The Xbox edition of SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds is designed to deliver Xbox game audio and party or in-game voice chat through its included 2.4 GHz wireless dongle. Set the dongle to Xbox mode, connect it to the console, and use the earbuds’ built-in microphone for chat. Bluetooth 5.3 is a separate quick-switch connection for compatible mobile devices, not the normal wireless path to an Xbox console.
What you need for Xbox game audio and chat
The key requirement is choosing the correct product edition: Arctis GameBuds for Xbox. This version includes a dual-mode 2.4 GHz dongle with an Xbox mode and a PlayStation/PC mode. That Xbox mode is what makes the earbuds suitable for console game sound and voice communication.

SteelSeries describes the 2.4 GHz connection as the gaming connection and says the earbuds include built-in microphones for chatting in games. In practical terms, the dongle carries the Xbox audio connection while the microphones send your voice back through the console’s chat system.

Xbox edition versus PlayStation edition
| Model | Console compatibility described by SteelSeries | Dongle modes | Appropriate choice for Xbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arctis GameBuds for Xbox | Xbox, with additional PlayStation/PC support through the alternate dongle mode | Xbox and PlayStation/PC | Yes |
| Arctis GameBuds for PlayStation | PlayStation and PC | Single mode | No; it is not the Xbox edition |
The available compatibility information does not establish that either edition has better sound quality or microphone performance. The distinction relevant to this question is the console connection and dongle mode.
How the Xbox connection works
For Xbox play, the Arctis GameBuds use their 2.4 GHz wireless dongle rather than a direct Bluetooth pairing with the console. The dongle acts as the wireless gaming interface. Once it is connected and set to Xbox mode, the console can send game audio to the earbuds and receive microphone input for party or in-game chat.
Bluetooth 5.3 serves a different purpose. SteelSeries presents it as a quick-switch option for mobile devices, such as a phone. You can use that connection for calls or mobile audio when appropriate, but it should not be confused with the dongle connection used for Xbox gaming.

Can they handle game audio and party chat at the same time?
Yes. The product is intended for in-game chat as well as game listening, so the same Xbox wireless connection supports both functions. You do not need to choose between hearing the game and speaking in party chat. The console still controls chat mixing and related audio behavior, so the exact balance depends on your Xbox audio settings and the game’s own voice-chat options.
Step-by-step Xbox setup
The official material confirms the required connection path and dongle modes but does not publish a complete, button-by-button Xbox pairing procedure in the reviewed text. The following sequence follows those documented requirements; labels and prompts can vary with Xbox system software.
- Confirm the edition. Check the packaging or product name and make sure it says Arctis GameBuds for Xbox. Do not assume the PlayStation edition will gain Xbox support simply because it also uses a wireless dongle.
- Charge the earbuds. Put both earbuds in the charging case before starting if their charge is uncertain. Keep the case available in case you need to reseat or recharge them during setup.
- Connect the dongle. Plug the included 2.4 GHz dongle into the Xbox. If the console’s available port is USB-A and the dongle uses USB-C, use the included USB-C-to-USB-A converter.
- Select Xbox mode. Set the dongle’s mode switch to Xbox, not PlayStation/PC. The Xbox model’s dual-mode design is specifically intended to provide this choice.
- Power and pair the earbuds. Turn on or remove the earbuds according to the product’s pairing instructions and allow the dongle and earbuds to establish their wireless link. If they do not connect, consult the current SteelSeries manual for the pairing controls and indicator meanings; the abbreviated product information does not list those controls.
- Check Xbox audio output. Open the console’s audio settings and verify that the connected headset or USB audio device is selected for game output and chat. Xbox menu wording can change between system updates, so use the headset and chat output choices shown on your console.
- Check microphone permission and chat mode. Join an Xbox party or a game’s voice channel, confirm that the microphone is not muted, and speak while watching the chat indicator or asking another player whether they can hear you.
- Test both directions. Play a game or system sound to confirm listening, then make a short party-chat test to confirm microphone input. Adjust game/chat balance on the console or in the game if one is masking the other.
Using Bluetooth without breaking the Xbox setup
The earbuds can quick-switch to Bluetooth 5.3 for a compatible mobile device. This is useful if you want to answer a phone call or listen to mobile audio while the earbuds remain part of your gaming setup. The manufacturer’s product description specifically refers to answering a call with the built-in mobile microphones.

