Short answer: Valve documents Steam Frame as an inside-out-tracked headset, but does not document whether its current PC software supports separate lighthouse-tracked peripherals with or without Space Calibrator. SteamVR compatibility alone does not mean the Frame headset is tracked by base stations.
What “use lighthouse trackers” can mean
There are two different questions here: whether base stations track the Steam Frame headset itself, and whether separate lighthouse-tracked controllers or body trackers can be used alongside Frame tracking in a PC VR session.
Tracking the Steam Frame headset
Valve describes Steam Frame as a self-contained headset with inside-out tracking. Valve also says it is compatible with SteamVR and OpenXR, but that does not establish that the headset contains SteamVR Tracking sensors or can be tracked by lighthouse base stations.
Using separate trackers with Frame
Valve’s published Frame documentation does not explain whether separate SteamVR Tracking peripherals can be used simultaneously with Frame on PC, or whether Space Calibrator is required. The available evidence therefore does not support a definite yes or no for that mixed setup.

What Space Calibrator does
SteamVR Tracking—often informally called “Lighthouse”—uses base stations and sensors on tracked objects. Valve’s description of SteamVR Tracking treats it as a distinct system, rather than another name for the Frame’s inside-out tracking.
Space Calibrator is third-party software intended to align the coordinate spaces of a headset and external trackers. If the headset and trackers report positions in different coordinate systems, that is the kind of mismatch the tool is designed to address. Its stated purpose does not prove that a particular Steam Frame software version supports the combination.

The project documentation describes an initial calibration, recalibration after moving base stations or when significant drift occurs, and continuous calibration as a drift-management option. It also warns that extensive room-scale movement may call for continuous calibration in some wireless mixed setups. These are general descriptions of the utility, not a Steam Frame setup recipe.
What to check before building a separate tracker setup
- What needs tracking: distinguish headset tracking from separate controllers or body trackers. A base station does not, by itself, add lighthouse tracking to the Frame headset.
- How the session runs: standalone Frame use and a PC SteamVR session are different contexts. Confirm that the exact peripheral and runtime combination is supported before buying hardware.
- Whether spaces align: if the headset and external trackers use different tracking spaces, calibration may be needed; Frame-specific support remains undocumented in the cited Valve material.
- Base-station generation: Steam Support says 1.0 and 2.0 base stations cannot be mixed in one setup. Index works with either generation, but that is not a compatibility statement about Steam Frame.
General SteamVR base-station guidance
For supported SteamVR Tracking room-scale setups, Steam Support recommends two base stations for most room-scale play areas, positioned above head height and angled down 30–45 degrees, with no more than 5 metres (16 feet) between them. This is general guidance, not a confirmed Steam Frame requirement.

Valve’s SteamVR Tracking system description says base stations sweep an area with sync pulses and laser lines, reach about 5 metres, and describes tracking rates from 250 Hz to 1 kHz across its stated applications. Those are vendor-published system descriptions, not measurements of a Steam Frame mixed-tracking setup.

Do not buy base stations on the assumption that they will make the Steam Frame headset lighthouse-tracked. If your goal is to use separate SteamVR-compatible trackers with Frame on PC, the compatibility and Space Calibrator requirement are not established by Valve’s published Frame documentation. Confirm that exact workflow for the current software before investing in a separate tracking system.
