Yes. A Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz wireless gamepad can control the desktop version of DeSmuME when Windows, macOS, or Linux recognizes it as a usable joystick or controller. Pairing happens through the operating system; DeSmuME then receives the connected device through its input configuration.
The main limitation is the Nintendo DS touchscreen. A normal gamepad handles buttons and directional movement well, but touchscreen actions usually still require a mouse, trackpad, touchscreen, or a separate analog-stick-to-mouse mapper.

What you need
- A desktop build of DeSmuME.
- A Bluetooth-enabled computer, or a controller with a 2.4 GHz USB receiver.
- A PC-compatible wireless controller.
- A mouse or trackpad for touchscreen-heavy games.
- A legally obtained Nintendo DS game file.
DeSmuME supports joystick and gamepad input, but compatibility depends on the emulator port, operating system, controller mode, and build. The exact menu names can therefore differ between Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Bluetooth versus 2.4 GHz wireless
Bluetooth is convenient on laptops and does not require a dedicated receiver. However, the controller may reconnect in an unexpected input mode, lose its pairing after sleep, or expose button labels differently from another application.

2.4 GHz controllers use a bundled USB receiver and often appear to the computer as a conventional USB gamepad. They can be straightforward on desktop PCs, but they require an available USB port, and receivers are generally not interchangeable between brands.
If wireless setup fails, connect the controller by USB if possible. If it works over USB but not wirelessly, the likely problem is pairing, the receiver, the controller’s mode switch, or the operating-system driver—not DeSmuME’s basic button mapping.
Connect the controller to your computer
Windows
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device, choose Bluetooth, and complete pairing. For a 2.4 GHz controller, plug in its wireless receiver instead.
- Confirm that Windows lists the device as a connected game controller.
- Test its buttons in Windows’ game-controller testing panel if needed.
- Connect or pair the controller before launching DeSmuME.
macOS
- Open System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Put the controller into pairing mode and connect it.
- Check that macOS identifies it as an input device, then start DeSmuME.
Linux
- Pair the controller through your desktop environment’s Bluetooth settings, or connect its wireless receiver.
- Verify that Linux detects button presses.
- Launch the graphical DeSmuME build and open its input or control configuration.
Linux has multiple frontends and distributions, so there is no single menu path that applies to every build. DeSmuME’s documentation separates the Windows, Linux GTK, Linux Glade, command-line, and Macintosh ports.

Configure a wireless controller in DeSmuME on Windows
In the documented Windows port, open Config > Control Config. The manual describes this screen as a way to configure keyboard keys or a joystick. Newer or differently packaged builds may use slightly different labels.

- Open Config > Control Config.
- Click the input field beside a Nintendo DS control.
- Press the physical controller button you want to assign.
- Repeat the process for the D-pad, face buttons, shoulders, Start, and Select.
- Confirm or save the configuration, then load a game and test it.
Map buttons by pressing the desired physical button rather than relying on its displayed number. The documented Windows implementation refers to a DirectInput joystick interface, while some modern controllers present themselves through XInput or another mode. That difference can determine whether the device appears correctly.
The manual’s default keyboard fallback includes the arrow keys for movement, X/Z/S/A for DS face buttons, Q/W for the shoulder buttons, Enter for Start, and Right Shift for Select. These are fallback keyboard mappings, not guaranteed current controller assignments.
Configure a wireless controller on macOS
For older Mac instructions, the documented route is:
- Open DeSmuME > Preferences.
- Select Input.
- Open the Controller tab.
- Click the control you want to change.
- Press the desired controller button.
- Repeat for the remaining controls and close Preferences.
This path is build-dependent. Current macOS packages may use different wording or expose input through a different frontend. If you cannot find these labels, look for an Input, Controls, or Configure Controller section in the application’s preferences.

Configure a wireless controller on Linux
After pairing the controller or connecting its receiver, open the graphical DeSmuME build’s control or input settings. Select each DS control and press the controller button you want to assign.
If Linux detects the gamepad but DeSmuME does not, try another controller mode, connect by USB, or use an input mapper. Desktop permissions, the selected frontend, and the build’s joystick backend can all affect detection.

Use the emulator’s displayed DS control names as your guide. Xbox and Nintendo-style controllers place their lettered buttons differently, while PlayStation controllers use symbols. A swapped A/B arrangement can be corrected in DeSmuME without changing the controller itself.

Can a controller operate the DeSmuME touchscreen?
Not automatically in the same way as ordinary buttons. The DS touchscreen is a positional pointer interface, so a standard gamepad cannot reproduce precise stylus movement with a single button assignment.

For most games, use the mouse or trackpad to move the stylus and click the touchscreen. A controller’s analog stick can be converted into mouse movement with separate software such as JoyToKey on Windows or AntiMicro on Linux, with another button assigned as the click. This is a workaround, not a universal built-in DeSmuME feature, and setup varies by operating system.
Keep pointer input available for games involving drawing, dragging, precise tapping, text entry, or frequent touchscreen navigation. A wireless controller is most convenient for games that primarily use the D-pad and buttons.

The controller is connected but DeSmuME does not respond
- Confirm it is paired as a game controller rather than only as an audio or generic Bluetooth device.
- Connect it before launching DeSmuME, then restart the emulator after changing modes.
- Try the controller’s alternate PC mode, such as XInput or DirectInput.
- Test it over USB.
- Temporarily close Steam Input, DS4Windows, vendor software, or other remappers.
- Click the DeSmuME assignment field before pressing the physical button.
- Check macOS or Linux input permissions.
- Move a 2.4 GHz receiver from a problematic USB hub to the computer itself.
The buttons are assigned incorrectly
Displayed button numbers do not always match the labels printed on a controller. Delete the incorrect assignment, select the DS control again, and press the physical button you want. For Xbox, Nintendo, and PlayStation layouts, map by position and function rather than by letter or symbol.

Some controllers expose the D-pad as a hat switch instead of individual buttons. Others expose only an analog stick in a particular mode. Try switching input modes, using USB, assigning the stick temporarily, or removing a Steam profile that converts the D-pad into keyboard input.

It works elsewhere but not in DeSmuME
This usually indicates a compatibility difference between the application and your DeSmuME port. Close other mapping layers, relaunch DeSmuME with the controller already connected, and test another controller mode. A controller that works in modern Windows games is not guaranteed to appear correctly in an older build that expects a different joystick interface.
Do you need a special DeSmuME controller?
No. Any standard PC-compatible wireless gamepad that DeSmuME detects should be sufficient. Prioritize a comfortable D-pad, a clear PC compatibility mode, reliable operating-system support, and a USB fallback.
Examples include Bluetooth Xbox-compatible controllers, PlayStation DualShock or DualSense controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro-style pads, 8BitDo controllers, and 2.4 GHz PC gamepads. These are practical options, not universally guaranteed choices; exact compatibility depends on the model, mode, operating system, and DeSmuME build.
The 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller is one budget-oriented PC option with 2.4 GHz and wired USB connectivity. Confirm the exact product variant because 8BitDo’s PC wireless and Bluetooth models target different platforms. An Xbox Wireless Controller is another general-purpose option, particularly if you already own one; PC wireless connectivity can depend on Bluetooth support or a compatible adapter, while its USB-C cable provides a wired fallback.
You do not need to buy hardware if you already have a controller that the operating system and DeSmuME recognize.
What about two controllers?
Connecting a second wireless controller does not automatically create two-player Nintendo DS input or enable local wireless emulation. Additional controllers, multiplayer features, and DeSmuME’s specific multiplayer capabilities are separate configuration questions.
