PS4 controller and PS5 compatibility at a glance
The deciding factor is the game version, not simply the console on which you launch it. PS5 supports backward-compatible PS4 software, and that software accepts the DUALSHOCK 4. Software built specifically for PS5 uses the DualSense controller requirement.

Why some PS5 games reject a PS4 controller
Native PS5 releases
A game with a native PS5 version belongs to the PS5 software generation. For those games, the DUALSHOCK 4 is not an alternative input device. The console may recognize the controller for system navigation or other supported uses, but it cannot be used as the gameplay controller for a native PS5 title. The required controller is DualSense.

This rule explains the common situation in which a DUALSHOCK 4 appears connected yet stops working after a game starts. The controller is not necessarily defective; the game is enforcing its PS5 controller requirement.

PS4 games running through backward compatibility
When the PS5 runs the PS4 edition of a game, the DUALSHOCK 4 is supported. PlayStation’s official FAQ says players can use either a DUALSHOCK 4 or a DualSense with PS4 games played on PS5: PlayStation.Blog.
If a title offers both PS4 and PS5 editions, the edition that actually launches matters. Selecting the PS5 edition brings the DualSense requirement; launching the PS4 edition preserves DUALSHOCK 4 compatibility. The console model alone does not change that distinction.
PS VR and other peripheral-dependent games
Virtual-reality titles can have additional hardware rules. Some PS VR games require or recommend a particular controller or peripheral, even when the underlying game is a PS4 title. Read the individual game’s peripheral requirements rather than assuming that every PS VR experience accepts the same controller combination. PlayStation includes this title-specific qualification in its compatibility guidance.

How to connect a DUALSHOCK 4 to a PS5
Pairing is a short, wired-first process. You need the PS5, the DUALSHOCK 4, and a compatible USB cable.
- Turn on the PS5. Start the console before attempting the first pairing.
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4. Plug the controller into the PS5 with a compatible USB cable.
- Press the PS button. The console will begin the controller sign-in process.
- Choose a user. Select the user profile that should use the controller.
- Remove the cable if desired. Once pairing is complete, disconnect the cable for wireless play. Keep it connected if you prefer wired use or need to charge the controller.
These are the pairing steps documented by PlayStation in its DUALSHOCK 4 support article: DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller support. The cable is needed for the initial link; it does not have to remain attached for subsequent wireless play.
What “supported PS4 games” means in practice
Most PS4 games work, but compatibility is not absolute
PlayStation says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. That is a broad platform statement, not a guarantee that every title behaves identically. The official backward-compatibility page specifically warns that some PS4 games may lack functionality or display unexpected behavior on PS5: PS4 games playable on PS5 consoles.

Therefore, “the DUALSHOCK 4 works on PS5” should be read as a compatibility rule for supported PS4 software. It does not promise identical menus, features, accessories, or performance for every game in the PS4 library.
Functionality can differ even when the game starts
A PS4 game may launch successfully while a particular feature behaves differently or is unavailable on PS5. If an input, mode, or accessory does not respond, check the game’s own compatibility information and the title’s peripheral requirements. Do not treat a missing feature as proof that the controller is incompatible with all PS4 games.
Troubleshooting when the controller does not work
The game is a native PS5 version
First identify the edition shown on the PS5 home screen or in the game library. If the game is running as a native PS5 title, switching cables or repeating pairing will not make the DUALSHOCK 4 a supported gameplay controller. Use DualSense for that edition, or choose the PS4 edition when the publisher provides one and you specifically need DUALSHOCK 4 support.

The PS5 has not completed pairing
Reconnect the DUALSHOCK 4 with a compatible USB cable, press the PS button, and select a user again. The wireless connection becomes available after this wired pairing sequence. If the controller was previously used with another console, repeat the pairing process on the PS5 rather than assuming it is still linked to the console you are using.
The title has a game-specific limitation
For a PS4 game that starts but has missing controls or unusual behavior, consult the title’s compatibility and peripheral notes. PlayStation’s warning covers individual PS4 games that may lack functionality or show unexpected behavior on PS5, so a title-level limitation can exist even though the controller type is generally supported.
You are trying to connect several controllers
A DUALSHOCK 4 can be paired with only one console at a time. The PS5 can have up to four controllers connected simultaneously, so local multiplayer is possible within that limit, provided each game supports the required number of players and each controller is paired to the PS5.

DUALSHOCK 4 versus DualSense: which one should you use?

The practical choice follows the software generation. Keeping a DUALSHOCK 4 makes sense for a PS4 library on PS5, while a DualSense is necessary for native PS5 games. Owning both avoids changing controllers when moving between generations.
Questions to check before starting a game
- Is the game launching as a PS4 edition or a native PS5 edition?
- Has the DUALSHOCK 4 been paired to this PS5 with a USB cable and the PS button?
- Did you select the intended user after pressing PS?
- Does the title list special PS VR or other peripheral requirements?
- Is the behavior a known title-specific limitation rather than a console-wide controller problem?
Those checks separate the two most common causes of failure: using the wrong controller generation for a native PS5 game, or expecting every backward-compatible PS4 title to retain every function.
