoft account’s payment options or enter it at checkout if that option is available. For a code you can redeem to your account, use an Xbox or Microsoft gift card instead.
Mastercard gift card vs. Xbox gift card
These are different products with different uses. Xbox Support separates managing payment options from redeeming prepaid codes: a Mastercard-branded gift card is a payment instrument, while an Xbox or Microsoft gift card provides a code for the account’s prepaid-code redemption flow. See Xbox payment options and redeeming prepaid codes.

You cannot enter the Mastercard card number as an Xbox gift-card code or transfer its balance into Microsoft account credit. Whether the card works as a payment method depends on the issuer’s rules and the payment methods available for your country and purchase.
How to try paying with a Mastercard gift card
- Check the card first. Confirm with the issuer that it is activated and allowed for online purchases. Check whether you need to register a billing address or ZIP code, and make sure the available balance covers the full charge, including any applicable taxes.
- Open Microsoft/Xbox payment settings or proceed to checkout. Xbox Support provides a payment-options and billing-details resource at Add a payment option. The exact labels and available choices can vary by country, so follow the options shown in your local account or checkout rather than relying on a universal menu path.
- Enter the card details only if the flow accepts them. Use the card number, expiry date, security code, and billing information requested. If Mastercard or the relevant card type is not offered, do not treat the card as a redeemable Xbox code; it may not be usable for that transaction through Xbox.
- Review the result before retrying. If the payment is declined, consult the issuer about restrictions or authorization issues. For subscription-payment problems, Xbox also has a subscription billing troubleshooting resource.
If Xbox declines the card
Repeated attempts are unlikely to help if the card is not activated, online purchases are blocked, the billing details do not match the issuer’s requirements, or the available balance is below the full transaction amount. Contact the issuer to confirm those details and ask whether it blocks this type of purchase. Xbox’s support resources do not establish that every Mastercard-branded prepaid card is accepted.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use an Xbox or Microsoft gift card as a separate alternative
If your goal is to add redeemable account credit, an Xbox or Microsoft gift card is the relevant product: redeem its code through the prepaid-code flow. Availability, currency, redemption rules, and eligible purchases vary by region. Buying this type of gift card does not convert or move the balance from your Mastercard gift card; it is a separate purchase.
