Can You Use Lighthouse Trackers with Steam Frame? What’s Confirmed

Steam Frame does not have documented native Lighthouse headset tracking. Whether separate Lighthouse body trackers work alongside it remains unconfirmed.

Steam Frame’s headset tracking is inside-out, not Lighthouse. Valve’s documentation does not describe native Lighthouse tracking for the headset, and PC Gamer reported that outside-in tracking is not supported. Whether Lighthouse body trackers can work alongside Steam Frame in a PC-driven SteamVR setup is a separate question: compatibility and setup have not been confirmed in the documentation reviewed.

What Lighthouse tracking would be used for

There are two different tracking questions here. The first is how the headset determines its own position and orientation. Valve describes Steam Frame as using inside-out tracking, with sensors on the headset tracking the environment; Valve also says the included controllers are tracked by the headset. The second question is whether separate trackers can follow body points or objects while Steam Frame runs a PC-driven SteamVR experience. One capability does not establish the other.

PC Gamer describes Lighthouse trackers as devices attached to people or objects so their movement can be represented in VR or on stream. That explains their general role, but does not confirm a Steam Frame workflow. A headset that runs SteamVR content is not automatically compatible with every SteamVR tracking accessory.

What is known about Steam Frame tracking

  • Headset pose: Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes inside-out tracking. It does not document native Lighthouse tracking for locating the headset.
  • Controllers: Valve’s Steam Frame product page says the included controllers are tracked by the headset.
  • Outside-in hardware: PC Gamer reported that Steam Frame uses four outward-facing cameras and does not support outside-in tracking. That reporting concerns headset tracking, not whether separate body trackers might work in the same PC setup.
  • Separate trackers: No device-specific pairing or calibration procedure for Lighthouse trackers with Steam Frame is established by the official documentation cited here.

What to check before buying Lighthouse gear

HTC Vive Tracker 3.0 is a relevant product to investigate if your goal is Lighthouse-based body tracking, but the available information does not establish that it works with Steam Frame. Buying trackers or base stations on the assumption that they will pair, calibrate, or coexist correctly with this headset risks leaving you with hardware that does not meet your intended setup.

  • Look for current, device-specific confirmation from Valve or a documented Steam Frame test before treating any Lighthouse tracker as compatible.
  • Require explicit information about tracker pairing, calibration, and any necessary PC, receiver, or base-station hardware. The sources cited here do not provide a verified recipe for those requirements.
  • Do not interpret a mention of SteamVR, an expansion port, or general tracker support as proof of Lighthouse compatibility. PC Gamer quoted Valve engineer Jeremy Selan discussing the port’s capacity for high-speed camera information and data, while reporting that Valve was not announcing accessories at that time.

Is a compatible alternative on the way?

PC Gamer reported in September 2026 that Soulart said it was working to support Steam Frame with an independent motion tracker. That is a reported development, not evidence that a compatible tracker is currently available or that it provides Lighthouse functionality. Treat it as a possible future option rather than a present buying recommendation.

Practical answer

If you mean using Lighthouse base stations to track Steam Frame itself, the documented answer is no: Valve describes inside-out tracking and does not document native Lighthouse support. If you mean adding Lighthouse body trackers alongside Steam Frame, compatibility remains unconfirmed. Wait for device-specific documentation or a well-documented test before buying a kit on that basis.
