If you mean using one physical game disc on different consoles at different times, put the disc in the console you want to play on. Digital purchases are handled separately through PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play, which can be enabled on one PS5 at a time.
What “using one disc drive on multiple consoles” can mean
This answer concerns Sony’s detachable PS5 disc drive, model CFI-ZDD1. It does not cover older PlayStation consoles with built-in drives, or every PS5 model.

- Using one drive on two consoles at once: Sony describes attaching and pairing the drive with a PS5 during setup, but does not document simultaneous use on two consoles.
- Moving the drive between consoles over time: Sony’s public setup information requires pairing, but does not say whether repeated transfers are supported, whether each move requires pairing, or whether a transfer limit applies. If your plan depends on moving the drive between particular consoles, ask PlayStation Support to confirm before relying on it.
- Playing one physical game on different consoles: Insert the game disc into the console you want to use. Sony’s transfer instructions say to insert the disc into the destination PS5 to install a disc-based game.
- Sharing digital purchases: Use Console Sharing and Offline Play. This account feature is distinct from the drive and physical discs.
Which PS5 consoles support the detachable drive?
Sony identifies the CFI-ZDD1 as an add-on for specific PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro model groups. Its US setup guide lists CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups; Sony’s UK product listing also names CFI-2100. Compatibility wording can vary by region and product listing, so check the exact model number on your console against Sony’s local listing before buying.
The PS5 Digital Edition CFI-1000 model group does not support disc-based games or media, according to Sony’s support guidance. Do not assume that a PS5 Digital Edition has an add-on drive option without checking its model group.

Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the detachable drive and console during setup. The setup process also involves turning off and unplugging the console, allowing it to cool, removing the appropriate cover and feet, attaching the drive, then fitting the supplied cover and feet and reconnecting power. Follow the instructions for your exact console model.
The drive supports PS5 games, supported PS4 titles, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs, according to Sony’s UK product listing. See Sony’s PS5 disc drive setup guide and the regional CFI-ZDD1 product listing for the applicable model details.
Playing a physical game on another PS5
A physical game disc is not the same thing as the detachable drive. To play a disc-based game on another PS5, that console needs a compatible disc drive, and you need the physical game disc with you. Sony’s PS5 game and saved-data transfer instructions direct users to insert the game disc into the destination console to install it. The disc remains necessary to play the disc-based copy.
This works as access to the game on the console where the disc is inserted; it does not establish that one detachable drive can be routinely transferred between consoles. Sony’s reviewed public setup pages do not explain that repeated-transfer workflow.

Sharing digital games is a separate setting
For purchased and downloaded digital games, the relevant feature is Console Sharing and Offline Play, not an optical drive. When enabled, other users on that PS5 can play the account owner’s purchased and downloaded games and media, including while the console is offline. Sony allows this setting on one PS5 at a time.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- To move sharing to another PS5, turn the setting off on the previous console, then enable it on the new one.
Sony says the feature is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in to PlayStation. Selected PlayStation Plus benefits can also be shared on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play activated and one PS4 activated as the primary PS4; the eligible benefits are subject to Sony’s limits. This does not share a physical disc or drive, or enable the setting on multiple PS5s at once. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus sharing guidance.

The practical distinction is whether your game is physical or digital, whether you need access at the same time or at different times, and whether the console model supports the hardware involved.