Keep the roles separate when troubleshooting: the 2.4 GHz dongle is the Xbox gaming path, while Bluetooth is the mobile-device path. Trying to pair the earbuds to Xbox as a standard Bluetooth headset is not the setup described for this product. If the console does not produce sound, return to the dongle connection and verify Xbox mode before changing phone Bluetooth settings.
Battery life and what the figures mean
SteelSeries lists 10 hours per charge for the earbuds and up to 40 hours total with the charging case. The total figure is explicitly conditioned on using 2.4 GHz with noise control turned off. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results, and actual runtime can vary with volume, wireless conditions, noise-control settings, microphone use and battery age.
| Specification | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Earbud runtime | 10 hours per charge | Manufacturer specification; real runtime can vary |
| Total runtime with case | Up to 40 hours | SteelSeries states this is based on 2.4 GHz with noise control off |
If you are planning a long session, charge the case as well as the earbuds. “Up to” describes a maximum under the stated condition, not a guaranteed runtime for every Xbox session.

Troubleshooting Xbox sound or party chat
No game audio
- Confirm that the earbuds are the Xbox edition and that the dongle is plugged into the console.
- Check the physical dongle switch. The Xbox model has Xbox and PlayStation/PC modes; the wrong position can prevent the intended console connection.
- Reseat the dongle and earbuds, then allow the wireless link to establish again.
- Open Xbox audio settings and reselect the connected headset or USB audio output if the console is still using another device.
- Check charge levels and reduce possible USB connection problems by trying another compatible console port or the supplied converter where appropriate.
You hear the game but cannot speak
- Make sure the earbuds’ built-in microphone is not muted through the earbuds’ controls or the console’s chat interface.
- Confirm that you joined the intended Xbox party or in-game voice channel and that the game has voice chat enabled.
- Review Xbox privacy, communication and microphone permissions if other players cannot hear you.
- Test in an Xbox party as well as inside the game. If party chat works but game chat does not, the game’s voice settings are the likely place to continue.
These checks are practical troubleshooting steps, not a verbatim manufacturer-prescribed sequence. The available product information confirms the built-in chat microphone and wireless modes but does not document every Xbox menu state or game-specific behavior.
You can speak but cannot hear party members
- Verify that chat output is routed to the headset rather than speakers or another connected device.
- Check the Xbox game/chat balance control and the game’s voice-volume setting.
- Ask a party member to confirm whether your microphone is working independently of the listening problem.
- Reconnect the dongle in Xbox mode and repeat a short party test.
Bluetooth works on a phone but Xbox does not
That result usually indicates that the earbuds are functioning over Bluetooth while the Xbox path still needs attention. Disconnecting or pausing mobile Bluetooth, checking the dongle’s Xbox mode, and verifying the console’s USB audio selection keeps the two connection types from being mixed up.
One earbud or the microphone behaves inconsistently
Place both earbuds in the case, confirm they are charging, and reconnect them to the dongle. If the behavior continues, consult the current SteelSeries manual for reset, firmware and re-pairing instructions. The product summary reviewed for this article does not specify a universal reset sequence, so do not apply a button combination from another SteelSeries model.

What the official information does—and does not—establish
The manufacturer’s product and compatibility descriptions establish that the Xbox edition is intended for Xbox use, that its dual-mode dongle includes an Xbox setting, and that the earbuds have built-in microphones for in-game chat. They also publish the battery figures and the Bluetooth 5.3 mobile-device option.
They do not establish that every game exposes identical chat controls, that every Xbox firmware version displays the same menu labels, or that every individual unit will behave identically. No independent testing was performed for this compatibility assessment. Treat the general answer as confirmed product intent, while allowing for normal differences caused by console settings, game implementation, firmware and hardware condition.
Should an Xbox player choose these earbuds?
They are a logical fit when you want true wireless earbuds with a dedicated Xbox connection and occasional mobile Bluetooth use. The deciding points are straightforward:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Choose the Xbox edition, not the PlayStation edition.
- Use the 2.4 GHz dongle in Xbox mode for console game audio and chat.
- Use Bluetooth for a compatible phone or other mobile device, not as the primary Xbox connection.
- Expect the published battery maximums to depend on the stated test conditions, especially noise control being off for the up-to-40-hour case total.
If your priority is Xbox party chat and game audio in one wireless setup, the documented connection design supports that use. If you need a setup that relies on direct Bluetooth pairing to the console, this is not the connection method SteelSeries describes.
